Travelling to the Hall of Records

My first introduction to the Akashic Records was through a book I read many years ago. It was a work of science fiction. The book was called the 'Eternity Stone' by Aden & Mary Romine (featured in the eBay section). I followed this up a few years later by reading 'The Lodestone' by W.A. Harbinson (again featured in the eBay section).

Believe it or not (as Mr Ripley would say), these books are very difficult to source. I still have my copies and for whatever reason, have never felt the urge to surrender them to the book depot. Another book that touches on these records is a book, part three in a trilogy, by Australian author Traci Harding titled the 'Cosmic Logos' (see eBay).

So what are these records?

The Akashic Records are said to be the library of all possible combinations of events and responses to those events as they concern conscious beings in all realities. Every form of living entity contributes to and is able to access these records. It is thought that any sentient being can become the physical medium for accessing the Akashic Records.

This is accomplished via various methods and spiritual regimes. For example, you may attain access through yogia, meditation or visualization. These, among other techniques may be employed to reach the necessary state of focus to access the Records.

These are the books I was talking about.

Does the name 'Akashic' Records mean anything?

The name of Akashic records is derived from the Sanskrit word Akasha, meaning "sky", "space" or "aether". The term was used by Theosophists to denote a theory concerning a library of mystical knowledge encoded on a non-physical plane of existence. They are said to contain all knowledge and human experience in the Universe. The Akashic Records can be likened to a library, a universal type of super computer or the 'Mind of God'.

According to the information currently held on these records, it is said that they are constantly updated. This concept originated in the Theosophical movements that flourished during the 19th Century. Movements such as The Golden Dawn and H.P. Blavatsky's Theosophical Society. Many of these societies remain active in today's society delivering information on the New Age return to ancient beliefs.

Believers and Skeptics

Believers:

Belief in the existence of the Akashic Records is widespread throughout many ancient cultures although they may not have referred to them by the same name. However, no matter the label or description, it appears that ancient cultures knew of and consulted these records.

Believers have made many claims about the Akasha and how to use them or access them. These include:
- that the Hindu Veda and the Sanskrit language of itself were derived from the Akashic Records.
- in ancient Egypt, those who could access the Akashic Records were held in high standing and advised the Pharaohs.
- Druidic priests in Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England were said to demonstrate the ability to access the Akasha.
- the Akashic records appear in the Bible in various passages namely: Old Testament Psalm 69:28; the New Testament in Philippians 4:3 and various parts of Revelations (3:5, 13:8, 17:8, 20:12, 20:15 and 21:27. (refernce is "book of life.")

Among those individuals who claim to have consciously accessed the Akashic Records include: Charles Webster Leadbeater, Annie Besant, Alice Bailey, Samael Aun Weor, William Lilly, Manly P. Hall, Lilian Treemont, Dion Fortune, George Hunt Williamson, Rudolf Steiner, Max Heindel, and Edgar Cayce.

Skeptics:

Despite the claims made by those who believe in the Records, there are no direct references to the Akasha in any of the historical documentation of the groups mentioned above.

Historically, the scientific community, has rejected these theories due to a lack of any independently verifiable evidence. Generally the Records are not even recognized within the specified religious traditions concerned. It is acknowledged that spedific groups or individuals may hold such a belief. An example would be Ervin László, a philosopher who championed the theory of the Records. He felt that they were the key to resolving many anomalies in history and science.
