"Al Zaeem"

The brother team Bassam and Moumen Al Mulla began filming the Levant series Al Zaeem , featuring over 95 characters and filmed over 90 consecutive days. The project addresses diverse social issues in the Levant. The new project follows on the footsteps of the hit series "Bab El Hara" by the Mulla brothers as well.

The series "Al Zaeem" is reportedly the second project by the Mulla brothers after "Bab El Hara".

Written by Wafiq Al Zaeem, the show stars Mona Wasef, Khaled Taja, Amal Arafa, Basel Khayat, Qais Al Sheikh Najib, Salim Sabri, Saba Mubarak and many others.

Will the Mulla brothers succeed in directing such a series especially with the success that "Bab El Hara" earned?
One of the stars of the series, Wafiq Al Zaeem, says the characters in the project and its context are inspired by the reality of the Levant community.

Wafiq said: "When I finished writing the script my decision was not to let anyone but Bassam Al Mulla direct this project, for my confidence in what he has presented to Levant drama, such as the famous hit series Bab El Hara."

Al Zaeem

Historical drama in Damascus

The historical drama is set in Damascus in the period between the Ottoman withdrawal and before the French occupation from 1918 to 1920.

"Al Zaeem" takes us back to the time when the Turks left Syria, and all the courageous men of Al Harat (neighborhoods) decided on choosing one Zaeem (leader) for all Al Harat. In addition to keeping each Zaeem in charge of his Hara.
Arguments, greed and bravery, Al Zaeem will show us the true life of Al Sham in that period of time, especially that Wafik Al Zaeem, the writer of the show, lived in Al Sham during that era and made a full research before writing the script.
  • Syrian actor Khaled Taja said:"I play the lead role of Al Zaem Abo Dagher, a wealthy merchant in Damascus".
He added, "In the plot, there comes a conflict between my character and another merchant."
He says Al Zaeem's character is known for taking care of his people.
  • Syrian actress Muna Wassef revealed that she's the sister of Al Zaeem in the "Al Zaeem" series to be shown in Ramadan. She stated that she lives with Al Zaeem after her husband and only son pass away. Adding: "aunt Khanem is a strong personality, working to solve Al Zaeem's sons problems". She feels that the role has something close to the reality of her own character. The Syrian actress reported that this series is different from her previous experience, tackling different historic periods before the French occupation of Syria, and also in a different manner than previous projects.
  • Syrian actress Safa Sultan will star in the Levant series "Al Zaeem" .
Safa said: "I play the character of Mariam, the sister of the lead played by Saba Mubarak. Mariam is a Levant girl living with her parents and siblings."
She added: Mariam falls for a young man who comes to her rescue when someone harasses her on the streets, and later on discovers he is one of her cousins. Their relationship evolves into a thrilling romance.
