Alco Diesel Locomotives
Ranked #7,078 in Hobbies, Games & Toys, #89,646 overall
The American Locomotive Company (Alco) was an early industry leader in the diesel electric locomotive field prior to World War II, having produced the first mass-produced diesel boxcabs in the mid-1920s. Alco's lead was to evaporate with the US entry into World War II; the company had the DL-series road diesel design ready, but wartime restrictions would keep production of the type low. The company was forced to concentrate on mainline steam locomotives, while competitor EMD, which had never built steam, was able to get a head start with its FT freight diesels. Alco's highly successful RS switcher line was allowed to proceed, but for a time production was dedicated to assist the Russian war effort rather than domestic sales.
Postwar, Alco's PA and FA passenger and freight diesels competed with EMD's E- and F-unit "covered wagons" but the company was never able to pull into the lead. The RS-series switchers continued to sell, and by the early 1960s the "Cenntury" locomotives had benn introduced to compete with EMD and GE roadswitcher designs. However, the writing was on the wall, and by early 1969 Alco had built its last locomotive. The later Century designs were built for a time by the Montreal Locomotive Works, and even today many Alco locomotives can be seen in daily use.

The Union Pacific rostered 44 FA-1s and an equal number of booster units.
Alco DL-109
The DL-109 was Alco's first mass-produced cab unit, precedding the PA series by a number of years. Distinctive by their three-panel cab windows, the DL-109s were only bought in any significant numbers by the New Haven, although the C&NW, GM&O, Milwaukee Road, Rock Island, Santa Fe, and the Southern each had a few examples on their rosters. The NH used the DL-109s to meet a wartime traffic surge, and the locomotives were almost constantly in use, hauling passengers by day and freight at night.
By the mid 1960s, the sole DL-109 left was a New Haven unit that had been used for a time as a power plant. The derelict hulk was finally broken up in 1969.

Alco C-415
The 415 was Alco's last switcher design, and by the time it appeared in 1966, Alco was not long for the locomotive market, being edged out by GE and EMD. Only 26 C-415s were built; Rock Island and Southern Pacific were the major operators, each buying ten examples. SP&S bought a pair, and these survived into the Burlington Northern days. The prime mover was an Alco 251-F.

Alco C636
Alco's long history of locomotive production ended with the Century 636 of 1967-68; by this point the company was well behind its EMD and GE competitors, and early traction motor blower failures of a demonstrator C636 during trials helped put an end to any hope of remaining in the market. The C636 was a 251E-powered outgrowth of the C630, rated at 3,600hp. Domestically, only IC, SP&S, and Penn Central bought 636s, with Alco production totaling 34 units. After Alco left the market, A.E. Goodwin turned out an additional 29 locomotives for Australian customers. In Canada, MLW continued production for a time as the M636 with Dofasco trucks for CN, CP, Cartier, and Ferrocaril del Pacfico in Mexico.
The SP&S 636s were inherited by successor Burlington Northern and retired by 1980, and similar fates befell the ICG (ex IC) and Conrail (ex PC) units.
HO scale model C636s were made by Oriental Limited in Illinois Central, SP&S, Burlington Northern, and Conrail paint schemes.
