Alexander Ovechkin Will Win NHL Goal Scoring Title Again

Ovechkin Will Be Trying To Step Up His Game For the 2011-12 NHL Season

Alexander Ovechkin is developing into the NHL's pre-eminent goalscorer. After shattering Luc Robitaille's record for most goals by a right winger, Ovechkin ended the 2007-08 season with 65 goals - more than anyone has scored since Mario Lemieux. Along with being named league MVP, and getting awarded the Art Ross Trophy as scoring leader, Ovechkin won the Rocket Richard Trophy as league leader for most goals scored. He won the Rocket Richard Trophy for the 2nd straight time in 2008-09. Will Ovechkin be the 1st ever three-time winner of the Rocket Richard Trophy?

Is it possible Ovechkin will break the 70-goal plateau? Yes, says Wayne Gretzky, who predicts that Ovechkin could actually hit the 90-goal mark. That won't happen this season, but Ovechkin should hit the 50 goal mark yet again.

Bradshaw predicts:

With a recent hat trick, Ovechkin now has 42 goals with 23 games left in the 2009-10 season. He has been pouring it on lately. Do you think he will hit 60 goals?

Bradshaw predicts:

Ovechkin gets his 54th goal of the season in a 5-3 win over the NY Islanders. Looks like Ovie will be the only player this year to pot 50 or more this year.

Bradshaw predicts:

Well, with about 15 games left, it looks like Ovechkin won't hit 70 goals this year, but he looks to be a shoe-in for the Rocket Richard Trophy for a 2nd straight year.

Bradshaw predicts:

I'm projecting 70 goals this year unless Ovechkin becomes injured. He started with a great pre-season, popping in 5 goals in 4 games, which means he's scoring at a 1.25 goals per game clip. Obviously, the pre-season is just the preseason, but Ovechkin looks like he's ready to go.

So, How Many Goals Does Ovechkin Have This Year?

Ovechkin Goal Scoring Projection For 2011-12

25 games in, Ovechkin has just 8 goals. If projected over his remaining 59 games, that would mean about 30 goals. That would be an incredibly disappointing result after all the goals he has put together in his career so far. It would also be his lowest total for goals during the regular season and that includes last year's woeful 32 goal campaign.

He needs to crank up his game: He has had only one goal and 4 assists for 5 points in his last 11 games so he needs to start showing the form he had a couple of seasons ago. Maybe with a new coach (Dale Hunter) to go along with his new deal with hockey equipment maker Bauer Ovi will start showing a little more spark.

What Do You Think? Will Ovechkin Repeat This Year?

Who do you think will knock Ovechkin out of the top of the NHL scoring ranks?

Crosby? No way. Marleau? Maybe, but I think Ovechkin is going to bury all other goalscorers this year. He's a human highlight reel! Right now he is leading the goal scoring race by a slim one goal lead over Patrick Marleau of the San Jose Sharks, with Sidney Croaby right on their heels.

I agree. I love watching Crosby play because he is just so good, but I think he pales in comparison to Ovechkin.

Too many focus way to much attention on Crosby like he is the second coming, but Ovechkin is a way better player.

Ovechkin was off to a good start but this injury could throw him off.
