A Founding Father of the United States of America

Alexander Hamilton was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America. A political philosopher, he was one of the main authors of The Federalist Papers. As an economist, he was chosen as first United States Secretary of the Treasury and founded the U.S. Mint and the First National Bank.

Hamilton wasn't born in New York, but instead was from the West Indies. His father was the non-inheriting son in the long line of a well-to-do family in Scotland, so without forced duties of family he wandered about the West Indies and ended up having two children with a woman that had been married previously so couldn't remarry by law.

Three reasons to love Alexander Hamilton

1. Alexander Hamilton was one of the Founding Fathers of the US.

2. Alexander Hamilton was chosen as first United States Secretary of the Treasury and thus eventually wound up on the $10 bill.

3. We also have him to thank for establishing federal taxes on whiskey.

Was Alexander Hamilton President?

Asylum's Anthony Layser investigates whether or not Alexander Hamilton was ever President of the United States. A funny video that seems inspired by Jay Leno's Jaywalking.

Alexander Hamilton's Birthplace

Alexander Hamilton Museum

Alexander Hamilton was born in Nevis, in the West Indies. There is now and Alexander Hamilton Museum in Charlestown, Nevis at his birthplace. This is of historical significance to most, and genealogical interest to me. Alexander Hamilton's brother James Hamilton was one of my ancestors thus this building was likely his birthplace as well. From what I gather, my great-many-times grandfather James Hamilton was not quite the natural born leader that his famous brother, and instead frittered away his life in the West Indies. As I recall, James once wrote his brother Alexander asking for money, and Alexander wrote back that he should get a job (or something along those lines).
