Celebrate St. Patrick's Day

A Day for All Things Irish

St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17. It is a day celebrated around the world, with the wearing of green, Irish food, and Irish music. My family has an Irish background and this is one that is never forgotten around our house. It's a day for green beer, corned beef and cabbage, and music that reminds you of Ireland and all it has to offer. I hope to share a bit of that with you on this lens.

My Favorite Irishman

My Favorite IrishmanI don't know anyone more proud of his Irish heritage than my brother. He lives and breathes it. We had a great opportunity a few years back to take a European cruise and got to spend a day in Dublin. It was a highlight of the trip. One day, I hope we will get to go back and just wander around the countryside.

Here's my brother in his kilt. A handsome devil, no?

Irish Philosophy

I'm not sure who wrote this, but it has always given me a chuckle.

There are only two things to worry about
Either you are sick or you are well
If you are well, then there is nothing to worry about
If you are sick, there are two things to worry about
Either you will get well, or you will die
If you get well, there is nothing to worry about.
If you die, there are two things to worry about
Either you will go to Heaven or you will go to Hell
If you go to Heaven, there is nothing to worry about
But if you go to Hell, you will be so busy shaking hands with your friends,
You won't have time to worry!

Say You're Irish with a Tattoo

Irish Tattoo

My brother always wanted a tattoo. I think the only thing that kept him from getting one earlier in life was that our mother really didn't approve, so he just never did it. A couple of years ago, he decided it was time. He now has a fine looking tattoo that is uniquely his. As you may see here, he didn't just go for a small tattoo, no it goes all the way around his arm. The three-leaf shamrock, by Irish folklore, signifies the Trinity. The top of the tattoo shows the family crest, which is the forearm with the dagger, which comes from the Coat of Arms. The signatures on the clover are from each of his five children, in their own handwriting. The Celtic chain that goes all the way around his arm was actually drawn by his daughter just for his tattoo. It has five bands in it, one for each of his children, and flows without stopping. The significance of crossing the lines is that each time the line is crossed it brings more luck to the bearer. And yes, with his five children, he is a lucky man!

What's on Your Dinner Table for St. Patrick's Day?

One of the things that happens on St. Patrick's Day is a celebration with Irish recipes and food. It's not all about green beer, in fact, there are some great Irish dishes to try. How about trying some Irish stew? Or making some Irish soda bread? It's all up to you and you can find recipes here!

The Best Irish Song Around

No St. Patrick's Day celebration would be complete without hearing "Danny Boy." One of my favorite groups is Celtic Woman. They do some amazing music. Here you can hear their rendition of this famous Irish song. Enjoy!

Being Irish is a Family Affair

A Family Affair

St. Patrick's Day is the day you will find the "boys" of my family all decked out in their kilts and ready to go celebrate the day. They are proud of their Irish heritage and celebrate in style. Here, the McNally clan is ready to head out in search of some Irish stew and green beer. They will, I promise, be the talk of the party.

A Celebration not Only in Ireland

White House on St. Patrick's DaySt. Patrick's Day is celebrated all over the world. In 2009, the fountain at the White House turned green in honor of the day. In Chicago, the Chicago River is dyed green for the celebration. Everywhere, people don a bit of green to show they recognize the day; and if you don't wear green, look out because someone will surely pinch you!

Even children get into the festivities by baking shamrock-shaped cookies with green icing. Families gather to have a meal of corned beef and cabbage or Irish stew. And of course, the Irish whiskey and green beer flow freely.

Here's to the Irish in you!

Thanks so much for stopping by. Do leave a comment and tell me how you will celebrate the day. Until then, I will leave you with this Irish blessing:
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

I've always liked that Irish Blessing. I think your brother's tattoo is very meaningful, and I'm not a great fan of tattoos. His is a family affair, and that's neat.
