The Way of the Inukshuks: A Journey Along Georgian Bay

A few years ago, we took a road trip in Canada along Georgian Bay, the in Ontario, Canada. Highway 17 runs east and west along the north shore. That is where we saw our first Inukshuk. I was inspired. You would be too! Here's a picture of me and the Inukshuk I made after we returned home.

This lens includes the Wikipedia definition of an Inukshuk and a video explaining what an Inukshuk is. I've included a map of Highway 17 in Ontario, so you can see the route we took on our drive from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario to Sudsbury, Ontario.

We like to go rock collecting, so it was natural for us to find the rocks stacked along side the road intriguing. After all, we were on our say to Sudsbury to visit a nickle min and the Inukshuks were our guides all along the way.

There's a video of the Big Nickle Mine, Sudsbury, Ontario so you can see one of the fun places to visit when you make the trip.

Farther down the page, you'll see a video of the North Channel, Gregorian Bay, Ontario, Canada. That's the shoreline you'll follow as you travel Highway 17, what we affectionately call the "Way of the Inukshuks."

I've also included a map of the section of Highway 17, that runs from Thessalon to Espanola one of the prettiest drives we've ever taken. That's Indian Country, but don't let that fool you. Every now and then you'll find a Tim Horton's along the trail!

Be sure to take a look at the list of Inukshuk and Georgian Bay items from Amazon too. Those links include books, pictures, and jewelry, all the kinds of things you need to celebrate the Inukshuk, a symbol of the Winter 2010 Olympics.

Finally, you'll see I've included the video How to Make an Inukshuk, so you can build your own, like we did.

Remember to sign the guest book and let me know if you've made the trip or what you think of Inukshuks, Georgian Bay, or the Big Nickle Mine in Sudsbury!

What Wikipedia has to say about Inukshuks: Tool of First Nations

An inuksuk (plural inuksuit) (from the Inuktitut: ?????, plural ??????; alternatively inukshuk in English or inukhuk in Inuinnaqtun) is a stone landmark or cairn built by humans, used by the Inuit, Inupiat, Kalaallit, Yupik, and other peoples of the Arctic region of North America. These structures are found from Alaska to Greenland. This region, above the Arctic Circle, is dominated by the tundra biome, containing areas with few natural landmarks.

The inuksuk may have been used for navigation, as a point of reference, a marker for hunting grounds, or as a food cache.Inuksuit - Signposts of the North The Inupiat in northern Alaska used inuksuit to assist in the herding of caribou into contained areas for slaughter.28 Ethnobiology Conference Abstracts Inuksuit vary in shape and size, with deep roots in the Inuit culture.

Historically the most common type of inuksuit is a single stone positioned in an upright manner. An inuksuk is often confused with an inunnguaq, a cairn representing a human figure. There is some debate as to whether the appearance of human or cross shaped cairns developed in the Inuit culture before the arrival of European missionaries and explorers.[http://yennadon.sd42.ca/cyberschool/cyberdaysarchive2/logo/nationalpost.html Inukshuk replacing the maple leaf Canada's new symbol leads us ... somewhere]
