We have been sleeping on an air bed
The only con to our dual control air mattress was the foam pad between the two sides. I have trimmed it down pretty far and there is no longer a ridge between the two sides. You may also have different results, depending on the size of the people sleeping on the air mattress.
When we originally bought the air bed, we got one without the deeper pillow top. The one we had tried, while at the store, felt pretty comfortable. After using an air mattress without a pillow top, we decided to add one; we bought a separate memory foam pillow top and placed it under the fitted sheet, which was exactly what we needed for comfort.

We purchased a memory foam mattress pillow topper separately.
To me, this bed appears to be a single control.

Pillow Toppers on Amazon
Adding a pillow topper to an air mattress that doesn't have a pillow top, can increase the comfort.
The first mattress topper we purchased was filled with down feathers. Over time, the feathers in the topper kept shifting, making hills and valleys. So we recently purchased a memory foam mattress topper. We've had it several years now and so far it is very comfortable.
We purchased one with a zip off cover which can come off and be washed.

Portable air mattresses have mutliple uses.
Portable air mattresses are great for the sleepover, weekend guests, and can also be great for travel.
Our daughter prefers using one in lieu of the sofa bed when we travel. Once blown up, we just lean it against a wall during the day.
Being compact when deflated, they are easily stored in between uses.

Filling the Air Mattress
The air mattress that comes with an electric pump fills up pretty quickly.
Our portable one that we've used on trips has a hand pump, and it can be a fun way to get a work out. However, it's more fun to take turns with somebody.

Any air mattress that you purchase will probably come with it's own pump, do check. Our portable mattress came with a hand operated pump, and our air bed has a built in electric pump.
