A lot of people new to the Alkaline diet get confused by what the terms acid and alkaline foods mean.

On the Alkaline diet, when a food is referred to as being acid or alkaline, it does not refer to the properties of the food as such, but rather to the base qualities of the food once it has been digested. So, a food would be considered acidid if it leaves an acid ash in the body, and a food would be considered alkaline if it leaves an alkaline ash in the body.

On the Alkaline diet, the ration that should be strived for is recommended as 80% alkalizing foods and 20% acidifying foods to keep a healthy balance.

Often when people are just starting out on the diet, they make the mistake of leaning too much to either the alkaline side in consuming too much alkalizing food, or vice versa.

It is important to remember that a healthy body needs both alkalizing and acidifying foods - but in the recommended proportions. A body that is too alkaline or too acidic will result in a detrimental effect on your health.
