Who is Alfred Jarry

Ranked #17,964 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #790,694 overall

Merde!

In case you don't know him, Alfred Jarry was a wonderfully insane (and tiny) French playwright in the late nineteenth- early twentieth century. He pushed the boundaries of what was "proper" in theater by having his characters use profanity onstage.

Jarry was also a philosopher, and he was the father of the pataphysical movement. More on that later. Right now, let's watch some videos!

Three reasons to love Alfred Jarry

Alfred Jarry had an incredible drinking problem-- did you know he consumed up to a pint of wood-grain alcohol per day? That's right!

Alfred Jarry scandalized the French theater with his best-known work "Pere Ubu," mostly because the first word was "Merde!"

Alfred Jarry died of tuberculosis (aggravated by his alcoholism and complete disregard for his health), and his last request was said to have been for a toothpick.

Get some Jarry: seriously, it's really good.
