Sister Wendy Taught Me All I Know About Art
Ranked #8,951 in Arts & Design, #158,932 overall
Who's Sister Wendy?
Sister Wendy is the lovable nun and art critic, who became one of the most unlikely celebrities of the 1990s. Her instructional programs on BBC featured her critiques of famous paintings. Eventually a multi-part documentary was made of the "Grand Tour" in which she visited the great art museums of Europe. These were shown on PBS in the United States. Sister Wendy followed up her European tour with a tour six of America's art museums.
I learned a lot from Sister Wendy's art documentaries. She really knows her stuff, and the passion she feels for art is contagious. Never fear that this nun's art lectures will feature only religious art and icons. Sister Wendy's tours of instruction are all inclusive, and she's not reticent in explaining the more erotic aspects of famous paintings she showcases. Her enthusiasm and understanding of the historic, mythical and psychological aspects of art are inspiring
You can't help but love Sister Wendy. With the habit and wimple, all you see are big glasses and that endearing rabbit-toothed smile. Sister Wendy reminds you of your favorite teacher--the one who was so sweet that you always did your best, just to make her happy. If you don't know much about art, or even if you do, you owe it to yourself to take the grand tour with Sister Wendy

Sister Wendy's "The Story Of Painting"
Photo:news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/50446000/jpg/_50446929_wendyposter.jpg
Sister Wendy takes on the history of Western art, from the cave paintings of Lascaux to the tormented art of Van Gogh. She's up to the task as, with her usual eagerness she notices the small details and points out their importance to our understanding. She teaches us about artistic technique, symbolism, and factors that may have influenced the artist, things that we'd never have noticed on our own, that increase our enjoyment of each work of art.
One of Sister Wendy's endearing qualities is that she does it without using technical language that we don't understand. She doesn't talk down to us from her lofty perch of knowledge, but lifts us up to her level of appreciation, by explaining art in words that resonate with us.
Sister Wendy's Grand Tour
Here, Sister Wendy takes us along on her guided grand tour of the great art museums of Europe. , Sister Wendy's passion for art, her amazing knowledge and her sheer joy in art's beauty and power to inspire are infectious. You can't help but feel it too.
In addition to inspiring works of art, we're treated to sublime views of the European cities that are home to these great museums, and some of the sites that inspired the paintings. Still, Sister Wendy's wisdom and her charming way of imparting it to us with each work of art she introduces are almost as entertaining as the subject.

I love learning about art and art appreciation. I took a couple classes in college on it even though I'm not an artist -- and it didn't even satisfy any credit requirements!!

Not enough to be a critic but I do enjoy every moment when there. I like to paint, draw, crochet and collect some costume jewelry....I have found it is color that attracts me. God gave us so much to see and study.

- Oh, I think Mary Walsh (on our Canadian comedy show 'This Hour Has 22 Minutes') used to do a spoof about Sister Wendy. I thought the character was made up, but I see now that she is based on a real nun. How endearing she is . . thanks for sharing. Sincerely, Rose

- As you describe her, sister Wendy is a very charismatic teacher, one that makes the "pupil" fall in love with the lesson she teaches. The person who has such teachers is very fortunate .
Sister Wendy is also a Christian who breaks the myth of the rigid religious practice. Each person has his own talents and features and it is very important to make them flourish and transmit them to others.
Congratulations again for your thematology and hard work.
