Who is Aliester Crowley

Ranked #14,185 in Culture & Society, #286,011 overall

Understanding the Beast?

A very controversial figure for many years, Aliester Crowley has perhaps only relatively recently begun to claim his rightful place among occult authors and practising occultists of every kind.

Much of what he wrote and said, as with some of his behaviour, has in the past been misunderstood and it is difficult to always discern when he has his tongue firmly in his cheek.

Rarely a writer to take at face value, his books are more suited to reading by those experienced in Magickal Arts.

Three reasons to love Aliester Crowley

... hmmm, let's see ...

Where to begin ...

1. He brought us a wealth of information which might otherwise have remained secret.

2. He gave us the fabulous Book of Thoth Tarot deck - my favourite deck in case you hadn't guessed.

3. He still keeps us entertained with his writings years after his death.

The Moonchild

... a novel which may surprise its readers

Have you read The Moonchild by Aliester Crowley?

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in Crowley in any of his aspects. It gives a fascinating insight.

If you haven't read it then give it a try. It can stand alone as a work of fiction but I hope your copy will have all the explanatory footnotes which let you in on another aspect of the book.

The Crowley Thoth Tarot

... stunning works of art with deep layers of symbolism

The Book of Thoth.

This collaboration with Lady Frieda Harris is probably Crowley's most widely known work. Painted by Frieda Harris to Aliester Crowley's design, it was originally envisaged that the work would take a few months but as the decision was taken to redesign not only the Major Arcana but the Minor as well, the period of work extended from montha to years. Five years in total, between 1938 and 1943.

The deck encompasses science, mathematics, philosphy and anthropology alongside the magic of Crowley. Like the Rider-Waite deck, this Tarot is based on the teachings of the Golden Dawn.

As can be seen in the illustration below, the deck is available in more than one size. The largest I find too big to handle comfortable but excellent for meditation, the medium sized deck is perfect for readings, the smallest size is a perfect "handbag" Tarot.

The largest, at 3.75 by 5.5 inches, is far too large for me to handle for a reading but excellent for meditation, the mid size, 2.75 by 4.25 inches, is comfotable to handle even for my small hands and is good for readings, the smallest, a true 'handbag' size at just 2.25 by 3.5 inches, is just wonderful for laying out on the Map of the Tarot.

Magick in Theory and Practice

... one of Crowley's most accessible works

In his introduction to Magick in Theory and Practice, Crowley states that the book is for every man, woman and child and bemoans the fact that his previous work has been misunderstood and limited in scope by his use of technical terms.

He complains that his previous work attracted too many who sought only an escape from reality. He strives in this book to make Magick accessible to all and to demystify the subject.

Crowley defines Magick as the Science and Art of causing Change to occur in conformity with Will.

The book is over 400 pages long and requires reading with an open mind. It give a fascinating insight into Crowley's work, world and beliefs.

His definition of magic played a big role in my development. He's such a gangsta.

Love him or hate him, Aleister Crowley led where others follow - a great lens about a fascinating man :)

Blessed by a Squid Angel (not sure he'd approve of the title though!) ;)

An interesting man. Haven't read about him for many years but remember that he stated, "Do what thou wilt is the whole of the law" or something to that effect. I must read more about him. Great lens.

    Hello,
I am involved in a mystery school and do believe that Crowley has been misunderstood. Your lens is absolutely beautiful and a delight to experience.

Great lens, Giant-Squid-soon-to-be! Angeles Arrien wrote an incredible book based on Crowley's tarot deck. It'd be a great resource for your readers.
