BRINGING AN ALASKAN MALAMUTE INTO YOUR HOME?
Too many of these gorgeous dogs end up in pounds or destroyed because of uneducated buyers. Everyone falls in love with the adorably fluffy puppy but not everyone is prepared or able to control the large, powerful, stubborn adult. The Alaskan Malamute is not recommended for a first time dog owner. I'm here to give you the pro's and con's of bringing one into your home. Educate yourself on the breed, their temperamant and how to train and handle them before jumping into a quick decision. There is nothing like the love of these dogs but puppyhood is NOT easy and they WILL test you!

ALASKAN MALAMUTE TRAINING AND GROOMING
You better love your vaccuum!
The Malamute will test you in ways you cannot imagine. They are extremely easy to housebreak and train because these dogs are smart and they LOVE to please you! However, if you do not have control of them early as the Alpha, you probably will not ever get it. Mals are pack dogs and need to have a leader of the pack and if you fail then they are more then happy to take over as that leader.
Do you hate to vaccuum? Please do NOT bring home a Malamute. You will vaccuum every day in the spring when they 'blow their coat'. You will get hair on your furniture and clothes!
- My Alaskan Malamute is smarter than your honor student
- This website will give you information on how to train and groom your Alaskan Malamute. Do your homework before bringing home a Malamute. There's things you need to know to make your puppy experience a happy and successful one. These truly are the most stubborn, yet sweetest and by far one of the most beautiful dogs in the world.
There's also a few fun stories of my two Malamutes on this website and a blog for them to share.
YOU HAVE A MALAMUTE YOU NEED A FURMINATOR!
Do yourself a favor and pick up a Furminator grooming tool. There is nothing like it! Although your Mal is a clean and odor free dog it does require brushing, especially in the spring when they are 'blowing their coats'. Malamute's play hard and you will see then cleaning themselves like a cat, they are very clean dogs but they need a little help to prevent matting with their beautiful hair! Amazon has amazing deals on Furminators....it's a gift for you and your dog!

DO YOU LOVE YOUR ALASKAN MALAMUTE?
Have a fun story?
Everyone that has an Alaskan Malamute as part of the family has a fun story to share!! Let's hear it!?? Does your Mal bring you dead animals as gifts? Do they talk? My female, Shiloh never talks unless she means business but my male, Malachi will hold an entire conversation with you with his 'woo woo' every chance he gets. Although my male is 143lbs and my female is 74lbs, Malachi will always let Shiloh have first pick of every treat, chewy or bone. He's such a gentleman! Oh, and Shiloh likes yellow apples, Malachi will only eat red apples so every night we cut up 2 apples for the three of us to share!

- Great lens about these lovely dogs. I have linked it to my new lens about a British Inuit dog - Kopek the Destroyer.

- Lobo was BIG. 147#. I have so many cool stories I could share about Lobo. He was a true Alpha. He used to hunt his own chow, often I'd call him and he'd come with a squirrel tail hanging from his mouth. I watched him hamstring a bull one time (long story), on another occassion he ripped apart a fence in a friends backyard to get at a german shepherd who annoyed him lol. He used to fish with me, he'd stand beside me, watch me hook a nice cutthroat and then steal it from me LOL. On other occassions he'd go hunting and bring me back a grouse for supper. He was one cool and funny dog.
Chena on the other hand was much smaller, about 70# and did NOT like water. She'd tip toe through a stream, shaking her paws like a cat, and wasn't nearly at home in the wilds as Lobo had been. I think if I'd had gotten her as a pup, like I did Lobo, she may have been much different and I know that whoever had her before me mistreated her terribly. She had all the signs of an abused dog when I found her at the shelter but she warmed to me very quickly. One evening at my home in Idaho she and I were watching TV in the fam room. She was laying with her head in my lap when all of a sudden she got up, race upstair to the sliding door and barked. She wanted out? So I got up, went to let her outside and when I opened the door she turned tail and ran back downs stairs! I thought what the heck? When I returned to the fam room she was stretched out on the couch - taking the whole thing - she had wanted the whole couch and decoyed me upstairs so she could get back and claim it LOL. She was funny and fun.

- I've had 2 mals. Lobo (Male i got as a pup) and Chena (female I adopted). Lobo passed away years ago and Chena just passed this spring. I spent days, sometimes month at a time in the rugged mountains of Idaho and Montana with my friends Lobo and Chena. I can see why some people simply aren't able to tolerate or control them but I never had either problem. Best damn friends a guy could have.

- I have 2 malamutes a dog and a bitch, milo and keira, milo I have had from day one at 8wks old, and keira is a rescue dog got at 18nths. Milo was not an easy puppy, he was a wolf in sheeps clothing! he had never been handled by people although I was lead to believe otherwise from unsrcupulous dealer! I dont think I could have been given a wolf cub any wilder than him! and that is not an exaggeration, puppyhood wasnt fluffy toys, just a sheer battle ground of wills, his will and my will. Patience boldness and my own stubborness overcame his, and I now have a 3 year old dog that truly adores me and I him, I dont have to get physical just a growl and he hits the deck. But he does like to go on the odd bin raid binge at times small price to pay for what he was! Keira has never given me a moments hassle from the day I had her, she is sweet natured, nurturing and obedient! I wouldnt be without either of them

- These are gorgeous dogs and I would love to have one, but I know better than to get one where I live. I had a Siberian Husky from when I lived out west and she was too hot here. When she passed I knew better than to replace her with another dog with so much fur.

- Congratulations on LOTD. I could never have a Malamute. There are too many wild critters in our back yard. They are beautiful, though.
