We have been sleeping on an air mattress for over ten years now. By far, it is the best consistent mattress that we have slept on. We have one with dual controls, so each side is easily filled to individual choice. It offers consistent overall support and comfort.
The only con to our dual control air mattress was the foam pad between the two sides. I have trimmed it down pretty far and there is no longer a ridge between the two sides. You may also have different results, depending on the size of the people sleeping on the mattress.
When we originally bought the air bed, we got one without the deeper pillow top. The one we had tried at the store had felt pretty comfortable. After using an air mattress without a pillow top, we decided to add one; we bought a separate memory foam pillow top and placed it under the fitted sheet, which was a big plus for comfort.

We purchased a memory foam mattress pillow topper separately.
To me, this bed appears to be a single control.
Pillow Toppers on Amazon
Adding a pillow topper to an air mattress that doesn't have a pillow top, can increase the comfort.
The first mattress topper we purchased was filled with down feathers. Over time, the feathers in the topper kept shifting, making hills and valleys. So we recently purchased a memory foam mattress topper. We've had it several years now and so far it is very comfortable.
We purchased one with a zip off cover which can come off and be washed.

The portable air mattress can give an uncomfortable mattress new life. My daughter and I had stayed in college dorms during band camp and the mattresses there were exceptionally hard. The next time back, I placed an air mattress over the hard mattress, it was a life saver.

Any air mattress that you purchase will probably come with it's own pump, do check. Our portable mattress came with a hand operated pump, and our air bed has a built in electric pump.

Great soft blanket

I live in the mountains, about a hundred miles from any furniture store... so I've been using air mattresses for years now. Whenever one deflates it is easy to buy and transport another one home.
