Choosing The Right Contractor

Brushing sidingDepending on the scale of the project, choosing to work with a professional painting contractor can indeed be a wise choice. I am often asked to bid on projects started on by the homeowner and then find my job even more time consuming due to clean up of sloppy work and poor preparation. The big box stores sponsor many of the DIY shows on today. The message of how easy it is to paint like a pro is sent in an effort to move its product off the shelves. This seemingly constant stream of commercials and do it yourself geared television shows mask the reality of the true size and scope of the steps involved in the projects featured. So the next questions becomes who do I hire? For me when I look to hire a professional for a project it always comes down to who I think I can trust. Compliance with the required state licensing and insurance are a given. Positive reviews from previous customers are very important as well. Most contractors you invite to bid on your project will probably be fairly equal with meeting the licensing requirements and references from past customers. Then the cost factor comes in. Of course cost can be measured different ways. I like to think of cost in relation to value. Value is not always measured in terms of the initial dollars spent on the project but rather the customers overall experience with the course of the project. There are many factors to consider such as:
Is this contractor going to be respectful of my home and treat it like it was their own?
Do they have a genuine interest in the longevity of new enhanced appearance?
Do they specialize in repainting or do they do new construction?
Do they work in a manner that disturbs my routine as little as possible?
Does my contractor listen to my concerns and address them?
Will my project be completed on schedule?
Does the crew work safe and keep the work area clean?
Does my gut tell me that I can trust this person to do the right thing?
Will the contractor work on the project daily?

The bottom line is lowest bidder is often times not the best overall value and it is wise to consider all the factors involved besides the lowest time estimated to complete the project and dollar amount the painting contractor can figure.
