Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

A form of arthritis

The carpal tunnel is located between the hand and the arm, in other words the wrist. It's called carpal tunnel because it is made up of the 8 carpal bones and the ligaments in the wrist. The median nerve passes through this area. When it gets stressed or over worked the nerve is pinched causing the pain in the fingers and the palm of the hand. Of course it seems that the people that get this condition the most are the ones who repetitively move their fingers and hands in the same motion. Also rheumatoid arthritis patients seem to get carpal tunnel syndrome as well as those suffering from diabetes.

Arthritis and diet

For some types of arthritis maintaining a certain diet is vital. Gout sufferers have to be careful to have a diet low in purine rich foods and very little alcohol if any. Whereas Rhuematoid arthritis isn't improved by dieting. Of course keeping excess weight off of your body always lessens the strain on joints and muscles.

It is considered by some as a miracle drug that helps with such diverse physical problems as depression, reduction in cholesterol, weight loss and even provides an increase in sexual response. AS for helping alleviate the pain of arthritis, some claim that not only does bee pollen help with weight control, which in turn helps ease arthritis, it also provides calcium that our body needs for strong bones.

Medicinal Treatment for Arthritis

There are many medications on the market for arthritis. The trick is to find one that doesn't have (many) side effects.

NSAIDS nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs:

Nsaids are the most common type of arthritis drugs. They work by blocking the activity of enzymes known as COX. The most common nsaids are salicylates (like aspirin), Trilisate and Novasal (Doan's pills)

DMARDs(Disease-Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs)
DMARDs are slow acting drugs that could take up to a month to work. They are also called second line agents. They are effective in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. They can be very effective and stop joint damage.

Corticosteroids (Steroids)
Corticosteroids are strong drugs that can stop swelling and joint pain almost immediately. They also have the potential of dangerous side effects.

Analgesics (Pain Killers)
Analgesics are pain relievers; they have no effect on inflammation. Tylenol is an analgesic.
