What is Airsoft?

If you love paintball but can't quite deal with the discomfort associated with it, airsoft may be just the game for you. Much like paintball games, airsoft is a game of combat-much like a battle simulation game. Players play the game by aiming at each other with soft air guns. How to Play Airsoft

Types of Games Played With Airsoft Equipment

Sometimes, a player can only be hit once before being out of the game, and sometimes there are different hits that must be taken in order for a player to be out. The game either ends when a team member has taken the flag of the opponents team or the neutral flag, or when the team member has brought the right flag back to their own base.

MilSim

Another game played with Airsoft is Milsim. This is a game that is also known as Military Simulation. In this game, there are military live-action role playing elements that are combined with the Airsoft gun play. With these games, there are roles that are assigned to everyone, just like the real army, and there are missions that are undertaken by the people who are playing the various roles.

With the MilSim games, there is no limit to the types of games that can be played, and to what exactly is going on within the games. Sometimes, Milsim games are reenactments, where the Airsoft equipment is used to reenact specific wars or battles.

Othertimes, Airsoft MilSim games are not reenactments, but are games in which teams are chosen, and wars are waged between the teams.

Many times, MilSim games are considered to be more heavy duty and more involved than simple capture the flag games. For some of the MilSim games, battles and wars can wage on for many periods of play, and there can be many other elements, such as live action role playing elements that include speaking lines, trading sides, and working for the other team. The MilSim games can be planned out well in advance, such as in the case of reenactments, or they can be non scripted and can have any outcome. No matter what, MilSim games are the most involved type of Airsoft games.

Honor System

When playing any type of Airsoft game, it is important to rely on the honor system. This is because, unlike paintball, there is no way for anyone other than the person being hit to tell that they were actually hit. Therefore, players must be honest and must say if they have been hit by the pellets or BBs. Without an honor system, it can be difficult to make Airsoft games work, because if no one ever admits to being hit, the games cannot proceed as they should. Therefore, it is often necessary to lay down the rules before Airsoft games are played.

Depending on the size and scope of the various Airsoft games you are playing, you might have a judge who watches the action and can make judgments based on who was hit, who is out of the game, or even who has won the game. For many structured and indoor Airsoft games, a judge is often used, though for many outdoor, unstructured games, the honor system is used and no judge is required.

What Is Civil War Reenactment?

Civil War reenactors are generally out to recreate the appearance of specific events or battles in the American Civil War. They're most common in the US, but they can also be found in the UK, Germany and Canada. Reenactments have been around for a long time, with veterans of the war recreating battles to commemorate their comrades and ensure that the war would not be forgotten. One celebration, the Grand Reunion of 1913, fifty years after the Battle of Gettysburg, was attended by more than fifty thousand vetarans.

Reenacting in modern times, however, probably started in the mid-1960s, for the centennial commemorations of the war. Reenacting of all kinds became a lot more popular in the 1980s and 1990s. The one hundred and twenty-fifth anniversary of the battle at Manassas was attended by more than six thousand, and at that time, there were probably fifty thousand reenactors in the country.

Extensive amounts of time and money are spent by many hobbyists, both young and old, who go to a great deal of effort to learn what happened and how soldiers and noncombantants in the Civil War spend their lives. Classes are put on, teaching people in the hobby how to wear clothing of the period, prepare and eat food, and even fight and pretend to die in authentic looking ways. More men than women generally participate in this kind of event, but many women are present as noncombatants. Some also dress as men and participate this way.

Reenactment events can have anywhere from a hundred to a thousand participants, who portray cavalry, infantry and artillery from both sides of the war. There are more events of this kind in the eastern half of the US, near actual battle sites, than anywhere else, but Civil War reenactors are found elsewhere, too. Many people do travel some distance to events, however.

If you're interested in being involved in an event of this type, you should expect a base level of authenticity to be required. This is usually fairly attainable, even by people who aren't familiar with the hobby. Most groups have a list of requirements and will help new members get together a costume and other items (often called kit) for their first event. This can be costly, though making some of one's kit can reduce the price of getting started significantly. Events that include an encampment will also require authentic looking camping supplies, as well as personal kit.
