Alpacas Facts and Information

Why, Oh Why, Do We Have Alpacas?

This has been my question. We bought three alpaca males a few months ago. We have a small farm that consists of a pony, two miniature horses, two sheep, eight bantam chickens, two cats, a dog and now three alpacas. I've put this lens together to convince myself that getting this small herd will be beneficial in the long run. Yes, they are cute, but can we make any money? Can we break even on our investment? Maybe, maybe not.

What Can We Do With These Guys?

Alpaca fleece is one of the warmest, most durable fibers. Alpaca fleece contains no oil or lanolin like sheep wool and is therefore hypo-allergenic. We have the option of selling the fiber as is after shearing, or carding, spinning into yarn, or even making items with the yarn. It all depends on the time we want to invest and the effort we want to put into our final product.

My daughter works with fiber: spinning, dyeing, knitting, crocheting. We bought these guys so that she can expand her knowledge of the fiber arts. We will need to buy shears or hire someone to shear them. The veterinarian came today and checked them over and gave them vaccines. They need to have their teeth trimmed and toenails trimmed.

We don't have a spinning wheel as my daughter spins on a hand spindle that she made herself. I'm sure that we'll be investing in a spinning wheel in the near future as well as tools for carding the fiber, dyeing the fiber, and miscellaneous new crocheting and knitting needles. I can see where all this is headed.

Alpaca Care...Clipping Toenails

I think we will need to learn how to clip the nails on our alpacas. Can't be too hard, right? Our guys don't seem to be as tame as the one in this video. It may be harder than I think.

Keep Them Cool

We learned the hard way the need to keep alpacas cool during the summer months. We lost Twister (photo above) from the Kansas heat in the summer of 2011. We've since learned the best way to keep alpacas cool during the summer is to provide them with wet sand or dirt to lie down in. You can also spray water on their undersides only. Getting them wet on the top during a hot day actually increases the temperature close to the body as the wet fiber traps heat in. We will dearly miss him and his toothy smile.

What can You Do With the Fleece?

I'm finding that you can do a lot of things with the fleece; sell it as is, spin it to sell as yarn, make it into socks, sweaters, rugs, etc.

Help Me Decide!

OK. Give it to me straight. Was this a good idea? What are the pros and cons of owning an alpaca?

Investing in Alpacas...a good idea?

No, you'll never get back what you have invested.

Yes, because they are so cute. Who could resist those big brown eyes.

Tipi says:

Very cute, I would invest in some if I had a place for them.

I don't know but they are cute!

The return on your investment will be the joy of having these remarkable animals.

If you board other animals for people at full board price, it will pay for their keep... AND, you can enjoy their cuteness too!

Great lens! I'm thinking about getting alpacas too. They are so beautiful and every one of them has their own unique personality. Don't forget that you can breed them, board them, milk them, sheer them, show them and give tours and educational classes on raising them. There are many ways to make money and earn back what you spend. I own and board horses, goats, chickens, turkeys and dogs, which means that at the end of the month, it is a wash. If my husband lost his job today, the animals wouldn't have to go because they pay for themselves.

WOW...I never realized how big the toe nails of an Alpaca are. They are cute and I hope you do realize a profit from all the time and money you have put into these animals. If not on the alpaca themselves, perhaps you will gain an income from this Squidoo lens!
