All about Mangos

Ranked #7,454 in Food & Cooking, #135,584 overall

So I planted this little mango tree...

Because mangos are my favorite, and now I'm on a mission to find out everything I possibly can about this fruit. Mango drinks, recipes, artwork and books. How do you pick a good one and am I doing all I can to care for the tree? All things I've got to find out.

I'm truly excited about all the new growth on my little tree (yep, that's it in the pic!) and I've come to realize my mango tree must be incredibly hardy. I planted it just over a year ago, and last year one night it got below freezing - I thought it might die, even though I draped it with a blanket, but lo and behold, it survived just fine! Now it is just over 5 feet tall and I'm wondering if maybe this year it will grow some fruit.

So I hope you'll pick this lens as a favorite if you like Mangos (or if maybe you're not sure) because I'll be adding to this for a long time to come as the tree grows and bears fruit.

Feast your eyes:

Mangos are so pretty, don't you just want to sink your teeth in?

If you ever visit a mango grove...

See if you find tranquility.

Mangos have their origin in India, and the mango tree is considered sacred there since it is said that the Buddha found tranquility in a mango grove.

The Environmental Working Group lists mangos among the fruits least likely to be contaminated with pesticides.

Mangos are the most popular fruit in the world!

Also called the "king of fruit," mangos are sweet, luscious, and juicy.

All good reasons to find some personal tranquility in a mango.

I don't have a grove, just a tree.

What to do to take care of your mango tree:

They take full sun and lots of water for really great fruit. A tropical climate is the best, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Sensitive to cold, especially young mango trees need to be protected if you know a freeze is coming. Drape the little tree with a blanket to keep the frost off, at least until they are about 3 years old.

Also when the tree is young, stake it so it grows straight- mango trees can get enormous, and will eventually provide a wonderful shady spot in your yard.

My tree is a "Tommy Atkins," (see some more varities later in this lens) and the fruit ripens in June to July. This is the most popular variety planted here in the states and usually what you'll find in the grocery store.

Update on my tree 6-25-09

Its getting lots of rain lately, look how big its getting!

At about six feet tall now, the tree is more of a presence in the yard. Its very bushy now, and I know I need to trim off leaves from the trunk soon. No fruit right now, but I'm watching and hopeful!

My photo looks sort of washed out because of the morning sun but I thought it had kind of a dreamy feel to it- mango trees have an old look to them anyway so it fits. I took this picture this morning, it is already almost 90 degrees outside and I can tell this tree loves the heat and humidity. It is flourishing!

I love how mango trees look with the droopy leaves and lots of shade. At the rate mine is growing, it won't be too long before I have a great shade tree.

So that's about all for the update today, I am really looking forward to getting fruit off this great little tree and tasting the wonderful mango sweetness.

(I'll have a big huge update when that happens ) :)

I once had a mango so delicious i told everyone....everyone how delicious it was. I talked about it for days, weeks... this is how good the mango was. It had the perfect texture, the perfect sweetness, the perfect juiciness, and the perfect amount of mango meat. If a person could fall in love with a mango I would. I did. I still think about that mango.... blessed

I was very excited when we moved into our present house and we had a mango tree. Unfortunately, I soon found out I was allergic to the sap. Contains the same allergenic as poison ivy - who knew! Still love to eat them though.
