Art, posters, books and video

Alex Grey (born November 29, 1953) is an American artist specializing in spiritual and visionary art. There is a clear connection with the world of alternative spirituality aka New Age. Grey is a practitioner of Vajrayana Buddhism. As an artist his work spans a wide variety of forms: from performance art, process art, installation art, sculpture, visionary art, to painting. His paintings have made him into an internet phenomenon.

In the world of alternative spirituality Grey has made his mark as a member of the Integral Institute, a member of the the board of advisors for the Center for Cognitive Liberty and Ethics, and as the Chair of Wisdom University's Sacred Art Department. As if that wasn't enough, he and his wife Allyson Grey are the co-founders of the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, a non-profit institution supporting Visionary Culture in New York City.

On this page you will find a selection of his art, his books and an inventory of his spiritual background. I was pleasantly surprised to see theosophy prominently mentioned on his link page. More famous theosophists.

The Mission of Art

In this book Alex Grey explores the mystical potential of art: he argues that the process of artistic creation can (and should) play a role in the enlightenment of the artist. For him, the process of artistic creation holds the potential of transcending the limitations of the mind and more fully expressing the divine spirit. He also believes that art can induce within the viewer an elevated state wherein spiritual states of being are attained.

I think his audience agrees that if any art is capable of inducing spiritual states, it's his.

This unique series of paintings takes the viewer on a graphic, visionary journey through the physical, metaphysical, and spiritual anatomy of the self. Net Of Being

Net Of Being

The Net of Being establishes a new order of infinite space composed of and continuous with infinite consciousness. A fiery web of eyes and galaxies form a realm of total interconnectedness. A grid of Godheads implies mirror-like inter-reflectivity throughout space. The shared heart of each four-faced Quad God sheds an eerie underlight, as a ball of white light inside each head sources luminosity for a level above and beyond sight, a mesh evocative of the mythic Jewel Net of Indra of Buddhafields from the Avatamsaka Sutra.

Healing the Luminous Body - The Way of the Shaman with Dr. Alberto Villoldo

In this fascinating and informative DVD, best-selling author, medical anthropologist and shaman-healer of the Inka tradition Alberto Villoldo, Ph.D., introduces viewers to the luminous energy field that surrounds and informs the physical body like a blueprint of life. Unveiling the secret of ancient shaman-healers, he teaches that many of our physical and psychological problems stem from imprints within our luminous body.

During the course of this DVD, Dr. Villoldo reveals the extraordinary nature of this luminous energy field and how, by understanding its nature, we can actually heal ourselves and each other. Once the luminous field is cleared, Dr. Villoldo explains, true physical and emotional healing can begin.

Trained as a medical anthropologist, Dr. Villoldo left the academic world behind twenty years ago to study among the Inka shamans. It was in the Andes mountains of South America that he discovered the wisdom of the luminous energy field from the indigenous shamans. This ancient knowledge reveals the secret of true heath and happiness.

To aid Dr. Villoldo in explaining the luminous energy field, the paintings of visionary artist Alex Grey are presented. No other artist has depicted the luminous energy field in all of its intricacies as clearly as Alex Grey. Dr. Villoldo's presentation, together with Alex Grey's images help us to gain a deeper perception of the path to spiritual , emotional and physical well-being.

Many of our illnesses, psychological disorders, addictions and failed relationships can be traced to faulty imprints in our luminous energy fields. In this DVD, Dr. Villoldo reveals how to heal and recover from these destructive imprints.

Join Dr. Villoldo, as he travels to the Andes Mountains to learn the secret of the ancient shamans, a secret that can lead all of us to heath, happiness and beauty.

Collective Vision

Collective Vision

"The many faces of Collective Vision united by the mandalic eye-field suggest both expansion of consciousness and sharing of consciousness with other beings. The painting was based on a profoundly ego dissolving entheogenic mystical trance where I heard the words, 'Infinite Oneness... the Oneness should never forget the Infinitude and the Infinitude should never forget the Oneness...' The Visionary Art of Alex Grey

Visionary Paintings

Grey's paintings can be described as a blend of sacred, visionary art and postmodern art. He is best known for his paintings of glowing anatomical human bodies, images that "x-ray" the multiple layers of reality. His art is a complex integration of body, mind, soul, and spirit.

'The Sacred Mirrors', a life-sized series of 21 paintings, took 10 years to complete, and examines in detail the physical and metaphysical anatomy of the individual.

Many of his paintings include detailed representations of the skeleton, nervous system, cardiovascular system, and lymphatic system. Grey applies this multidimensional perspective to paint the universal human experience. His figures are shown in positions such as praying, meditating, kissing, copulating, pregnancy, birth and death. His work incorporates many religious symbols, including auras, chakras, and icons with geometric shapes and tessellations in natural, industrial, and multicultural situations.

The paintings are permeated with an intense and subtle light that is rare in art history.

Alex Grey's eclectic spiritual tastes

On wikipedia all it says about the spiritual background Of Alex Grey is that he is a Vajrayana practitioner and involved in integral spirituality. His website tells us a bit more. From the link list there we can tell that he's

  • into theosophy: links to the Theosophical Society in America (TS Adyar)

  • into Hermeticism: an ancient tradition associated with Egypt and the Middle East in which the Unity of all is stressed

  • into Buddhism of course: specifically, his teacher was Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche a Dzog Chen meditation teacher.

  • into Buddhism: Dzog Chen stresses the direct experience of Enlightenment. Another inspiration is Lama Surya Das, one of the first westerners to take advantage of the Tibetan Buddhist teachers coming out into the open. Lama Surya Das is so famous I'd personally assumed he was already dead, but he isn't. He's still out there teaching.

  • into psychical research and paranormal phenomena (no surprise if he's into theosopy, or is it the other way around?)

  • mentions UFO's, crop circles, chakras, acupuncture, sacred dance

  • inspired by William James, Wilhelm Reich

  • believes in healing and mentions 'Therapeutic Touch', the theosophical healing method

  • into psychotropics like mushrooms and peyote
After seeing this veritable catalog of new age interests, it's a bit weird to read on wikipedia that his work is only 'sometimes associated with new age'. Of course the term 'new age' is a bit controversial, but if it has any value at all, Alex Grey is right there in the middle of the action.

Unfortunately I can't find the URL for the link page, or I'd have linked to it to prove this summary...

NONE of these "Alex Grey" blotters artwork pieces have been approved by the artist. Please remove all links to this person's counterfeit work. They have been asked several times to stop producing and selling this unapproved work. (Also $99 for a 2010 Calendar is ridiculous, we sold these on www.shop.cosm.org for less than $5 since they're out of date, this person is simply ripping people off.) This is the Shop Manager of the CoSM Shop, please contact me if necessary. 845.297.2323
