Albert Einstein A Genius in Sandals...
This lens is dedicated to Albert Einstein the person; I leave Einstein the scientific genius to those more qualified.
Since the statue makes me want to curl up at his knees and just listen to what he has to say about things, I decided to do just that, listen.
Albert Einstein: One of the World's Most Quotable People
Couldn't Understand Why People Quoted Him So Much
"In the past it would never have occurred to me that every casual remark of mine would be snatched up and recorded. Otherwise I would have crept further into my shell." to his biographer, Carl Seelig, 10/25/53.So, before you read this lens, please promise me that you will not believe that Einstein was a genius at everything! He wouldn't have liked that.. But rather except that he was a great and fascinating man who knew how to turn a phrase.
Oh yes, and one of the remarkable men of the 20th century.
When you are having problems being humble, remember the words of Einstein and take heed: "The only way to escape the corruptible effect of praise is to go on working". And remember his work above all.

Einstein was bemused and perplexed that media and people followed his every word. I hope that you will take this poll and this lens in the same light. The words are useful and wise, but not to be set in stone.

Albert Einstein: The Eyes of Genius
Einstein and God
He is used by 'both sides'.
I have witnessed and participated in many 'discussions' between atheists and believers about the existence of God. People on both have used Einstein's quotes to make their points. And people on both sides claim him as 'theirs'.This is an example of the dangers of taking any quotes too seriously.
It certainly helps us understand why Albert Einstein was leery of all the ruckus. So read the quotes, look at the poll and vote...but remember that he was the only expert on Albert Einstein and physics.
"I want to know how God created this world. I am not interested in this or that phenomenon, in the spectrum of this or that element. I want to know his thoughts. The rest are details."
"I believe in Spinoza's God who reveals himself in the harmony of all that exists, but not in a god who concerns himself with the fate and actions of human beings."
"I assert that the cosmic religious experience is the strongest and the noblest driving force behind scientific research."
"Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind."
"No idea is conceived in our mind independent of our five senses."
"The main source of the present-day conflicts between the spheres of religion and science lie in the concept of a personal god."
"There are fanatical atheists whose intolerance is the same as that of the religious fanatics, and it springs from the same source....They are creatures who can't hear the music of the spheres."
"The idea of the personal God is quite alien to me and seems even naive."
"The further the spiritual evolution of mankind advances, the more certain it seems to me that the path to genuine religiosity does not lie through the fear of life, and the fear of death, and blind faith, but through striving after rational knowledge".
.
Einstein did not believe in a personal god, does that make him an atheist?
Was Einstein an atheist?
Fetching blurbs now... please stand byNo, he saw God in everything and revered God.
cjjc says:
I think Julie put it best. Einstein was a mystic. He was searching for a unified theory because he "knew" the uni-verse was uni-ty.
I also agree, by definition, unity is not personal. As soon as we are born, we separate from unity, it's this separation and our longing to go back, that starts causing us problems. (okay, i'll quit lecturing :) )

Einstein was a mystic. he "believed in Spinoza's God who reveals him self in the harmony of all that exists..."
His statements regarding a personal God "not a God who concerns himself with the fates and actions of human beings" - I think of this as the Tao, from which everything is born. The Tao is not personal.

You are correct, he did say things like that. He also said that he didn't believe in a personal God, thus the controversy. I think this is why it is true, because it contradicts!

I always thought Einstein said his motivation was to know the mind of God, or something like that.
Posted August 31, 2008
He was using analogies, he was definnately an atheist.
Margo_Arrowsmith says:
Noadi, Thanks for the thoughtful comments. I have known so many atheists (I was one) who are so quick to deny any and everything to the point of not even discussing it. Its good to know a positive atheist!

Noadi says:
Instead of believing in a personal god he believed in the beauty and complexity of the universe. God as a metaphor for nature and the wonder it inspires, no need for something supernatural. I very much believe the same thing. People think of atheist as a negative thing and sure there are plenty of negative atheist but more of us instead find the world and universe to be more inspiring than any religious faith.

spirituality says:
Depends on how you define 'atheist'. He did not believe in a personal God, but in (I think) a spiritual essence to everything.

The New Library
However, 10 years later when I sold my Raleigh house, I couldn't face moving them across town. I purged, and purged when I moved again. And frankly, although I still believe that every room needs books, I am beginning to see walls of them as oppressive.
Enter the Kindle. I think this will save my life! Not only can I have my entire library with me at all times, but the books are much less expensive AND I am saving forests.
Its a win/win all the way around. Just so long as I have some books in each room!

It is unwise to travel without books. You never know when you will have a long wait in an airport, well these days you can count on it. There will be rainy days, or days when you just need to get away from others, into a book.
However, which books to take? I can pack with a minimum of cloths; good thing too, because I always take too many books!
Kindle to the rescue! You can have your entire library with you at all times in a machine that isn't much bigger than a trade sized paper back.
This is the future.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this lens, and I was so pleasantly surprised! Everybody loves Einstein and so much has been written. I've seen websites with quotes. I've seen books done on his life and read some of his work. you have made a wonderful lens about Einstein the person! What a great beginning shot. Where is that statue located?
You have a picture where there are a pair of dice, do you know the quote which inspired that image? "God does not play dice with the universe"
