Ranked #9,457 in Travel & Places, #244,969 overall

Hey, Welcome! Come check out Alaska.

Alaska cruises and inland Alaska tours have become incredibly popular over the past ten years. This lens focuses on the very best things to see and do in Alaska to help plan your cruise or inland Alaska vacation.

So take a poke around. I think you'll find there's far more to Alaska than polar bears and dogsledding (though, I have to admit, taking a dogsled ride IS a pretty amazing experience, and yes, you CAN do this on an Alaska cruise).

The Top 3 Reasons to Take Alaskan Cruises

Harvard Glacier in College Fjord, AlaskaCruises to Alaska have grown ever more popular in recent years. It seems like everyone who comes back from from an Alaskan cruise raves about the experience.

So many vacationers say that their Alaskan cruise was the most amazing trip of their lives. It definitely was my favorite vacation ever.

What is everybody so enthusiastic about? So why exactly is it that the Inside Passage of Alaska is so memorable?

First, there is the beautiful scenery. Odds are, when you think of Alaska, you think of year-round snow and ice. When you travel to Alaska, prepare to have your expectations shattered -- the place is really so much more diverse and beautiful than you'd ever anticipate.

In fact, while you will see some amazing glaciers on your cruise, the surrounding landscape is surprisingly green and lush. Expect to see everything from quiet island chains covered in dense forests to mountains that rise to unblieveable heights - you will defintely want to take tons of pictures.

The next incredible thing about an Alaskan vacation is the variety of day tours that are available to you in each port. You can do everything from ride on a dog sled to climb inside a glacier.

Furthermore, you are able to go on the most amazing whale watches or even more amazing plane rides into misty, otherworldly fjords. The list goes on and on, and the sheer variety of excursions meets or surpasses that of any other cruise that I know of.

Finally, you have the glaciers. On a cruise, you will get to see these vast bodies of ice up close and in action - they literally break off into huge chucks before your eyes. These vast bodies of ice always put on a thrilling show. There's no denying that the glaciers are the highlight of any Alaskan cruise, and you're sure to never forget the experience.

Why I love Alaskan Cruises

Alaska is simply the most amazing place I've ever visited, and there is no better way to see many of the state's most awe-inspiring sights than by taking an Alaskan Cruise.

In fact, many of the most spectacular spots in Alaska, like Glacier Bay National Park, Tracy Arm Fjord, and Misty Fjords National Monument, that can ONLY be seen by boat.

So take a poke around, check out the photos, and tell me this isn't a place you want to experience sometime soon.

Alaskan cruise ports - which are the best?

There are several great ports of call on the Alaska cruise route. So which of these small cities and towns is the best to visit?

If I had to pick a favorite Alaskan port, it would be Juneau. This small city is situated in an absolutely stunning location, on a salt water channel, amidst a scattering of islands, surrounded by mountains in all directions and giant ice fields that extend from these mountains into Canada.

you can take a tram from town to a nearby peak, where the views are simply spectacular, or you can take a short drive to the nearby Mendenhall Glacier, just a few miles from town.

Of course, if you have a little more time and/or money, you can take boat or float plane trips to such amazing spots as Tracy Arm Fjord and Glacier Bay National Park.

I always advise doing your research and planning your stay in Juneau well in advance. There is simply so much to see that you might have a hard time choosing what to do during your day in port!
