Do you know that many of the volcanoes in the U.S.A. are located in Alaska? These are the numbers: 53 volcanoes in the U.S., of these 53 volcanos, 43 can be found in Alaska. The reason for this is that the Aleutian Islands, the Wrangell Mountains, and the Alaska Peninsula, belong all to the well known Ring of Fire which runs from the Pacific Ocean and on through Hawaii.

One of the very active Alaskan volcanos is called Pavlof volcano. It has regularly erupted (over 40 times) since about 1790.

The largest eruption in Alaska occurred in 1912 when the Novarupta/Katmai volcano started to erupt. This volcanic eruption of ashes was so important in volume that the sky in the northern hemisphere turned noticeabley dark for quite a few days. A thick layer of ash coveredthe ground in certain places.

Records about eruption were started in the west in 1741; this was when the famous explorer Vitus Bering arrived in Alaska. Reporting of eruptions started with Kasatochi in 1760. By 1768 four more volcanoes had erupted, and since then, there has been a slow but steady increase.

The volcano observatory in Alaska watches and monitors volcanoes very closely and the observatory is a great source of information if you need to learn more about the volcanoes in the northernmost state..

You can see a lot of the larger volcanoes as you travel in Alaska. The great thing is that many of them are located quite closely together so you don't have to travel too long distances.
