Alessi is famous for its playful design of affordable objects and appliances for the kitchen and the home created in colorful plastics and stainless steel. For the designs, Alessi contracts a selection of celebrity architects and designers such as Alessandro Mendini, Ettore Sottsass, Richard Sapper, Achille Castiglioni, Zaha Hadid, Toyo Ito, Tom Kovac, Greg Lynn, MVRDV, Jean Nouvel, UN Studio, Michael Graves (Alessi kettle with the bird shaped whistle - pictured), Philippe Starck (Alessi Juicy Salif citrus squeezer), Jasper Morrison, Hans Hollein, Norman Foster and many more

Alessi Company History

The family history behing the Italian Design Factory...

In the early 1900s, along the shores of Lake San Giulio, a craftsman and small business owner who realized the potential of this region in terms of design, with many factories manufacturing household furnishings, Giovanni Alessi, a sheet-metal worker, founded Alessi in 1921 to produce crafted products in metal for eating and drinking.
In 1935, Carlo Alessi, son of Giovanni, was named design chief. In 1945 he ascended to chief executive and designed the coffee service Bombé, an industrial piece manufactured in four sizes. That same year, Carlo was joined in the company by his brother Ettore Alessi. Heading Alessi's technical department in the '50s, Ettore opened the company, in 1955, to collaboration with outside designers, including architects Carlo Mazzeri, Luigi Massoni, and Anselmo Vitale.
In 1970, Alberto Alessi, a recent law school graduate, came to work at Alessi.
By the 1980s, Alberto took over the management of Alessi and launched the Alessi company into the design decade through collaborations with designers and architects such as Alessandro Mendini, Ettore Sottsass, Jasper Morrison, Hans Hollein, Norman Foster, Richard Sapper, and Achille Castiglioni. In 2004 Alessi launched the Tea & Coffee Towers, with a new generation of architects such as Zaha Hadid, Toyo Ito, Tom Kovac, Greg Lynn, MVRDV, Jean Nouvel, and UN Studio.
Among the best known of the company's product range are Richard Sapper's kettle with a two-tone whistle, Michael Graves' kettle with the bird shaped whistle, and Philippe Starck's Juicy Salif citrus squeezer.
In 2006, the company reclassified their products under three lines: A di Alessi (products with lower price points), Alessi (the main collection) and Officina Alessi (the most experimental edition)

The new Alessi Chin Family of products

"The Chin Family" series for the "A di Alessi" catalogue: a group of characters, each of whom represents a specific household function.

The National Palace Museum in Taiwan hosted on 23 May an event to launch the Museum's new mascot and present "The Chin Family", a project designed by Stefano Giovannoni with Rumiko Takeda, in collaboration with Alessi and the NPM.
Big posters featuring all the "members" of The Chin Family were put on display in a specially designed square in front of the main entrance to the Museum.
Stefano Giovannoni held a conference that was open to students and designers. Together with the Director of the Museum, he spoke about the collaboration between Alessi and the National Palace Museum and about the invitation received to envisage and design a mascot for the new 21st century Museum.
From this was born "The Chin Family" series for the "A di Alessi" catalogue: a group of characters, each of whom represents a specific household function.
The event was attended by numerous guests and members of the press as well as by Taiwan's most important television networks. During the launch, ten "Chin Family" sets signed by Stefano Giovannoni were auctioned, with the proceeds going to the Museum Foundation for study grants. The first specially packaged set N°1, that had been signed by both the designer and the Director of the NPM, fetched about %u20AC10,000. That evening, there were news reports about the event on all the main television networks, and Taiwanese shops stocking "The Chin Family" were inundated with customers snapping them up.

How is Alessi evolving?

By Alberto Alessi

The Alessi business venture started in the 1920's and it was highly innovative right from the very start, always ready to experiment and take a more poetical view of the world, though it was very much based on the traditional production methods and materials, such as metal and stainless steel. In recent years many new materials have been introduced, offering to the Alessi designers new expressive possibilities and to customers some surprising new items and wonderful little discoveries. "This project began with the desire to work with the more delicate, intimate, sensorial and confidential needs of people. Our starting point was to reproduce through design the animistic process of object creation common to the world of children's drawings and primitive cultures, going beyond the mere aesthetic, stylistic and cultural aspects. The objects have thus become items to be used for playing, telling stories, giving and enchanting the everyday view, encouraging playfulness and stimulating the flights of fantasy." Alberto Alessi

Alessi New Products Fall Winter 2007

Three brands for a strong, continually evolving company

All for one, one for all. Spring 2006 is over, but not too far away. The reclassification of Alessi products into three different brands does nothing but bring out success-oriented excellence.
The company based in Omegna has a way of speaking without words with the best contemporary design, exclusive work groups, and strong cultural and aesthetic interests.
Its catalogues grow richer in functional excitement from collection to collection. A workshop of contemporary design that reaches increasingly more ambitious goals. Three brands, each with audience objectives and result targets.

Officina Alessi welcomes the most challenging and refined products with delicate elegance, often crowning projects by internationally renowned authors. The new products for the Fall/Winter presentation are all signed by architects that have taken part in the large meta-project "Tea & Coffee Towers" of 2003: the Teacup with saucer from the series "Fruit basket" designed by Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa / SANAA and the Mocha cup "SUPA_CUP" with saucer and coordinating coffee spoon by the Australian Tom Kovac will be presented.

Alessi is the main and the most traditional brand, expressing quality, technology and design.

Its Fall/Winter 2007 collection introduces a large number of new objects which are outstanding from the planning point of view, along with some series expansions: the Hand blender "mix.it" by Wiel Arets; the "Colombina collection" Table set by Doriana and Massimiliano Fuksas; the new version of "La Bella Tavola" Table set in bone china by Ettore Sottsass; the new "Tibidabo" Serving set by Kristiina Lassus; the Three-section sugar/tea bags holder by Pierre Charpin; the personal Olive oil taster by Lorenzo Piccione di Pianogrillo and Köbi Wiesendanger; the Trivet with adjustable elements "tripod" by LPWK/Gabriele Chiave; the Stand for oil and vinegar cruets and the Tea/sugar bags holder "CACTUS!" by LPWK/Marta Sansoni; the new items from the "Mediterraneo" series by LPWK/Emma Silvestris; the Wall clock "Blow up" by the Fratelli Campana the Key ring "jalk" by LPWK/Steven Blaess; the new version of the "Alessandro M." Corkscrew by Alessandro Mendini.

A di Alessi is comprised of magic forms, colours, and materials, products which are more accessible to a larger public at decisively lower prices, and always with the mark of excellence. The Fall/Winter collection presents the second part of "The Chin Family" designed by Stefano Giovannoni with Rumiko Takeda; the first issue of the "Figure" project (LPWK/ Massimo Giacon, Marcello Jori and Miriam Mirri), the "Iglù" Cheese board and Tray by Miriam Mirri and the "401" Coffee and tea service by Kristiina Lassus.

Products of the A di Alessi brand are also linked to an intense and profitable partnership with the Ai.Bi., Amici dei Bambini Association. Alessi, as always "The Dream Factory", has established its mission of fulfilling the dreams of less-fortunate children.
