Daschunds

I was never really the biggest fan of Daschunds, although, I never really had much interaction with many, either. The only real thing I knew about the breed was that because of their long backs they shouldn't be allowed to jump on and off things, such as the couch or a bed.

But, after I met this extremely overweight, miniature daschund named Bo, my mind was changed. Well, as I never really had an opinion about the breed, we'll say my mind was made up. Although, I wouldn't call it one of my favorite breeds, as that has been predetermined for years, but the breed is up there. I hold it in high regard, as a breed may go.

History of the Daschund

Some people theorize that the beginning of the breed date back to Ancient Egypt because carvings of short-legged hunting dogs are found there. But, as for modern day, the Dachshund can be called a creation of European breeders by breeding various German, French, and English hounds and terriers.

Dachshunds have been kept by royal courts all over Europe, including that of Queen Victoria, who was particularly found of the breed.

The first verifiable references to the dachshund, originally named the "Tachs Kriecher" or "Tachs Krieger," came from books written in the early 1700s.

Prior to that, references that refer to a "badger dog" and "hole dog", could, also, refer to the Daschund, but it could also refer to purposes not breeds, as well.

The breed is famous for its use in exterminating badgers and badger-baiting, dachshunds were also commonly used for rabbit and fox hunting, too. Sometimes, they were used in packs in order to locate wounded deer when hunting.

Daschund Temperament

Daschunds are playful and fun dogs.

They are known to chase small animals, birds, lizards, and tennis balls, which can be attributed their badger and rodent hunting.

Daschunds are, also, known for their extensive digging problems, which can also be attributed to their roots.

Many dachshunds are strong-willed or stubborn, making them a challenge to train.

Dachshunds are known for their devotion and loyalty to their owners and families. And, becauase of their loud bark, they make great watchdogs.

Some dachshunds are prone to separation anxiety and may cause damage to within the house to relieve stress.

Daschunds can, also, be credited to being clever, lively, and courageous.

If raised improperly, withouth proper socialization and training, dachshunds can become aggressive or fearful. They require a caring owner that understands their need to have entertainment and exercise.

The dachshund's temperament may vary greatly from dog to dog. Where some individuals will not like new people, others will fall at their feet wanting to be pet. Some Daschunds will be the average energetic dog, but some are laid back. Some may not be good with children, and they may bite an unfamiliar child. Becuase of this varied temperament, it is not the dog for everyone.

Dachshunds come in three sizes. The standard dachshund averages 16 to 28 pounds, while the miniature daschund typically weighs less than 11 pounds. The third, less known daschund variety is the kaninchen, which weighs 7-9 pounds, on average.

Daschund Health Concerns

The Daschund is known to have spinal problems, especially intervertebral disk disease (IVDD), due in part to an extremely long spinal column and short rib cage.

The risk of injury can be worsened by obesity, which places greater strain on the vertebrae.

In order to prevent injury, it is recommended that dachshunds be discouraged from jumping and taking stairs. Some people say that taking stairs, will reduce the risk of IVDD because it allows the dog to walk and stay in shape.

Holding the dog properly is important, as well, with both front and rear portions of the body fully supported.

As it has become increasingly apparent that the occurrence and severity of these spinal problems, or intervertebral disk disease, is largely hereditary, responsible breeders are working to eliminate this characteristic in the breed.

My doxie, Wilson, came to me with a full-blown case of separation anxiety. I have yet to help him get rid of it. I have to take him everywhere! But, he is such a sweet little creature. I love all animals, but doxie's are me absolute favorite dog. Thank you for this lens.
