Albert Moore was born in New York to a family of artists, brother to the marine painter Henry Moore and son of a portrait and landscape painter. In 1855 Moore relocated to London where he submitted his first two works to the Royal Academy in 1857, both of which adhered to the Pre-Raphaelite style. Moore entered the Royal Academy in 1858 but only remained enrolled for a short time.

At the Schools he befriended Simeon Solomon and the two, along with William Blake Richmond, Henry Holiday, Frederick Walker and Marcus Stone formed a sketching society.

Biography

In 1859 Albert Moore traveled to France to study under architect William Eden and later visited Rome where he was influenced by classical sculpture, including the Elgin Marbles in the British Museum. One of his paintings based upon the Elgin Marbles was The Marble Seat which Moore submitted to the Royal Academy in 1865. The piece caught the attention of fellow artist James Mcneill Whistler, prompting Whistler to write a letter to French painter Henri Fantin-Latour suggesting Moore replace Alphonse Legros in their Société des Trios. Whistler would become a great admirer of Moore's work in the future and the two artist experimented with a new style of painting which combined classicism with Japonisme. Eventually Whistler became concerned with the similarities between the works of Moore and his own though by 1860 they were following different paths. In 1878 Moore testified in behalf of Whistler at the well publicized Whistler-Ruskin trial.

Though Albert Moore's early work consisted mainly of landscapes which reflects the Pre-Raphaelite style, by the mid 1860's he was the producing paintings for which he is known. The subjects consist of classically robed girls and full length single nudes, the first to be exhibited being A Wardrobe. His work has been labeled as Classicist but he was more concerned with the aesthetic qualities of color and space. In desire to paint accurate details he used many props, including having flowers shipped to his studio weekly. Several of his paintings feature floras, from azaleas of Azaleas to daises and the many varieties of wildflowers seen in his final painting, Loves of the Winds and the Seasons. He was a regular contributor to exhibits at the Dudley Gallery located opposite the Royal Academy in the Egyptian Hall and did not require membership as did the Academy. Moore was also one of the artists invited to submit three paintings to the elaborate affair opening the Grosvenor Gallery in 1877 along with other notable artists such as George Frederick Watts, Edward Burne Jones, James McNeill Whistler, James Tissot, John Roddam Spencer Stanhope and William Holman Hunt. This showing helped establish Moore as a leading figure in British aestheticism. In 1884 he became a member of the Royal Watercolor Society.

Albert Moore is considered to be a key figure in the classical revival and aesthetic movement and his paintings achieve a 2-D look with their delicate color and matte finish. He was also well respected by critics for his attention to color harmony. Though considered a recluse he had a following of loyal patrons during his lifetime and taught several students. Albert Moore died after a long illness in September, 1893

Museums: Albert Moore may be found at Dahesh Museum or the Delaware Art Museum.
