Alex De Campi's Highly Original Short Films and Graphic Novels

Here's a few of the extremely creative music videos and indie film shorts directed by American-born British alien Alex de Campi, who "believes that the pen is mightier than the sword (and much easier to get through airport security)."

Her video for Thomas Truax's "Why Dogs Howl at the Moon" (see below) was nominated for best video of 2007 by is this music? magazine.

UPDATE Nov '10: Alex de Campi is an innovator, and has been doing graphic novels and comics for several years. Now she's pushing the new publishing frontier by releasing her Valentine graphic novel / serial on multiple platforms at once, from Kindle to iPhone. However, this page is mostly a fun showcase of some of her work as an independent film director.

Bald summary: "In a futuristic London run by a government both morally and financially bankrupt, ex-soldier Rupert Cain signed his own deal with the devil. He works for the government as an assassin, in exchange for his girlfriend and her father being kept safe from harm. But when the father is murdered anyway, Cain has to pick up the pieces of his shattered life and cope with everything he walked away from three years ago. Where Does She Lurk?

I first met Alex back in 1979, when she was already on the way to becoming a good writer. (I seem to recall her packing a pretty good punch with a wooden sword, too.) She was vividly creative, smart, and marched to a different kettle of fish. From what I can see, that hasn't changed.

And now for something completely different, to quote Monty Python (which I happen to know Alex watched at a young age -- this may explain a few things).

Alex also co-writes comics and books for children and teens. She has even co-written some graphic novels in French, but the US Amazon doesn't have them, presumably on the assumption that Alex is the only American on the planet to have successfully learned French.

That is a fabulous quote, my dear, that he "believes that the pen is mightier than the sword (and much easier to get through airport security)."

Alex de Campi was writing incredible fantasy stories and drawing great adventures when she was 9 years old. I remember them. Heck, I can still quote part of a poem she wrote at that age. I won't embarrass her or break copyright by quoting it here; all I can say is: she was talented then, and she grew up to become a writer an artist with a lively imagination, a sense of style I envied and envy. She has channeled it into these amazing graphic novels.

Okay, so I'm biased. But I'm buying this as a Christmas gift for a few folks.
