Add A Koi Pond To Your Landscaping Project
by Steven Cancel
A Koi pond is a project that will require a large surface area, and even more research. This illustrious landscape is very stimulating, but also may require some work when the changing of the seasons occurs.
Once the weather breaks and the leaves appear to be changing colors, it is generally a good idea to install netting over the Koi pond to eliminate the amount of leaves and sticks that will land in the Koi habitat. This will drastically lower the amount of debris to be removed at seasons end. Another precaution that should be taken during the break of the weather is winterizing the Koi pond.
In winterizing the fish habitat requires several pieces of advice. One of the most important steps to take into account is the cleaning process. It is wise to physically take the fish out of the pond, place them into a bucket full of the water in the pond, and clean the excess bacteria from the pond. However, completely removing all the bacteria will destroy the harmony of the pond through the summer months; the plants feed off the bacteria while the fish feed off the plants. Other things that need to be removed are the remaining leaves and sticks that were not caught by the netting. Failure of removing these materials will result in creation of methane gas, a byproduct of the decomposing that will occur. Lowering the amount of water will allow the pump to circulate water, allowing the fish to survive below the level of ice that accumulates in the cold weather. Another tip worth perusing is to create a hole in the ice when the winter season approaches. Do not use force when attempting to create a hole. The best method for this is to place a pot filled with boiling water over the ice to allow a hole to be melted into the ice. This will allow the gases that accumulate in the pond to escape.
The largest problem that occurs with the overall presence of the Koi pond is mobility throughout the surrounding area of the piece. Installing a bride over the center or an area of interest will serve a dual purpose. The practical purpose for this landmark is to be able to cross over the pond to access other portions of the yard or landscape. On the other hand, the second purpose of building a bridge is to create the effect of vastness and attractiveness. Bridges can come in a variety of styles with according costs.

Koi Ponds
Did you know that Koi is a carp fish? They are very much like the goldfish in .color and size that most of us think of when thinking about the kinds of fish in tanks and ponds. This is due in large part to the efforts of breeders wanting to increase the Koi fish's' popularity among consumers as some Koi fish varieties have an 'inconspicuous' gray coloring to them. Some of the more 'colorful' Koi are found to have colors such as: black, red, white, blue, and yellow. Koi have ancestral ties to China and Japan. Like goldfish, Koi fish are a hardy breed of small fish.
Koi fish don't need a lot of fussing to keep them in optimum shape either which explains their popularity among the majority of us who aren't looking for yet another task to add to our daily to-do lists. They are a cold water fish and therefore your Koi pond needs to be deep enough to allow them to find cooler water near the bottom of the pond during especially warm months of the year. A Koi pond that has at least 4 feet of depth will also allow your Koi fish to survive wintry temperatures when the surface of the pond is likely to freeze. It is a good idea to place your Koi pond nearby large, leafy trees as this will help to hide your Koi from would-be predators such as birds, raccoons, and neighborhood cats. If predation upon your Koi fish becomes a problem you may need to install some sort of netting that will keep predators from getting into the Koi pond and having a go at the Koi.
So now you have discovered that a Koi pond isn't some new-age contraption for holding seaweed. Instead a Koi pond can be an a mesmerizing scene in which to relax around as you watch your Koi fish swim, eat, and maybe even peek at you from time to time.

Creating A Koi Pond
They're gorgeous and amazing to watch, but they require a bit more care than Goldfish or other pond fish. You will need a large enough area for the Koi to swim in. This requires a larger and deeper pond than you would otherwise need.
You will also need better filtration, because these picky guys are sensitive and won't be able to survive in a pond that doesn't have filtration. They also require deeper water. For your Koi pond, you will need to use smoother rocks on the sides and bottoms, because your picky fish are also curious and rooting fish. They have a big risk of getting injured if you have sharp or pointy rocks.
Smooth rocks will help them keep from getting injured when they are rooting or spawning on the bottom of your pond. You will want to take some sort of precaution against raccoons, as they will happily stand in your pond and munch on your beautiful fish. There are all sorts of things available for this, such as nets or motion detectors.
One of the most popular Koi pond designs is a Japanese or Oriental design, although there are many different kinds of pond designs you can go with. The shape, style and surrounding plants are all up to you. Some people choose to get an architect to draw plans for their Koi pond designs.
It's essential to make sure you get it the way you want it. Koi will live for decades, and you want to have your pond the way you want it so you don't have to change it.
A Koi pond that features a waterfall can be very beautiful. There are different options you can go with for your Koi pond designs, and many different waterfall or fountain options as well. A few other things you want to make sure of is that you feed your Koi on a regular basis.
Unlike goldfish, Koi will not survive if they are not fed daily. You will also want to maintain your pond a little more regularly, and keep it free of leaves or floating debris. Your picky celebrity fish so cannot have trash floating in their home.
Keep these things in mind, and your Koi will live and thrive in your pond.
