Anti Drilling and Pro Drilling Enthusiasts, Weigh In!

Alaska Drilling

Drilling in Alaska has been a major issue for the 2008 Presidential election, and a huge major hurdle for environmentalists. With the recent passing of a bill to allow offshore drilling in Alaska, some it will alleviate our dependence on foreign oil. Others say that by the time the small amount of oil is refined and ready it will be ten years down the road, much too long to wait, and possibly not worth the effort, money, and resources.

Drill Baby Drill! We need this oil, and we need to reduce our dependence on foreign oil!

Aly says:

DRILLLL!

KFin says:

I agree with ryan. i could care less what happens to those animals. WE are suffering and they are being prosperous. We didn't slowly climb to the top of the food chain for nothing. Drill. period.

Leslie says:

DRILL

ryan9190 says:

honestly, i really dont care what happens to those animals. We are paying foreign countries for our oil, they could easily cut us off. We need to become more dependent on ourselves. Especially since the economy is in the shits.

ElizabethJeanAllen says:

For. We need to decrease our dependence while we develop renewable resources. Developing renewable resources takes time but we're heading in the right direction. Alaskan oil and offshore oil will give us the time.

thrivingmom says:

We have got to start making a major effort to decrease our dependency on foreign oil. I think we should start drilling more in Alaska and Texas too. But, I don't think this should be our only or even our main effort in becoming less dependent on foreign oil. I think we should be focusing more on developing other fueling options, but while we're doing that it would be great to be getting our oil from our own land.

No way, this won't help much if at all, plus there are consequences to drilling...

Jake says:

i wont drill, the effort and money put into drilling oil in alaska not only wastes resources but its a limited supply. What will we do after it is all gone? go to war with another nation in hopes that it will get us more oil? lives will be then lost. I personally believe that we should use the money and effort put into drilling into finding and perfecting alternative energy which we can have an inifite supply of solar or wind.

RETSEL says:

DRILLING IN ALASKA WONT HELP THE PRICE A THE PUMP AT ALL.
WHEN DEMAND GOES DOWN FOR GAS THE OIL COMPANIES WILL LIMIT THERE REFINING OF OIL TO INCREASE THE PRICE AT THE PUMP. DRILLING IS NOT THE ANSWER TO OUR ENERGY PROBLEMS. DRILL BABY DRILL IS A PROPAGANDA TECHNIQUE TO GET THE VOTES OF THE SHEEP IN THIS COUNTRY. OBAMA IS THE ONLY PRESIDENTAIL CANDIDATE WITH THE CLASS TO SAY THE TRUTH. IT WONT WORK.

Summer1994 says:

Save the environment!STOP DRILLING!!!!!!

Whitney says:

We should go somewhere else to drill that is a wildlife refuge.

triathlontraining says:

I'm against drilling in the ANWR, but there may be other areas of Alaska that would be fine. However, we need to develop other sources of energy, so we are not reliant on this diminishing resource, foreign or domestic.

naturegirl7 says:

The small amount of oil that we would get ten years from now is not worth the damage that it would do to Alaska's environment. We need to put more emphasis on renewable resources and get them into production instead of continuing to rely on fossil fuels.

maria says:

According to the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) managing the refuge, "The Arctic Refuge is among the most complete, pristine, and undisturbed ecosystems on earth. humans are the only selfish species who will destroy everything in our path to benefit us, if we destroy one of our largest undisturbed ecosystems what will we leave for the future generations? their are so many other options like what obama proposes nuclear energy. people lets stop for a second and respect our world... Please!!!!

Ed says:

No way! The payoff for drilling does not make up for the precious loss of habitat and potential loss of species. The polar bears are already struggling! Why give the future generations more problems to deal with? We need to find a permanent solution today instead of passing the buck to future generations and making them figure out how to solve all the world's problems.

Why won't Drilling Work?

Anti drilling facts

  • There's not enough oil to make it worth it. Approximately .2% - 1% of the world's oil.
  • It will harm local wildlife. Drilling traditionally has large negative consequences on local wildlife.
  • The proposed drilling area is directly adjacent to protected lands, and IN protected lands, the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR).
  • Investing the same amount of money and time into alternative energy instead of drilling would bring about quicker, larger, and more positive results without the large impacts on wildlife.

Drill Baby Drill! Popular Reasons to Drill Alaska

Why we should drill Alaska

  • Drilling will reduce our dependence on foreign oil, reducing the amount of money going to countries that support terrorism against the United States.
  • Drilling will lower gas and oil prices temporarily.
  • Drilling in Alaska will create jobs and spark the economy of the United States.
  • There is no true accurate estimate of the amount of oil in Alaska--perhaps there is more than we think.

The key is to expand the use of renewable resources. At this point we should not be burning oil to generate electricity. Wind farms are popping up and solar power is being tapped... We're heading in the right direction but we're not there yet.

I think we have to find alternatives to 'drilling' wherever we live in the world and we have to try to use less energy, too! I'm not too aware of this issue, funny that we don't hear about it in Canada but we do talk a lot about energy in general.

Nicely put together lens!
