Black People. Cool T-shirts.

This lens is about AjamuDesigns.com, my CafePress site. Ajamu Designs features designs about Black people, for Black people, by a Black person!

AjamuDesigns.com began as a single Kwanzaa design way back when I first started with CafePress in 2005. In fact it was the first design I ever did. Since then my shop for and about Black people has grown and evolved quite a bit. What started out as a single design has grown into its own website.

African-American Experience

or... my skewed view.

Basically Ajamu Designs is about the Black Experience... well, at least my slightly slanted view of the Black Experience. There's a lot out there made by, or marketed to, Black people, and some of it's good stuff. But I've found it doesn't always reflect how I see the world or what I feel about it. Ajamu Designs is just that-- my thoughtful, quirky, sometimes funny view of my own Black world and how I feel about it.

Confession.

on the real though...

OK, I'll level with you. Of course I'm going to try and sell you my stuff. You know that. But I figure if that's all I do, it will get real boring real quick (unless you really, really like my stuff, and how likely is that?) Boring for you and me. Who wants that?
So I've developed the clever plan of including stuff that's not just a thinly veiled sales pitch*...

I hope by including interesting, funny, thought-provoking, enjoyable stuff, you may be entertained. You might begin to develop positive feelings toward this lens, and maybe, just maybe, toward AjamuDesigns.com. Soon you'll be thinking, "I absolutely must have something from Ajamu Designs!"

Devious? I know... fair warning.

*OK, I'll be honest... It is a thinly veiled sales pitch. However, this sales pitch also belly dances in silk pantaloons and geenie booties while playing finger-cymbals! This sales pitch is tantalizing!

IAQ- Imaginarily Asked Questions

Some questions I made up I imagined you might ask... and my answers.

Q: Uhh... I mean it's cool that you're like, pro-Black people, but do you not... um... I mean, how do you feel about... you know... white people?
A: Some of my best friends are white. Really, I swear. Scout's honor.

Q: Oh, that's cool then. But, I mean... do you still think we need a site like this now that Obama is president?
A: Of course not! ...thank God all that race stuff is done with and over and we live in a truly color-blind society. About time. Besides, who really needs cool t-shirts designed for them especially?

Q: Wait... was that sarcasm, that was sarcasm right?
A: Sigh. Unfortunately, yes it was. No doubt, America has made undeniable progress. But we're not done yet. Besides even if everything was all hunky-dory, Black culture has so much more to offer than I commonly see. There's more than just Barack and Hip-hop (both of which are good things, just not everything.)
...There's also basketball.

A: Ha, ha, very funny. But seriously, here's a real question. What's with the name? I mean 'Ajamu', is that... African?
A: It is indeed African. Actually it means, "He fights for what he wants." Also, it happens to be my name, which is convenient since I named my website after it.

Late to the Party

or... Didn't the election already happen?

The election is over. The people have spoken. Yard signs have come down. Dissappointed campaigners contemplate scraping their bumper stickers. Elected officials are settling into their respective seats (unless their Minnesotan senators.)
The politically fatigued nation heaves a collective sigh of relief. Laying down the heavy burden of responsible citizenship we gladly cede the decision-making to those we've judged as qualified and hope they don't screw it up too badly...

Sounds like now is the perfect time for new political t-shirts from AjamuDesigns.com!

Really! Now is the time to declare your allegience! Now is the time to accost your friends and loved ones and random people on the street and convice them that they're so so wrong. And what better way to start than with a new t-shirt!

OK, so it might not be the ideal time for these but I can't really help when inspiration strikes. Hope you enjoy!
