or Allan R. Wallace in a nutshell

This picture is actually of lt.-colonel Allan B. Wallace, taken in 1898. I'm sure he is bald under that hat. I've shown the picture to close friends and they thought it was me dressed up in a period costume.

I don't like labels, they are too convenient a way to mentally sort, file, and then ignore new information. I'm sure some will leave this page due to a part of my eccentric descriptive - and they may miss something that would have profited them.

Allan R. Wallace Biography

Allan Wallace Lensography

What you learn about me will be worthless unless it helps you learn more about yourself.

Almost too much family history

but it does explain a lot

Our family oral history states that William Wallace had children by that gal the English sheriff killed. The children were hidden as it might have been a capitol offense to be a Braveheart heir.

Kids don't want to be tortured and have their pieces dragged through Scotland as a warning. Happily, you can help ensure the future will not care what tribe anyone's ancestors wandered in.

The English still didn't like us. We were kicked out of Scotland and sent into exile in Ireland. That was still too close, so in the late 1600s Dr. Matthew Wallace and his wife Elizabeth were exiled by the British to the American colonies.

We did get even. A hundred years later we and our friends exiled the English back to Britain - we kept the colonies.

They were nice back then.

I love books - but I can recommend these few movies.

There are few movies I can watch attentively, I tend to wander off if a movie becomes predictable.

Movies require you to suspend dis-belief and let yourself become part of the story - kind of like listening to a politician. ("those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities." - Voltaire)

Most modern movies have agendas and are trying to sell something - I'm not buying. These few allow me to stay and enjoy the film. I will modify this list occasionally.

If even I can enjoy them, you will probably love them.

Wallaceonian quotes | Allan R. Wallace Quotes

"Life, liberty and love -- these three: to experience them fully you must risk them fully." - Allan Wallace

"Write a wise saying and your name will live forever." - Unknown
"Write a wise saying and many famous people will get credit for it."
arwally
"The trouble with quotes on the internet is you never know if they are genuine" - George Washington

I do get quoted every now and then, sometimes by myself. Everyone likes using an appropriate phrase to delineate a thought, occasionally I have a good one. I'll rotate in new quotes occasionally

"If there are several opposing opinions on an issue, all of them can't be right; however, all of them can be very wrong." - Allan Wallace

"Our knowledge is so limited, our abilities seem so inadequate, most people see themselves as small insects - They cope by being serious about the crack in the sidewalk where they were born. Ignoring limitless potential within a wondrous world, they cling to the security of their limited crack. Crawl out of the crack, take a few steps down the sidewalk, then decide where you want to fly. You are the dragon." - Allan R. Wallace

"Regardless of what you have been taught to believe; your most important asset is time - not money or possessions. Your most important impact will be made through relationships - not through positions or certifications." - A R Wallace

"Your life is a burning match. Ignite a bonfire." - Allan Wallace

"Human Rights bless all through their complicit simplicity, by placing people above unjust law." - Allan R. Wallace

"IT has not happened, does not mean IT will not happen. If the fire department told you your untrimmed weeds were a fire hazard - they were not wrong because your house has not yet burned down." - Allan Wallace

"Bureaucracies are inherently unjust. But bureaucrats are like weeds, pull one and tomorrow there will be two. Leave them alone and there will soon be a walled compound with administrative tower buildings and perimeter signs proclaiming that this invaluable sanctuary is off limits - except to more weeds." - Allan R. Wallace

"The risks and rewards of natural enterprise are greater, and of far more value to society, than any illusions of security that bind human cogs to a social machine." - Allan Wallace

"Our massively interconnected yet fiercely independent future will favor prepared (your responsibility) and adaptive (your opportunity) minds." - Allan R. Wallace

"We are surrounded by easily perceived barriers that limit our achievement. Most such walls were erected using substantial appearing mists of ignorance. We need to discover and acknowledge these boundaries, and then run through them." - Allan Wallace

"Doing something is not important. Doing the right things at the right times is crucial." - Allan R. Wallace

Allowing abundance is more effective than fighting poverty.

"Start making mistakes now so your solutions arrive in time. Many civilizations deserve to fall and will. It's up to you to craft support for a superior replacement. Get to work." - A. R. Wallace

"I just might be wrong. But if you view change as a problem rather than an opportunity you'll always be too late. Visionaries and crackpots are always too soon and pay a price for their insight.
I'll accept that."
Allan R. Wallace

Life Changing Quotes By Others

Quotations are a glitter of gold beneath the sand. Agree or disagree strongly and it is time to dig deeper - but never let statements of an authority substitute for your own thinking.

"Where liberty dwells, there is my country." - Benjamin Franklin

"Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. To keep our faces toward change and behave like free spirits in the presence of fate is strength undefeatable." - Helen Keller

"When buying and selling are controlled by legislation, the first things to be bought and sold are legislators." - P.J. O'Rourke

"A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have." - Thomas Jefferson

"The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of the blessings. The inherent blessing of socialism is the equal sharing of misery." - Winston Churchill

"He that would make his own liberty secure must guard even his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself." - Thomas Paine

"Children who are taught to live happily on a little owe more to their parents' wisdom than children who inherit a lot owe to their parents' care" - William Penn

"Everything that is really great and inspiring is created by the individual who can labor in freedom." - Albert Einstein

"Individuality is the aim of political liberty. By leaving the citizen as much freedom of action and of being as comports with order and the rights of others, the institutions render him truly a freeman. He is left to pursue his means of happiness in his own manner." - James Fenimore Cooper

"When goods do not cross borders, soldiers will." - Bastiat

But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. James 1:25, The Bible

"I yam what I yam, and that's all what I yam." Popeye the sailor man (by Elzie Crisler Segar)

But what more oft, in nations grown corrupt, and by their vices brought to servitude, than to love bondage more than liberty - bondage with ease than strenuous liberty - and to despise, or envy, or suspect, whom God hath of his special favor raised as their deliverer? - John Milton

Let's see, can I limit this to my favorite 500 books?

Oops, Amazon only lets me pick five.

This is pretty random.

From junior high through college I probably read a book a day. I still read a lot. I'll have to come back here regularly and rotate these about. To get a deeper look at literature, check out my Renaissance education lens. To play with lit, do some editing on my squidpublish novel, Complicit Simplicity - Hackers End Game.

Freedom involves giving everyman his voice, no matter how it may grate on your nerves. Responsibility involves trying to understand those that oppose you, seeking to find your own errors. Morality involves finding truth through diligence -- and having the courage to maintain your allegiance to truth alone.

There is a man I disagree with on many issues and align closely with on others, Gore Vidal. I deeply respect his independence and persistence at presenting what he views as truth. Truth is not found in a ballet box, but by an ongoing personal search -- a dangerous quest embraced by few. In describing an interview with Vidal, Tim Teeman had this to say about him, "...deliberately unfixed allegiances and an enduring belief in an American republic and railing sadness at how that ideal has been corrupted."

"deliberately unfixed allegiances," That is a wonderful summation of an ideal:

Think

don't follow.

About My Christian Faith

Christianity is about a relationship - not about rules and formulas.

Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. Galatians 3:24

Regulation vs. Freedom:
authority = complexity & obstruction,
independence = simplicity & responsibility

God gave us mental independence so we can make up our own minds; and then change our minds as we free ourselves from limitations.

Some folks think they are Christian and don't personally know God. They are, as Corrie Ten Boom said, "Thinking they are cars because they were born in a garage."

On the other hand some Atheists think I need to prove God exists. They make the logical error of confusing an absence of proof they will consider with proof of absence. Let them explain to one who knows God well that he does not exist.

I do not have to prove my brother exists because someone has not seen him, talked to him, or doubts I have a brother. I know him and I'm willing to introduce you to my brother if you are interested - he's a good guy.

In the same way I know God. I talk with him, and I ask for his help just as I would from my older brother if he were here.

For me it is simple.

God is smarter than I am. God is wiser than I am. God loves me more than I love myself. I would have to be self-destructive not to do as he suggests, when he suggests - I know it will be the best choice for both my life and the lives of others.

Jesus has given himself to create a unique relationship with you. The deal is on the table, examine it.

There is no formulaic one, three, or five step route to this relationship - there is his way, for you, as an individual. He is waiting, step out and meet him.

If you have questions after examining God's offer - my contact link, behind my bio picture, at top of page is open. Or you can consider this a formal introduction and talk to God yourself.

A show tune from a favorite movie...

makes this a favorite show tune.

Yes, I watch the whole movie. When I sing this song to myself, I change 'fortuosity' to 'God's generosity.'

I've been reading your lens, and another of your lenses, for the last 30 minutes and I'm still not sure exactly what you are trying to say about anything in particular. I actually just wanted some advice on how to use Squidoo to help me get a book written. Would you have some less insane sounding advice to give sir? Please.

I can tell you what the world would call sane. Get a masters degree in literature and attend a lot of writer's workshops.

The most useful idea: if you don't feel like you have to write it, find another less ridiculous hobby to waste time on, the chances of success are very low.

You can look at the first book I wrote on Squidoo, I learned a lot from the effort. I basically wrote until I finished a text module. I called that a chapter. I eventually published a much edited version of it.

I assume you've viewed my complicityuniverse lens and the write-my-book lens. There are good ideas there, read them again and dig them out.

Here is a link to a pair of Seth posts for would be authors. I may be too close to Kurt Vonnegut for you; compared to me Seth is very sane: http://www.thedominoproject.com/2012/01/advice-for-authors-part-one-and-part-two.html

Interesting reading, thanks. Our family lore claims that our ancestors were also kicked out of Scotland, albeit for being horse thieves! I suppose not everyone was destined for a colorful history! :-)

I thought you weren't around any longer Allan. I'm almost positive I have been here before, but obviously not. I'm left wondering if your families brief sojourn in Ireland left you with the gift of the gab. More importantly, a superlative mind, we could do with some of that here at the moment. I'm not an overtly religious man Allan, but God bless. Always a joy reading your lenses.
