Are you an Alcoholic? find out more:

A circumstance whose outcome is the regular and routine consumption of alcohol or alcoholic beverages, in spite of social and personal ramifications is most commonly termed as alcoholism and the person is tabbed as an alcoholic. Alcoholism is also been noted and referred to as a reliance, a sickness, an obsession. Alcoholism is also usually a condition in which an "alcoholic" cannot control his or her consumption and is usually dazed.

Alcohol usage does not forecast the build up of alcoholism, but drinking is essential to develop alcoholism.  Various parameters like regularity, etc. of consumption directly do weight the development of alcoholism. These parameters vary from person to person and are also are dependent on external circumstances. There seems to diverse terminology between medical professionals, treatment centers and the public in general.

In medical definitions alcoholism is often cited as an illness or sickness and chronic. Alcoholism is often clubbed with substance abuse or/and drug abuse. Alcoholism also leads to contortions in thinking. General definition constitutes habitual and obsessive consumption of alcohol and its derivatives. Alcoholism is also, often seen as act of escapism. The terminology has become diverse, vague and murky, further obscured by religion and politics.

How alcohol can affect people's lives

Three terms describe the consumption of alcohol, giving boundaries to the definitions of alcoholism. Using alcohol refers to simple, occasional alcohol consumption. Misusing alcohol generally refers to fact of having too much alcohol and being "drunk", making yourself a social liability, if you may. Misusing alcohol, again, is dependent on the capacity of the individual. Abusing alcohol means illegally using alcohol, over excessive and compulsive usage, dependence on alcohol. The precise definition of alcoholism is widely debated.

Alcohol consumption can be screened and based on the results, it can be determined as alcoholism or alcohol abuse. It is difficult to separate a person who drinks frequently and an alcoholic. Alcoholism can be identified, by measuring the damage inflicted to the alcoholic and by the alcoholic, also if the person is dependant on the consumption and is obsessive about the consumption. It is also believed by some experts that alcoholism is genetic. Alcoholism is self destructive, it is known for a fact that alcoholics still continue consumption after external and internal obvious heath effects. Alcoholism can lead to liver cirrhosis, dementia, heart disorders, sexual dysfunction and death.

Alcoholics can be treated, but the treatment again is varied. Medical treatment usually involves prescription drugs and may cause prescription drug abuse in some patients. Most treatments involve abrupt suspension of any and all alcohol intake. During this period the patient is exposed to life training, like yoga lessons and other rehab exercises. Since alcoholism is also a psychological problem, it should be addressed from that angle also. In fact there are multiple vertices that led to abuse, that need to taken care of while treating alcoholism, this may prevent a relapse. Detoxification is often used, followed by some sort of life support therapy, like group therapy. Usually no tolerance based approaches to treatment are the based, as compared to slab based reduction treatments.
