Choosing Between a Large or Small Cruise Ship

When you want to see Alaska by cruise ship, one of the main decisions you have to make is whether you'd like to tour the waters on a large ship or a small ship. Finding the perfect cruise for you often depends on this factor. Here's how to choose what size cruise ship is right for you:

If you are looking at cruising for a longer period, you might want to consider a larger ship so that you can have more to do on board. Bigger ships often have spas, pools, lounges, classes, and movie theaters, as well as a greater selection in the restaurants. Smaller ships will have less to do, so unless you're the kind of person who wants to sit for hours a stare at the water, you might want to pick a bigger ship for a longer trip!

However, you also want to think about the point of your cruise. If you are looking at simply being able to commune with nature and enjoy what you can see from your ship, and you don't want a lot of fancy bells and whistles, you might be happier on a smaller ship. This will allow you to have plenty of time to communicate with yourself and with nature, and will give you plenty of chances to simply just experience the Alaskan beauty. Bigger ships will have more people on board, which will add to the hustle that is all around you. Smaller ships might be more quite.

Think about others going with you on the cruise. On larger ships, Alaskan family cruises are very popular and there will be more chances for your kids to find something to do whether or not they are wowed by the beauty that is all around them. They will be able to interact with other children their own age, and will have more room to run and play. However, if you and your spouse want an intimate getaway, you might enjoy a smaller cruise ship.

You should also think about the possibility of Alaskan shore excursions and what each of the cruise lines has to offer you. Smaller ships might not have as many stops to make, and might not be able to offer you the kinds of deals and experiences that larger ships will. However, with larger ships, each time you go on shore you are going to be surrounded by a lot of other people who are doing the same thing. Taking a small or more private cruise ship might allow you to experience some of these same activities, but in a smaller group.

Lastly, consider price. On a larger ship, as mentioned, you'll have the chance to participate in more activities and choose from more restaurants. On a smaller ship, however, your daily choices will be more limited. Therefore, a larger ship might be more expensive. Of course, this also depends on your room, the length of the cruise, and the options you have for shore excursions. Be sure to research discount Alaskan cruises as you may find ideal deals and savings

Both big cruise ships and small cruise ships give vacationers great choices for seeing Alaska. Which is the right choice for you? Everyone is different. Do your homework before you book your cruise to determine the size of ship that best fits your need.

Tips for choosing the right cruise for your vacation

As far as Alaska cruise vacations go, you have several choices. It is important to choose a cruise that leaves and returns from the right destination for you. It is also important to choose a cruise that takes you to the right experiences and shore trips. You also must pick a cruise that fits your budget. If you have family to take along, or if you have special needs of your own, choosing a cruise might mean that you look into these factors, too. All of these things and more should factor into your choice of cruise line and ship.

Cruising Destination
First, when you are taking an Alaska cruise vacation, you know that you will be cruising the waters around Alaska. However, the Alaskan ports of call you'll visit can vary greatly. Some cruises leave and return from places like San Francisco or Seattle. This allows you to the Canadian shore line, but means that you will spend much more time in the water and less on land. If you choose to leave from a destination within Alaska, the question would be whether or not you would want to return to the same port. If you choose a cruise that leaves from and returns to the same dock, you'll be able to make travel arrangements more easily. However, a cruise that begins at one place in Alaska and ends up in another might offer you much more to see, even if you have to arrange your travel a bit differently.

Available Activities
There are many different shore excursions and experiences available when taking an Alaska cruise. If you would like to visit glaciers, explore Mt. McKinley, or ride on the Alaska Railroad, you need to choose cruise lines and cruise ships that offer these types of excursions. If you are looking for a cruise that simply takes you to beautiful sites, without needing to get off of the boat, a vacation focused on days at sea might be more your style.

Budget Considerations
Your budget is important in picking the perfect Alaska cruise for you. You can find an Alaskan cruise starting at just $500 per person or less, but at the same time, you'll be paying for other things, like transportation to and from the port, as well. If you do your research, chances are good that you will be able to find deals and discount Alaska cruises based on timing and cruise lines. However, keep in mind that the more expensive cruises will have more to offer you. Of course, there are other things that can influence your cruise choice as well:

--> Do you have children? If so, you'll want to pick a cruise line that caters to kids, otherwise they might end up being bored.

--> Interested in meeting that special someone? Many cruise lines offer singles' cruises.

--> Want a romantic getaway? A cruise for adults only or even couples only might be right for you.

Choosing a cruise might seem like a lot of work(and it is), but that research is worth it. You'll be spending a lot of time and money on this vacation - shouldn't it be perfect?
