An Albino Pet Fish Named Oscar

There are no fundamental differences between albino Oscar cichlid fish and the colored ones except that albinos are albino and the ones with colors have colors. Their traits, diet requirements, conditions for care and upkeep remain the same so don't let a preconceived bias mislead you. Besides, albinos can grow into beautiful, striking fish if properly cared for.

Let me introduce you to Oscar, an albino velvet cichlid with beautiful orange markings on his scales, whom I have had for almost three years. He's been eating well, growing steadily and ruling my aquarium with an attention-seeking charm that his other tank-mates cannot match. Oscars are great choices for fish if you are looking for more than an 'ornament' with fins and will rapidly become an integral part of your family.

Ask my mom! She isn't into pet-keeping and fish-research but Oscar changed all that. She fusses over him at the aquarium glass, insists that they are fed on time and that their water is squeaky clean. If that's not enough, there is even an introduction session for all the guests that visit my apartment. If you are thinking of getting yourself an Oscar fish, consider it a fact that you could be investing in an aquarium puppy. They have this charm that other tropical freshwater fish cannot even hope to replicate.

Why I Named My Oscar Fish 'Oscar'

Having always longed for an Oscar fish, the reality of eventually being able to own one was a highlight. The albino Oscar was IT, he was THE OSCAR in every sense and never wasted a moment when I added him into the aquarium. Curious as ever, he nipped at the plastic plants, stared at his tank-mates from the corner of his eyes, took a tour of his new home through drift-wood tunnels and unsettled gravel. He made it very clear that he was the new boss and made no bones about being an entertainer without match. It was only fitting that I named him after his species. It's almost impossible to tell a female Oscar from a male one from their appearances so I settled for a boy's name to match his personality.

My Albino Oscar Grew and Grew!

Albino Oscar FishIt's amazing how fast Oscar fish grow; no wonder, then, that they eat so much! Oscar himself was barely 1.5 inches long when I brought him home and he's grown to about 10 inches. If you are considering buying a baby Oscar fish, do ensure that your aquarium is big enough to house it in the future. A 40-50 gallon tank is ideal but much larger tanks are required if you wish to own a group of these vivacious fish. In the beginning, Oscar fed on frozen blood-worms and brine shrimp but this changed when I switched to a balance of Beef heart (sparingly), brine shrimp and Oscar Pellets six months down the line. The Hikari brand of fish food has some excellent choices for Oscar fish as well and their Oscar pellets are a hit with Oscar fish owners.

Please do not feed your fish 'feeder' fish from the pet store as they are open to all kinds of disease. I also don't recommend feeding them live rats and frogs (as some do for the entertainment of it) but that's my personal opinion.

Remember to get the water conditions right as well. If the water conditions are adverse, Oscar fish growth is likely to halt and you may have a very sick fish on your hands. The ideal pH should be between 6-8 and temperature range between 75 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. You will soon realize that Oscar fish mess a lot and contribute liberally to aquarium pollution. Invest in a good filtration system and clean out water (two-thirds) at least once a week.

Oscar Fish Diet - Beef Heart

It's True. Oscar Fish Can Be Greedy!

Have you tried feeding your Oscar fish a diet comprising of Beef Heart? While some Oscar owners feed this sparingly, there are those who incorporate it into their pet's regular dietary intake. Oscars love Beef Heart and I've begun feeding this to them with increased frequency. My Oscars have grown and I figured that this lean and protein-rich meat would prove to be a lot more wholesome. I now feed them Beef Heart about once in two days. When feeding Oscar fish Beef Heart ensure -

1. The meat is fresh
2. It is washed well
3. The fatty covering is removed
4. The meat is chopped in proportion to the Oscar's size
5. No unfinished meat is left in the tank

Looking For More Variety In Your Oscar's Diet?

I've read some good reviews about the HBH brand of Oscar fish food including one on Amazon.com. Hikari Cichlid Gold Large Pellets receive good reviews too and are perfect for Oscar fish diets. I know of some owners who like changing it around a little so that their Oscar fish don't get hooked onto a particular variety.

Choosing Oscar Fish Tank Mates

I had to figure this out the hard way when it came to my albino Oscar fish. They aren't as aggressive as most people make them out to be but they love to eat and that can be dangerous for fish that will fit in their mouths. I will have to confess, has had his share of fish in my aquarium. He out grew some of them so soon that they were inevitable meals. I should have realized this sooner but we all learn through experience. Oscar has eaten a baby Tiger Barb, a Black Skirt Tetra and a small albino Catfish. Today, Oscar shares his home with a black Tiger Oscar (a little smaller than him), a pair of Jewel Cichlids, and a medium-sized non-interfering Pleco. Some Oscar fish owners recommend Blue Acara, Firemouths, Chocolate Cichlids, Silver Dollars and Severums.

Steer clear of fish such as Blood Parrots, Jack Dempsey, Flowerhorns and any kind of South African cichlid because they will make life miserable for an Oscar fish that wants to be everyone's boss.

Oscar Does His Own Decorating

Red Tail Shark FishOscar insists on re-decorating the aquarium the way he likes it. That means, the plastic plants I have in there are always moved around, pebbles become football balls while shells and other pretty aquarium ornaments are tossed about like trash. But that's what impresses me about Oscar fish. There is never a dull moment. While I haven't given too much consideration to ensuring that Oscar leaves things the way I like it (it's his home after all) I did do away with live plants because he would just shred all the leaves and create a storm of green. I also added pebbles to take his attention away from the gravel base (some owners prefer a rocky base for this very reason).

Interesting Oscar Fish Traits

My Albino Oscar Is Funny and Unique!

I've heard that albino Oscar fish are less aggressive than the colored variety but I'm not sure how this can be true. I have a black Tiger Oscar too but there is hardly any difference. While the black chap goes about his own business, waiting for food and examining the corners of the aquarium, it is Oscar who seems to have the more dynamic personality. While both do this aggressive but very cute dance by the aquarium glass during feeding time, Oscar has found quite a few more ways to entertained and be entertained. He has this fascination to follow my family members and me from one end of the aquarium glass to the other in a game of catch, pecks at the glass when someone comes by, stares out from the glass right into the hall room until you've noticed his craving for attention, plays with pebbles by spreading them all over the aquarium and gets into mood swings by laying on the bottom until someone gives him the spotlight.

I have also heard of stories of owners having trained their Oscar fish to do little tricks and I'm not surprised. Here's looking forward to many, many ears with my albino Oscar named Oscar and I'll recommend a pet like him to anyone interested in fish keeping.

Mixing African Malawi Cichlids With Oscars

Mistakes Fish Owners Make

A lot of Oscar fish owners make the mistake of mixing their South American Oscars with the more aggressive Lake Malawi Cichlids and that's a recipe for disaster. Oscar fish like being the bosses and the Lake Malawi ones are fiercely territorial. I made this mistake myself initially and would caution aquarium lovers against repeating it. The beautiful powder blue Malawi Cichlid you see in the picture ruled and bullied the other fish around him, including my Oscar. It eventually had to be excavated. Malawi Cichlids are beautiful fish and if you have a fascination for them, keep your Oscars way out of reach. Don't mix them!

Keeping Flowerhorns With Oscar Fish

A Very Big NO!

Flowerhorn_fish"Can I keep Flowerhorns with Oscar fish?", "Will Oscar Fish eat Flowerhorns?" - these are some of the questions often asked by Flowerhorn and Oscar Fish owners. True, both Flowerhorns and Oscar Fish have very vivacious personalities and provide aquarium owners with countless hours of entertainment but the answer to mixing these two species is a very big NO. Flowerhorns are best kept in solitude; they are extremely aggressive and will give the Oscar fish a tough time. Don't even think about keeping Flowerhorns with Oscars. I hope this clarifies a doubt.

I forgot to mention that this is not just cute but very informative on adopting an Oscar....you can't take a goldfish for a walk, but do you have a leash for Oscar?

An "aquarium puppy", just made me smile and had not thought of an Oscar, I'd probably copy you and name him Oscar too because you just charmed my heart. I love that your Mom does introductions to visitors, sweetness...and blessed!...!
