Selecting The Perfect First Communion Dress

First Communion is one of the most sacred and vital celebrations of the Roman Catholic Church. For young Catholics, it is a momentous event - the welcoming of Christ in their lives and the acceptance of the Catholic faith. In ceremonial terminology, First Communion is the initial receipt of the Sacrament of the Eucharist, which translates to the receiving of the body and blood of Christ.

First Communion entails a lot of preparation. Because it is a focal point of the Roman Catholic Church, it is highly regarded and celebrated by the Catholic community. First Confession or the Sacrament of Penance should be taken at least a week before one can receive her First Communion. Moreover, The Sacrament of Baptism should have also been administered to be eligible for the Holy Eucharist. The families also take time to prepare the First Communion dresses or suits the children wear for this day.

The standard age to receive First Communion is seven or eight years old. This is considered the age of discretion or reasoning where children can already differentiate the Eucharist from regular bread. At this age, they would have understood the holy transformation of bread and wine to represent the body and blood of Jesus Christ and therefore embody His suffering.

For your little girl, this religious event could be one of the most important times in her life. If a woman prepares conscientiously for her wedding day in searching for the perfect bridal dress, then it is with the same attention a young girl gives to her day of First Communion in choosing for the special First Communion dress. First Communion dresses are mostly in white as this color reflects purity. White is a symbolic mark of Catholic tradition to signify innocence and cleanliness of spirit.

Choosing The Perfect Dress

Styles That Will Help Make Her Special Day Perfect

There are many different styles of First Communion dresses that you can choose from. Most often seen are formal-looking full length dresses with lots of details such as beads and sequins. This dress is definitely eye-catching and your little girl will feel like a princess. On the other hand, she might like the more subtle variety of a calf-length First Communion dress with fine details. This kind of dress is not too flashy with its design but exudes style nonetheless. If your girl prefers a simpler, more straightforward dress, this is ideal for her. Finally, numerous First Communion dresses have evolved with time. Modern designs show sleeveless and shorter First Communion dresses with a more sophisticated look and added embellishments like sash, ribbons and ruffles. Although wearing a dress like this can make your girl ultra hip and cool, make sure that the church allows this style. Some churches have dress codes, so ask beforehand if a sleeveless or knee-length First Communion dress is acceptable.

A trademark of the Church's emphasis on propriety is the veil. It is worn to cover the face or the head as a religious item in honor of the sacredness of the church. It has also become a sought-after accessory to match the First Communion dress. Fashion has also dictated the trend of wearing white gloves that can either be hand-fitted or elbow-length. This embellishment is best for a winter First Communion. If your little girl wants to

Can a First Communion Dress Double as a Flower Girl Dress?

Can a First Communion dress double as a flower girl dress? Or the reverse?

Absolutely! There's no doubt about it!

It is very popular for a flower girl to wear a white dress. It can be accented with a color to coordinate with the wedding party in several ways.

This only works if the bride is wearing a white dress, of course. If she is wearing an off-white color (or a silk dress, which is always a shade darker than bright white), she won't want her flower girls in a white dress. Whoever is in the darker shade will look dingy - and you certainly don't want it to be the bride!
