African Grey Parrot with Cognitive Skills of a 7 Yr Old
I have been a longtime fan of the research being conducted by Dr. Irene Pepperberg. Not only has her research been important on animal intelligence but it has given new hope for learning challenged individuals. Alex has passed away after 28 years of working with Dr. Pepperberg's research teams. He will surely be missed.
There are a number of other African Grey parrots being worked with using the same training and research model. Alex's legacy will carry on. In order to understand Alex's level of intelligence be sure to watch 1 or 2 of the videos below.

Before Pepperberg's work with Alex, it was widely believed in the scientific community that a large primate brain was needed to handle complex problems related to language and understanding and that birds were not intelligent and could only use words by mimicking.
