What are retired beanie babies?

Retired beanie babies are born after the retirement of a Beanie Baby or a product from any line of Ty Inc., the manufacturer of Beanie Babies and other lines of collectibles, is its withdrawal from production. This has occurred in varying amounts of time following its introduction, depending on Ty's goals for that particular item. Some Beanie Babies have remained in production for several years following their introduction. Others have become retired beanie babies just days after being introduced. Occasionally, beanies that have been introduced for a single purpose have been retired on the day they have been distributed. More rarely, some beanies have had their production canceled prior to their shipment to retailers, but following their announcement to the public, thereby never becoming available.

The most expensive retired beanie baby

The most expensive Retired Beanie Baby ever, though, is the royal blue Peanut. This elephant was originally intended to be a light blue, but a production error rendering the doll in a much darker shade made a very small number of Peanut dolls very valuable indeed. Since the incorrectly colored dolls were created in 1995, two more runs of royal blue Peanuts have been produced-one in 1998 and one in 2000 as part of McDonald's Teenie Beanies "Legends" collection. That didn't keep an original from being sold at auction for $3,005 in 2000, though. This may have been quite a bargain, as the most expensive beanie baby has been valued at a possible $5,000.

The first retired beanie babies

Beanie Babies became especially popular and valuable when TY started retiring certain designs. Splash the Orca Whale and Flash the Dolphin were the first Beanie Babies to retire in May 1997. The rest of the original 9 Beanie Babies followed suit and quickly became some of the most expensive Beanie Babies on the market.
