Alexandra Pelosi: The Acorn From The Mighty Oak

Alexandra Pelosi is an HBO documentary artist, a political journalist and the daughter of Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House. She is the daughter of the most powerful woman in American politics, and while not directly in politics she has created her own following and place of power. I first heard of her when she appeared on the Rachel Maddow Show.

As someone who is working on a documentary I am fascinated by people who have actually done some that have been shown on TV. Hers appear on HBO and cover both politics and religion.

She is the daughter of the most powerful woman ever in American politics. She is the daughter of a woman who is a lightning rod for controversy. As I read her book and watched the docos I looked for signs of the mother/daughter dynamic in this interesting duo.

Three reasons to love Alexandra Pelosi

1. Alexandra Pelosi has given us an up close and personal view of political campaigning. Her documentary on the 2000 Bush campaign shows us the light side the the grueling months before elections. Her book on the media and campaigning written while on the Kerry campaign in 2004 give us insights into just how the media does affect the campaigns and candidates.

2. Her documentaries about politics and religion, the two things that people aren't supposed to talk about in polite society are well balanced and informative.

3. She is a daughter of political powerhouse Nancy Pelosi, who has followed in her mother's foot steps, but not stayed in her mother's shadow. She has branched out on her own while insisting on having a life. She is a documentarian, an author, a wife and the mother of two, not in order of importance.

Alexandra Pelosi at a Glance

Alexandra C. Pelosi (born on October 5, 1970 in San Francisco, California)California Birth Index is a journalist, documentary filmmaker, and writer based in New York City. She is the daughter of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

In 2000, Pelosi worked as a network television producer for NBC covering George W. Bush's presidential campaign. She brought along a handheld camcorder documenting 18 months of her experience on the campaign trail; the footage was used to create Journeys with George, a documentary that earned her six Emmy nominations.

After spending a decade at NBC News, she left networ...

Journeys With George

This is a fun little movie with a side of George Bush that you have never seen and I wouldn't have imagined. Alexandra Pelosi was on the press bus with George W. Bush during his first presidential campaign. Her job was to write stories, but she also took a camcorder. She filmed the press core, she filmed Bush and she filmed them interacting. Bush was not President, had no image to protect and no one to protect him.

Of course, you must remember that there is no documentary that doesn't have a point of view. They all use about 10% (and that may be high) of the film they take, so what you see is what makes a point.

However, this film could be enjoyed by Bush supporters and Bush detractors equally, although each group will come away with something different.

Its also an opportunity to learn something about what goes on during those long campaigns....

Sneaking into the Flying Circus

This is a fascinating and well crafted book about the 2004 Democratic primaries and John Kerry's race. However, the insights apply to all modern campaigns. At first it seemed a little gosspiy and 'New Yorker looking and the world' for me, but as the book continues it develops into an informative and important view of how the media influences our campaigns. And it isn't what you may have thought. This isn't about whether the media is liberal or conservative, but just how its presence affects the process. I wish I had read it before this last presidential campaign.

Don't get me wrong, I liked the gossipy part. Well, sometimes I was skeptical or annoyed. She described the very beginning when the candidates, when those might one day fly Air Force One, have to fly commercial, walking through security with their shoes in their hands just like everyone else. She did give one example of things happening to one man on one day, that was really sad. I have never seen any of those things anywhere, so I was a bit skeptical, it was dramatic, but for a few pages I started doubting what she said. That didn't last long.

Friends of God: A Road Trip With Alexandra Pelosi

Pelosi travels the south interviewing members of the religious right. As is her style, she lets them speak for themselves. While this is not my kind of Christianity, she does this movie in a way that keeps her opinions pretty much out of the picture. I think I have a tendency to project what I think she would think onto the movie, but a careful watching shows that she really doesn't put her ideas into it. You do see her in it, but she is very light handed.

One of her subjects here is the evangelist Ted Haggard who later had a homosexual crisis. Pelosi later does a documentary on him.

Conservatives on Alexandra Pelosi's Work

Conservatives may not agree with Pelosi's politics, but some applaud her efforts.

"Conservatives have a point of view, but they've been turned into cartoon characters by the mainstream media," says Republican Party strategist Cheri Jacobus of Capitol Strategies. "The mainstream media doesn't acknowledge them or portrays right-of-center folks as abnormal. It's been a problem and will be a problem for some time."

Alexandra Pelosi on the Right

Pelosi appears anxious about how Right America might be perceived. "I tried to be balanced; I don't want to stir the pot. But this is a country at war with itself. It's not cute or funny. It's serious."

My Bio

Squidoo Lens of the Day!

For Arrowsmith Printing 9/22/08

I was born into a small business, I believe that small business and entrepreneurs are the backbone of America and what has made us great. They are what made us great and will save us in these unsure times. I have never wanted to have a great job. Well, better a great one, than a boring dead end one, and I have had both. But I have never really wanted a job at all.

Don't get me wrong, I am a hard worker. I have worked a full-time job, a part time job and a private practice all at the same time for a lot of years in my past. It isn't the work, its the working for someone else. Never wanted to do that, and I don't understand those who want to do that.

When I was six months old my parents bought their first small town weekly newspaper in Iowa. This was back in the day, back when small town newspapers were not just advertising sheets. Perhaps there are still some of them that are real, I hope so.

So I came by this perverse nature naturally. My path to self employment has been different than theirs, but it has always been my path, my direction.

Growing up in Iowa, in the fifties, I also grew up politically conservative. By the time I was 30 I was radically left. Today? I am proudly liberal and what that means will be clearer as we progress.

However, I have had conflicts about 'taking advantage of people'. I now know that employing people is not automatically taking advantage of them, but it took a while for me to learn that nothing is intrinsically good or bad. Well, almost nothing.

I have educated myself in business, I have a small business and I have used EFT and other energy clearing methods to help me clarify the old conflicts and move forward.

My mission here is to provide a forum for people who want to work independently through one person businesses or through employing others and for whom the betterment of human kind is an important value. My lenses are about offering good products, teaching people about betting their lives, and using the money they make for their pleasure and the benefit of others.

That is how I see business and if you have a similar vision I invite you to my blog www.creatingbusinessenergy.com
