In 1952, the United States Air Force first coined the term "UFO" - Unidentified Flying Object - but UFOs, or the belief in them and the extra-terrestrials that "pilot" them, has been here long before then.
Indeed, there are many who claim that there are numerous references to paranormal manifestations in Ancient Greek myths and in The Old Testament of the Bible that could easily be construed as eye witness accounts of UFOs and/or accounts of human interaction with aliens.
N.B.: Others contend that these same stories originated from dealings with the highly technologically advanced people / beings fleeing from destruction of the continent of Atlantis, which sank into the sea - guessed to be in the mid-Atlantic - thousands of years ago.
These Atlanteans are said to have fled to the corners of the globe and their advanced technological abilities resulted in the surprising similarities of many Creationist stories from ancient advanced civilizations. [I shall be creating a lens on this subject later in 2010).

The First Flying Saucer?
While it is generally accepted that this incident (which resulted in the loss of six lives) was caused by "a lost weather balloon and exacerbated by stray flares and shell bursts from adjoining batteries", there are those who contend that (allegedly) official correspondence between U.S. Army Chief of Staff, General George C. Marshall during the war and President Franklin D. Roosevelt, proves otherwise.

Whether this incident did or did not happen and whether these documents were kept Top Secret is immaterial, as "flying saucers" (as they were first referred to) were to become a global phenomenon just a few years later.

"On June 24th, Tuesday, 1947...I flew directly toward Mt. Rainier after reaching an altitude of about 9,500 feet...There was a DC-4 [an airplane of the time] to the left and to the rear of me approximately 15 miles distance...at 14,000 foot elevation...
...I hadn't flown more than 2 or 3 minutes on my course when a bright flash reflected on my airplane...[&] I observed a chain of 9 peculiar looking aircraft flying from north to south at approximately 9,500 foot elevation...
...What kept bothering me as I watched them flip and flash in the sun right along their path was the fact that I couldn't make out any tail on them..."

What Exactly Happened At Roswell?
did they really find aliens?
Whether you're a believer of a UFO-skeptic, there's no doubt that Roswell is a frequently-referenced part of popular culture. These days, the City of Roswell attracts about 50,000 revelers - doubling the town's population for a few days over the July 4 holiday - to the Roswell UFO Festival every year, celebrating all things UFO.There's no doubt, then, that Roswell - as both a phenomenon and a city revenue-earner, is definitely here to stay.
The story goes that some time around late June - early July 1947, an alien craft crashed near Roswell Army Air Field (Area 51 is a nearby Top Secret military base where other UFO shenanigans are believed to have taken place). The army then inexplicably provided a press release stating exactly that, causing, understandably, a media sensation.
"The many rumors regarding the flying disk became a reality yesterday when the intelligence office of the 509th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force, Roswell Army Air Field, was fortunate enough to gain possession of a disk [UFO] through the cooperation of one of the local ranchers and the sheriff's office of Chaves County."

The next day, that release was retracted and it was replaced by the story that a radar hot air balloon had crashed, instead and that would have been the end of the Roswell story, except that a number of factors didn't add up.
Over the years, Roswell researchers have uncovered numerous "eyewitnesses" of UFO activity both a few days before and on the night of the crash, plus several government cover-ups. Many of these are documented briefly but quite thoroughly at www.unexplainable.net
The story that Roswell-believers uphold is that a flying saucer crashed with between four to eight humanoid aliens, one of which was still partially alive when the crash occurred but subsequently died.

- I'm intriguedby the numerous credible witnesses (who don't appear to be nutjobs) who tell a very similar story about the events in Roswell. I also think it very unlikely that somewhere in the vast universe there aren't other planets with intelligent life. It is both frightening and fascinating to speculate. I wonder if the truth will ever be fully released.

- I believe that the Roswell event did occur as the witnesses stated. It was all the military could do to quiet all parties involved. Its the Governments belief that society simply could not handle the release of this information. In some respects I agree that it would change the world as we know it, the medical advances alone would be incredible. Area 51 was at some point used for back engineering most likely. Its probably one of many places the government goes, when it wants to be alone.At some point, the facts will come out, and we will all have alot to think about

It appears that a small niche publishing industry has grown up recently for fundamentalist Christians to address the problems of:"Can a Christian believe in aliens?"
The answer for these apocalyptic Christians seems to be:
"Yes you should and you should be very, very scared!"
Apocalyptic Christianity & Aliens
can Jesus save us from aliens?
These Evangelical Christians believe that from the beginning of time, Satan has been trying to corrupt the Human race, initially, so that Jesus would - in any human incarnation - have to be born part-demonic.
However, having been defeated on that score, Apocalyptic Christians now believe that Lucifer is trying to use aliens - perhaps technologically superior to Man but spiritually inferior because we are made in God's image and they aren't - to abduct and impregnate some of the many attractive women that we hear of, who suddenly go "missing".
These aliens are keeping them in suspended animation on their ships as mere incubators, then cruelly discarding or killing these unlucky souls and raising the Demon-spawn in outer space that will return as army of Fallen Angels to wreak a demonic vengeance upon God's children.
However, what these demonic half-breed freaks don't understand is that in times of trouble, Christians can call on the Lord to intervene and he will, citing such Gospel passages such as:
"And He (Jesus) said, 'The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.'" (Lk. 18:27)
In other words, our guy in the sky will trump little green men any day!
