All Star Moving & Storage: A Reivew

This lens will be my review of All Star Moving & Storage, located at 501 Penhorn av suite #5 Secaucus NJ 07094. I write this article in the hopes that the page will rank high enough on search engines to be found, and to provide a warning to the people that are in need of a decent moving company. I encourage you to read on if you are considering using this company to move your possessions.

Unfortunately, All Star Moving & Storage was the first moving company that I have ever used, and I must say that my experience with them has been far from pleasurable. From paying 150% percent of what I was quoted, to the lack of professionalism with the movers themselves, I struggle to find any element of value within this firm.

Why We Used All Star Moving & Storage

Backed Into a Corner

I've moved several times over the years, and usually I was able to find friends and family to help me out. Finding somebody to take a day off of work, or helping out on the weekend has never been difficult for me. Because of this I have never used a moving company before All Star Moving & Storage. On my most recent move, I was moving out of state this time, I was unable to find anybody to take the 10 hour trip to help me move the large furniture.

We had to decide between selling all of our things except trinkets and clothes, and then repurchase furniture when we arrived. Or, to hire a moving company. We decided to get some quotes from companies, and from the quotes that we received, we made the decision to hire a moving company.

I looked over a page of moving company reviews, and didn't see anything too negative about them. We received our quote for $1500, which I thought was a decent price, and we were ready to go.

All Star Moving: The Movers

Not Quite Professional

The day of the move had finally approached, and up to this point we had spoken often with the friendly representative, we'll call her Rosanadana, that provided us the quote. Everything seemed good. We had some paperwork to sign, and we were ready to go. Almost immediately the "head mover" of All Star Moving & Storage,a Romanian chap that we'll call Radu, started complaining about the heat and asked why we didn't have the air conditioner on. I explained that it wasn't on because the door was wide open, and I wasn't going to blast the A/C when the entrance door is open. We had this conversation several times (I'm not kidding about this). He looked over all the things that we had, and the crew began to work.

When all was finished, he says that because we had more than what they expected, that he would give us a deal and only charge us $2200. The problem that I had with this was that I believed that something should have been said beforehand. Unfortunately neither my fiancée, nor myself hold degrees in moving box estimation, and I would expect that he should have have given us a heads up that there would be a dramatic increase in cost. We gave our best estimate with how many boxes that we would have. Something should have been said before they began work.

After everything was done, Radu starts asking for a tip. We gave them some money for the effort, and he just stared at his hand while holding it out. I said that it was what we had to give at the time, and he still was not satisfied with the free money that I gave him. (Considering that I just had to pay and extra $700, I would think that he would be somewhat understanding, but this is the mentality of the entire company from what I gather.) He then said "I'll take it, but do better for the delivery team because the tip is important." This is a direct quote from Radu, and I am not embellishing, or paraphrasing at all.

The Extra Costs

We were stuck since everything was loaded onto the truck, and we were on a pretty tight time schedule. So, we had to pay the extra 50% that All Star Moving & Storage quoted after they had loaded everything onto their truck.

Then, we were told that they would only accept cash, cashier's check, and credit card (with a 6% fee). I'm not kidding, a 6% fee to use a credit card. It was Saturday afternoon, and the banks were closed. I also have a limit on the amount of money that I can withdraw from an ATM. We were not informed about the 6% credit card fee over the phone, and we our initial deposit over the phone with Rosanadana without the fee. So, this extra $60 came as something of a surprise.

After a 5 day wait to finally get our things, the movers arrived at our new apartment. They drove a semi-truck to deliver our things. Not a large moving truck, but an actual semi. Because of this, they couldn't get into our parking lot. Surprising, isn't it? You can't get a semi into an apartment parking lot. Because of this, they had to park the truck in an alley which added another 30 ft to the distance. They then charged an extra $75 for a distance fee.

I confronted the driver of the semi about this, and he a said that he has to charge because it was "an inconvenience for them" to walk the things from the truck to the apartment. I said that if he didn't drive a semi, there would be plenty of room. To which the driver replies "but you didn't ask for a smaller truck." Really? I have to specifically ask them to not drive ridiculously large vehicles to an apartment building? Our things could have been placed in a 14ft truck, just to give you an idea of how big our load was.

I called Rosanadana to see if she could help, but the only response that I received was that my fiancee had signed a waiver when the company picked our things up that said we would pay a $75 fee for any distance that they considered further than reasonable.

The Damage Done

Still Waiting on a Response

Our bookshelf arrived as a bunch of planks of wood. We would not have been aware had I not noticed that it was not in the room. When I said something, the mover said that it was damaged, then he wrote down the damage. Also, our coffee table had a leg that was torn off. I'm not going to take time to insinuate that Radu was upset over his "unsatisfactory tip," and took it out on my furniture. But, the notion is always there.

We're still waiting to hear back about the furniture reimbursement. Though, with the level of professionalism that I dealt with up to this point, I doubt that anything will be done to fix it.

In Summary

STAY AWAY FROM All Star Moving & Storage

We chose to use a moving company because we were in a position where our options were limited. Even if All Star Moving & Storage would have told us beforehand that the cost would be 150% of what we were told, we would not have been given our deposit back. We would have had to tell them two days ahead of time, or lose the $356 deposit that we paid.

I would say that if you need a company to help you move, look at a lot off review sites. After closer inspection All Star Moving & Storage in Secaucus NJ does have its share of unsatisfied customers. The better business bureau gives them a C-. In the world of investment bonds that would be considered junk. The difference being that junk bonds can possibly reward you, whereas All Star Moving & Storage will just continue to take.

Mixed reviews here. Some had the same issues with charging more than quotes, and things damaged and missing. Other said "would recommend." (Can't help but wonder if this is the movers themselves making these comments.)

This is an interesting site that deals with moving scams. I found this after I wrote the article. This is pretty much what happened to us back in August.

i just dealt with this company not to long ago and i wish i never went through them. i was told i was going to pay 2900 from ny to tx...so my husband and i boxed up everything and moved furniture to the movers. so all they had to do was just put the stuff in the truck. after everything was done the guy comes with the remaining balance and it was 6400 i was shocked.. i didnt sign the receipts. i then called tara the rep i was talking to the whole time, she tells me they go by cubic ft when in the estimate they said it goes by pounds and the movers tipped themself a 400 dollar tip like i would really pay them that much for doing their job... im calling better business bureau and i really hope they go out of business for being unprofessional and dishonest

First of all I'm truly sorry to hear your misfortune,as you can see many others have gone through this including myself with this dishonest company. It has been over a year but I'm still saddened by the stuff I have lost. I truly believed Tara, as she seemed sincere and honest, boy I was mistaken.

I hired All Star Moving Services for my move on November 18, 2011 from Jersey City, NJ 07302 to Portland, OR 97215. My representative was Monica, who was very reassuring in the beginning. She said they were not a broker and that their own employees at All-Star moving will be doing my move from start to finish. She said my items will be charged based on weight. I had inquired with multiple moving companies and the first thing I ask if they are brokers and if they charge by weight or cubic feet. I would eliminate brokers and movers who charged by cubic feet. Monica also stated there was no shuttle needed to get to my destination. When I asked her to come perform a walkthrough of my items, she mentioned I didn't need one because of the small area I was moving. I was only moving about one bedroom worth of items since I had already given away all my kitchen items and had already moved my clothes. I took her word for it. She gave me a total moving quote of $2811.50 for 3900 pounds of items. I paid 25% percent of the move on my credit card. She also reassured me the price was based on weight and I would be allowed to follow the movers to the weigh station. Monica also stated I could switch out inventory if I changed my mind. For instance, I no longer had five art frames, but instead I had 3. I switched the two art frames for a little toy horse for my children to make up for the weight. On the day of my move, a man who claimed to be from All Star Moving arrived at my house at 9:00 A.M. without the rest of the moving crew. This mover did not identify his name, so I will refer him to the foreman. He was wearing another moving company's shirt, which I did not remember. He did not give me my rights and responsibilities. The foreman's first statement to me was my quote of $2811.50 is not valid and would cost me $5900 instead. He told me I could pay a ?discounted rate? of $5600. I was shocked because based on Monica's quote, it would not have come out to this much! I rejected any flat rate and told him I wanted to follow him to the weigh station. He forced me to sign paper work because he refused to start the move until I signed all documents. I called Monica about the charges she said that she could no longer help me and that I needed to deal with the foreman directly about any pricing issues. I felt helpless because if my moving representative refused to assist me any further. The foreman started to pack my items. The moving crew did not reach my home until about 9:45 A.M. When I requested for the weight certificate, he said he would give it to me later. The moving crew was unprofessional from the start. The movers were packing my items and I noticed they were laying my flat screen TVs flat on the floor despite me already telling them not to do that. In addition, they wrapped my mirror and TVs in make-shift cardboard scraps and not an appropriate mirror box. They told me I could take my cleaning supplies such as detergent and dishwashing soap, etc. I had two boxes of those as well as left some items outside per his request. He said he wasn't going to put an inventory sticker on them. These items were put on the truck and I was charged for moving them. When the move was completed, I followed the moving truck to the weigh station. The foreman said the truck was 36 feet. They weighed truck with three men on the truck. Then the foreman told me I had to pay $4755 without showing me the weight certificate. When I demanded again to see the weight of the truck, he refused to allow me to see it. He called me names, such as ?cheapskate?. He called Yaniv, who was the owner of All Star Moving. Yaniv got on the phone and yelled at me and repeatedly called me ?stupid? and made threats against me. He told me he was offering me a flat rate of $4755 and did not bother to show me the breakdown of the charges involved, including the weight. I initially refused to pay because they would not show me the weight certificate after the weigh as well as the breakdown of charges. Yaniv and the foreman made me fear for my safety because they kept telling me ?this is not child's play, we're doing your move and you better not mess around with me because I have your stuff and I know where you're moving to?. I realized these men had my destination address so I fearfully paid the remaining balance of $4045 on my credit card. In addition, there was only my husband and I as opposed to the four moving men. We could not protect ourselves. On November 26, 2011, I received a phone call from the mover at my destination in Portland Oregon. He did not introduce himself but his foreman said he was the owner of the subcontracting company, Gogi, LLC. I was shocked because Monica told me they were doing my move from start to finish. The owner called me from a Denver cell phone number of 720-690-1399. He notified me he was delivering my belongings that day. I waited all day until 6:30 PM for him to come. He came to the street next to my house and called me and refused to drive up to my street and told me I had to pay $400 for a shuttle. He did not attempt to even come to my street to even take a look. He demanded cash upfront before he unloaded or else he would sell off our belongings. The next day, the owner came to my house with a 17-foot U-Haul moving truck. Again, he demanded payment upfront . We did not feel comfortable with that so he left with our belongings. He later returned and we agreed to pay him the cash. He performed the move and did not bother to lay down cardboard to prevent mud from coming into my house. All my other movers always did this before their move. He marked off the inventory sheet although there were items missing. I was missing two inventory items. He dropped my leather couch and also damaged the veneers on my bed. They soiled my mattresses and box springs and damaged other items. When I asked about my cleaning supplies he said they threw it away. They charged me for the weight/cubic feet and threw it away without letting me know! They also stole my brand new Tequila Patron bottle which was in the see-through containers. They did not steal the liquors and had left them there. I told the foreman and the owner about the missing and damaged items during the move. When they were finished, I marked my comments in the exceptions section as to what I noticed was missing and damaged. The foreman accused me of making up things that were damaged. When I confronted them about the missing items and the inventory sheet, the movers both left and did not explain anything to me. In the past, I had time to notify the moving company about damage or loss up to nine months after the move. All Star Moving Company's pricing is extremely deceptive. They performed a bait and switch on me: they promised a move based on weight but they ultimately charged me a flat rate against my will. They threatened to keep my belongings if I did not go with their flat rate. They also said they were not brokers and that they were going to move my belongings from start to finish. They harassed and threatened me. They tried to extort me by paying more money or else they would not deliver my items. They were rude and unprofessional and also made me fear for my safety, not only because I was pregnant, but I also have small children. They made my husband fear for our safety too because we were always outnumbered and could be overtaken at any moment. I called the police but they were not willing to assist us because they said this was all a civil matter. I noticed Yaniv previously owned a company called All Inclusive Moving, which had 72 BBB complaints so he had closed this company. I regret hiring All Star Moving because had I known they were so dishonest, I would have sold all my belongings. I had waited to file this complaint until after my items had been delivered because I did not want All Star Moving to retaliate against me.

i like the rest of used used all star movers for a recent cross country move. I too dealt with Monica who was as nice as could be prior to the day of them packing. I told her specifically what furniture I was bringing and even to the extent of explaining what pier nightstands are. They loaded 11 of the approx 30+ items I had listed and some boxes and them said that we had already taken up our cubic foot space on the truck.. we still had an entire bedroom and living room that were not yet loaded. the "man" told us it would be over 3x what the original quote was. We decided not to load the remainder at that time. When asked how the estimate was so far off - he told us we have "big furniture". i said that i had told Monica the size of the furniture and that there were x amount of pieces but that didn't seem to matter. he told me approx 7-10 days to our destination. the following week i again called Monica and asked where the furniture was and when it would be arriving. she was not nice or courteous and said it is 14 days to there. i said the other guy said 7 - 10 and she nastily said it is 14. i hung up and surprisingly within an hour we received a call from the movers saying they would be there in an hour. this was day 7. they came and when i asked where they got the furmiture since it was a totally different truck and did not say all star on it he said in brooklyn. he and the other gentleman unloading the furniture were very nice and efficient. fortunately we had no damage - but they make you pay prior to them unloading and you inspecting your furnitre. i agree with the rest of you - they are a scam and definitely are not a company i would ever want to deal wiht again. my next move will be with north american or mayflower or some other reputable mover that i will trust my furniture and belongings with.
