Why Sit-ups Are Hazardous to a Tone Stomach

The formula for creating a tone stomach might surprise you because it is counter-intuitive. If you go to any gym and watch people do sit ups and observe them week after week, there will be very few of them that ever reduce the stomach.

Why Sit-ups Are Hazardous to a Tone Stomach By Eric Berg DC

After evaluating over tens of thousands I am convinced that sit-ups actually worsen the stomach and the back muscles. This has to do with a hidden, not widely known insidious hormone called cortisol. This is the stress hormone and one of its big purposes is to flood the surrounding organs in your stomach with adipose tissue or what is called visceral fat.

Logically, you may think that weak stomach muscles need to be tone by sit up exercises, but this hidden cortisol will prevent any reduction of fat in the midsection. The way to solve this is to understand what the body is trying to do when cortisol is elevated and how to counter it.
The reason why cortisol gets triggered is through "stress". This could be a combination of lack of sleep and long term constant stress, pushing yourself for years.

The first thing to do is adjust your workouts to the only exercises that reduce cortisol, which is yogo and walking. But make sure you do not walk on the treadmill as getting outside and walking in a natural environment is 100% more effective. A treadmill is unnatural.
The second most important thing to do is ensure you sleep 7 hours. This might mean getting to sleep an hour earlier and consuming 4 stalks of celery before bed - celery has a chemical that reduces cortisol.

The third thing to do is adjust your breaths down to 5 breaths per minute but this takes a bit of practice. Why 5 breaths? Because this is the timing that will produce the most relaxation in your nervous system. If you breathe in for 6 seconds and breathe out for 6 seconds through your stomach, you will find that within 5-10 minutes, your entire body will let go and be very calm. I like to do this before bed. Use a clock or use the free breathing mechanism on my website called Synchronized Breathing Technology, anti-stress software at drberg.com

The last point I want to make about doing sit-ups is how it destroys the back. Muscles are made to flex and extend. Sit-ups are only a flexion move and over time your back will be out of balanced to the point of creating instability with your discs.
