A Little History

Halloween is a holiday which is traditionally celebrated on October 31st. It has been called All Hallows Eve and All Saints Eve. The Christian holiday All Saints Day is the next day, Nov. 1st, but Halloween really isn't perceived as a type of religious holiday.

Normally the day is associated with the colors black and orange, as well as with pumpkins, jack -o-'lanterns, ghosts, haunted houses, costumes, trick or treating and more.

Halloween also had origins in a Celtic festival known as Samhain, which was a celebration of the end of the harvest season. The festivals included bonfires and wearing of masks to placate or compete with evil spirits who people thought were damaging their crops.

Amityville House portrayed in movies as haunted

The Amityville House seen here is located in Amityville Long Island. The house was owned by the Lutz family who believed it to be hunted when they moved into it 13 months after the previous owner had killed his family in the house.

The movie, the Amityville horror was based on the paranormal experiences the Lutz family believed were happening because of "ghosts" that were inhabiting the house; ghosts of the murdered family.

Although nothing was ever proven about the house being haunted, a book and movie were made based on the information given by the Lutz family who moved out of the house 1 year after moving in.

Others have lived in the renovated home since, and the town has even changed the address of the home. Notably, a man who lived in the house from 1987-1997 was killed in the 911 terrorist attacks in NYC.

Winchester Mystery House said to be haunted

Winchester House is a house in California which has long been thought to be haunted. Once the home of gun magnate William Winchester and his wife Sarah, the home is now strictly a tourist attraction.

Flying Dutchmen Ghost Ship

The Flying Dutchmen according to lore is a ghost ship that can never go home and must stay at sea forever. It is often seen from a distance shrouded in a ghostly light.

This is interesting to me because our school district sports teams are the dutchmen and our symbol is this ship!

“Quotes, Sayings and even poems can be attributed to Halloween. Some of these are below.”

Hamlet and his father's ghost

About this photo: A ghost tells Hamlet that he is the spirit of his father and reveals to Hamlet that Claudius murdered King Hamlet by pouring poison in his ear. The Ghost ( supposedly Hamlet's father) demands that Hamlet avenge his death. Hamlet waivers however, because he isn't sure whether or not the ghost is being truthful.

“Ghosts, like ladies, never speak till spoke to.
- - -Richard Harris
Barham”

Casper the friendly ghost

Casper the friendly ghost is a character found in a children's cartoon series. Casper appears to be a child ghost with ghost parents, although there was some controversy as to whether he was actually a ghost of a child. The character was created in the 1930's and was on television and has also been recreated for the movies.

“When witches go riding,
and black cats are seen,
the moon laughs and whispers,
'tis near Halloween.”

Scary Black Cat

The Black Cat associated with the poem the Black Cat by Edgar Allen Poe.

Ghost of the Headless Horseman chasing Icabod Crane

The headless horseman was a legend about a soldier, a Hessian in the Revolutionary War whose head was supposedly blown off after being struck by a cannonball. This headless horseman, portrayed as a ghost is often seen chasing nightly travelers.

The most notable headless horseman has appeared in the United States in a short story written by Washington Irving. The story takes place in Sleepy Hollow, NY where the protagonist is Ichabod Crane, a school teacher whose fate is unsure after a meeting with the ghost of the headless horseman.

“A grandmother pretends she doesn't know who you are on Halloween. ~Erma Bombeck”

Trick or Treating

A tradition in the US and other countries where children dress up in costumes and go from home to home asking for and receiving candy or other treats. Although for the most part the tradition continues, often times parents go along with their children for safety reasons. Parties and trick or tricking in schools and local malls have taken the place of some trick or treating, in order for children to have fun in a safe environment.

Halloween Party in Ireland 1832

Participants at the party bob for apples and play Snap Apple; chasing an apple swinging from a string. Another game is trying to grab and eat a doughnut on a string without using your hands to help you. The parties also included ghost stories and watching scary movies.

Jack-O-Lanterns

Jack-O-Lanterns are typically carved out pumpkins which are lit. They usually have scary faces carved in them. The top of the pumpkin is usually cut off and replaced once the pumpkin is carved and a light of some sort (usually a candle) is put inside.

A Little Pumpkin Pie Recipe

This delicious pumpkin pie recipe is courtesy of Weight Watchers. This recipe serves 8 and is the equivalent of 3 points per slice. It's good for everyone, even those who don't have to watch their weight.

3 oz reduced-fat cinnamon graham crackers, about 5 1/2 sheets
1 Tbsp packed light brown sugar
2 Tbsp margarine, melted
2 large egg white(s)
1 large egg(s)
1/2 dark brown sugar
1/4 tsp table salt
2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1 cup canned pumpkin
1/2 cup fat-free evaporated milk
1/4 cup lite whipped topping

Preheat oven to 350 degrees positioning oven rack in the middle. Blend graham crackers and light brown sugar in a blender or food processor. Once the crackers are crumbs, put them in a bowl and add margarine. Once blended, put crumbs in the bottom and sides of a 9 inch pie plate. Refrigerate this crust for about 30 minutes. Once cooled, bake the crust for 8-10 minutes and then cool again.

While crust is cooling, in a bowl whip egg whites using a beater and beat until frothy. Add egg, dark brown sugar , salt, pumpkin pie spice, canned pumpkin and evaporated milk. Beat pumpkin custard until smooth and pour into pie shell. Bake about 45 to 55 minutes. Test with a knife to see if done. Slice into 8 pieces, top each piece with 1/2 tablespoon of whipped topping and serve warm or at room temperature
