Do Genetics And Alcoholism Share An Entwined Relationship

Discussing whether alcoholism and genetics go hand-in-hand

Research on Alcoholism and Genetics

Ancient ideas were that alcoholism and genetics went hand-in-hand. It ran in the family, or was hereditary. Research in the 1970's showed that this was in fact the truth. If your father was an alcoholic you very well could become an alcoholic. Did the research show that the reason for it being, so called hereditary, was basically because children learn to do what their parents do? If your parents taught you to be a Catholic you most likely will continue in the religion of a Catholic. The same is true with drinking, smoking, and abusing illegal drugs.

The only types of things that can be passed down to your children through genetics are real medical conditions that are beyond their control. Consuming alcohol is something that every person has the choice to make. You can't become an alcoholic or a slave to alcoholism if you never take that first drink. Diseases and characteristic traits are the only things that can genetically be passed on and can be checked with health screening tests. You also pass on the way you have raised your children, but that is something they can change. If they didn't like the way they were brought up, they can learn from some other source on how to raise a family.

Like mentioned before, nobody likes to take responsibility for their own actions. We have to stop blaming our parents for the way we are. They do not control us with mind powers; we have the blessing of free will and the ability to make our own choices. If you are an alcoholic it is your own fault. Alcoholism and genetics really do not go hand-in-hand. Genetics are something that you can't control. Alcoholism facts show that this is something that each person has the choice to be a part of. If you are smart, you will steer clear from the temptation of alcohol and you won't have to worry about becoming an alcoholic. Be the one to prove facts and the statistics wrong. The world needs to know that we are not how our parents make us; we are who we make ourselves be. We determine our own fate. We are our own person. Nobody has strings from above controlling our every move. You make every decision in your life, whether good or bad. Take responsibility for your own actions and learn to deal with them. Show the world that alcoholism and genetics don't have anything but a couple letters in common. Let's make the world a better place.
