Gift Ideas to Make Shopping Easier
Some people know exactly what gift to give another person. However not everyone is so fortunate. Coming up with a general idea for a gift is usually harder then actually finding the specific gift once you have some ideas. Of course you can wonder through your local shopping mall going from store to store trying to get some idea of what to purchase. OH I hate shopping, this is the worst way to approach a gift purchase. Many people just avoid the unique or creative gift and give the old gift card. Sometimes people just buy something to get it done. However with just a little thought, you can find a unique or creative gift idea. Here are a few helpful tips to get you started.

Making Friends Through Conversation
Getting to know someone
People enjoy the conversation of others, even an introvert or very shy person. However getting the conversation started can be sometimes difficult. There is always the weather, a game, movies, headline news, family or an unlimited number of other topics to talk about. These topics are good for some small talk but don't make for a very lengthy or meaningful conversation. The most important things to remember is to "listen" and that "people love to talk about themselves". Remembering these two things and having a good conversation from start to finish will be much easier.
If needed, introduce yourself early in the conversation if there is anyone you do not know. Knowing other people's names and a little about each person, is a good start at making the conversation much easier. Use people's names during the conversation.
Once you know a little about someone, you can use this to start a conversation by asking something about themselves; their job, hobbies or involved activities. With people you have just met, make small talk first and don't get too personal.
Some people will try to dominate the conversation, be a little self-centered and feel the need to have the best story. It is much better to listen to what others have to say, this will give you other ways to expand the conversation. Remember what you have learned about the other person and then ask related questions. You need to be genuinely interested in the other person's point of view. Don't change the subject abruptly and try to continue the flow of conversation.
Friends through Conversation
Friends and good conversation is what most gatherings are about. People can learn, assist and enjoy each other through conversation. Here are a few more hints that may help:
Introduce yourself - try to know the name and a little about each person within the conversation. Be genuinely interested in each person.
Listen and then listen some more - the most best part of any conversation is what you learn by listening to others. Focus and pay attention to the person who is speaking, this will give you some thoughts that you can inject into the conversation later. Keep eye contact with the person speaking. A good conversationalist must be a good listener first.
Be yourself - don't be afraid to be yourself and accept others for who they are. Don't show your insecurity by making negative comments about others. If there is someone you just don't like being around, try to avoid them if you can. If not, be the better person and ignore many of their comments and forget any rivalry.
Ask - a good way to keep a conversation going is to ask questions. This also lets the other person know that you are paying attention and are interested. Questions are ways to lean more about the person speaking, not just the topic of conversation. What is the reason you wanted to have a conversation with the person in the first place? If the conversation is about something you know little about, take this opportunity to ask questions and learn.
Difference of opinion - people have different opinions which are what makes a conversation interesting. However don't disagree just to disagree. If you do disagree with a certain point but the point is of little importance, ignore it and move on. If you feel that it is important to point out some difference of opinion, do it politely. Differences of opinions help make a conversation interesting but too much disagreeing can make a conversation uncomfortable for others. And agreeing with every point makes for a dull conversation. If you feel the need to explain an opposing viewpoint, express it simply and without putting the other person on the defensive.
Topics to avoid - be careful when asking personal questions, speaking about politics, religion or any topic that could generate an argument. This is especially true with people who are not good friends.
Plan ahead - if you know in advance that you will be speaking with certain people, plan ahead to come up a few thoughts relative to their interests.
Be sincere - when contributing to a conversation, believe in what you are saying, don't just say something for the sake of talking.
Avoid - don't swear or curse, don't interrupt, don't try to finish what someone else is saying, don't mumble, and don't talk too loudly. There are certain words that should be avoided or limited when possible. The word "but" sounds disagreeable, use the word "and" instead. Others filler words like "and um", "like um", and "you know" are just an annoyance to others.
Summarize - many times if there is a question on what someone has said, repeat back in your own words and ask if you understand what they said correctly. This can be used also if you just don't have another response but do this on a very limited basis.
Flow and transition - at times the conversation will seem to stop. This is a great time when you can bring up a point you thought about earlier, ask a question or summarize a point for clarification. If the conversation just seems over for this topic, it may be time to transition to another topic. Try to leave every conversation on a positive note.

Photographing children can be a very challenging task, but it also can be very enjoyable and entertaining. To be able to produce the best photos you will need to get to know your subject and their temperament. The better you understand them, the better you will be able to make them feel comfortable and allow them to have fun while taking some pictures. Some kids will need a little warm up time to get used to you and the new surroundings, while others are ready to jump right in. To help a child feel a little more at ease with you, get down on their level. The Art of Entertaining
Introduction to Entertaining
Entertaining is an art; it takes organization, planning and execution skills. The hostess has to be capable of doing multiple tasks, sometimes at the same time. Entertaining can be empowering when you can pull together an enjoyable party for all your guests. Take pride in what you can do and remember you are giving others and yourself an enjoyable time that people can remember. There are many steps involved, some optional and some not, in putting together any event. The event or party could be a formal dinner party, a casual backyard barbeque, a birthday party or a wedding reception.Entertaining is about having a good time and should be very gratifying knowing you are creating something special that others can enjoy. Entertaining at home can be similar to a comedian or other entertainer on stage performing for an audience. There is style, technique, planning and delivery. Entertaining at home also includes these ingredients and both the entertainer and hostess must mix the items correctly to create an enjoyable experience for their guests. Not all parties are a success; some totally fail, most are OK but few are great.

Tips on Entertaining Style
What is your style?
One of the first entertaining tips is to know your style and then entertaining becomes much easier because your style helps makes many of the decisions and gives you the needed confidence. Your style helps you decide on types of food, colors, table settings, music and the total atmosphere of the gathering.Your style defines you and no one else. You may have a similar style to others in the likes and dislikes of certain things, but only you can define your own style. Look through any fashion, entertaining or house magazines and you will be drawn to certain images and articles more than others. You will just have more interest and more in common with certain types of things than others. Go shopping, not necessarily to buy, for a complete new table setting; table cloth, dishes, glasses, silverware and decorations. What colors, shapes and sizes do you prefer? Do you like the clean, design shape of modern flatware? Or the classic, architectural inspired patterns. Maybe you would prefer the floral and decorative themes. It is common for people to use parts of several styles to help define their own style.

Planning a Party Guide

When there is so much to do and so little time, it is easy to lose track of some details and to spend too much time on something that is just not that important to the overall success. Usually a lack of planning contributes to more trips to supermarket, misplaced items or under estimated time for a certain task. Planning the details up-front allows you to better understand the many layers and tasks that need to be accomplished. With this high level view of the project, you are in a better position to get things done, how and when needed. For the complete article: Guide to Planning a Party
Wine Selection
The Grapes of Wine
Wine Selection can be very difficult when choosing for large groups like wedding receptions, formal parties and business dinners. There are several factors to consider: price, occasion, preference and pairing.Notice that at most restaurants, each table will have only one wine list which forces either only one person to take the wine ordering responsibility or you ask for more wine lists. If you are the one taking the responsibility, it is always good etiquette to ask other guests for suggestions. It's also better to order the wine after everyone has chosen their entrée, which provides more information for wine pairing. One more thing, if you are not the host but are taking the wine selection responsibility, don't order the most expensive wines.

How to Reduce Airfare Costs
Discount Travel
The airfare system for domestic and international travel is very complex and is always based upon the airlines getting the maximum revenue possible. There are some rules that may seem unintelligent, but the airlines spend millions of dollars researching travel patterns and they very well understand how to get the most travel dollars possible. So for you to spend the least travel dollars possible, you should understand some of the reasoning behind airfare prices.Full fare tickets are expensive but have no restrictions and are very seldom purchased by the public. Anything less than full fare will be called a restricted or discounted ticket which will include restrictions and penalties. Airlines want to fill as many seats as possible, so they offer discounted tickets with associated penalties and restrictions

Table and Buffet Serving Styles
Food Serving Styles
Food serving styles can be classified as Table Service and Buffet Service styles. There are variations within each of these depending upon your entertaining style. The Table Service is typically more formal and is for fewer people. The Buffet Service is a casual setting and great for larger gatherings. The number of guests is normally the leading factor in determining the serving style. However a small tea or cocktail party with just a few appetizers is a good opportunity for a friends and family buffet where the guests can serve themselves as the party progresses. For the complete article: Table and Buffet Serving Styles

Cooking for a Crowd
Entertaining 50 Guests

Cooking for a crowd is not the easiest part of entertaining unless you have experience in cooking for a large number of people. One thing that can be confusing is when you need to determine the amount of food needed. Also cooks will try to just multiply the recipe ingredients to feed larger crowds, not always the best approach, try batch cooking instead. So if you need to determine how many pounds of meat, how many potatoes, or how much pasta will be needed for a group of 50, this is where you can start. Here even experienced cooks can use some basic cooking skills help.
First, start with a simple menu where most if not all the dishes can be made in advance. There is not enough time in the day to prepare everything the same day unless you have others helping and a very large kitchen. Any entrée that can be cooked the day before the party and then reheated the day of the party will help. If it is a buffet style where guests may be balancing the plate with one hand while standing, choose food that can be dished up in bite sized proportions and does not require cutting or handling with two hands.

Bartending Accessories Guide
Guide to Bartending
You don't have to be a professional bartender to mix a few drinks. However you do need some basic accessories, some glassware, a few ingredients and a little knowledge. The bartending accessories are a mixture of some basic utensils found in most kitchens and some more specialized equipment. The key kitchen utensils include items like the can opener, bottle opener, a corkscrew, a cutting board, electric blender, grater, ice bucket and measuring cups.
The bartending accessories that are not so typical will be the shaker, a bar measure or jigger, a bar strainer, a bar spoon, a muddler and a mixing glass. Most of these are self-evident but for the muddler which is used to crush certain ingredients like fruit or mint to extract the flavor. The jigger is for measuring.
The cocktail shaker is essential for blending ingredients in cocktails and mixed drinks, a must have item if you want to serve more then beer and wine. It is used to mix drinks with ingredients that are difficult to combine with just a mixing glass. Ingredients such as liqueurs, fruit juices, egg yolks and cream can be easily mixed with a shaker but not so easily with just a mixing glass. One version is a three part shaker that consists of a beaker, a lid, and a strainer. Sometimes the strainer is part of the lid which means the lid actually has a second lid that can be removed for pouring the strained mixed cocktail. The strainer holds back pieces of ice, fruit and seeds when pouring the cocktail. However the strainer can be difficult to clean and the liquid pours out slowly.

Balloon Arch for Decoration
A balloon arch works great to highlight an entrance or exit. You can build a single balloon arch, multi balloon arch or rainbow arch. Before you decide on what design you would like to go with, here are a few general hints.
- Helium filled balloons start to fall 7 to 15 hours after they are filled, so you will need to build your arch 2 to 3 hours before the party or use a product called hi-float to extend the life of your balloons. Hi-float will make your balloons last at least a few days. You can find hi-float at some party stores starting around $12 a bottle (for a pint). Building an arch is time consuming and most likely you will have plenty of other things to do before the party, so I would highly recommend using hi-float and building your arch the morning before the party.

Decorating with Balloons
Balloon Columns
Balloon columns are air filled balloons that are attached to a base of some sort. You can make columns without a base, by using helium filled balloons but your column will not always stay straight up. You can purchase a base or make your own out of wood, PVC pipe or something else that you might have on hand. I have used my son's t-ball tee before and it seemed to work out okay.
Balloon columns are assembled very close to them same way arches are. Here are a few simple steps.
1. Blow up two balloons and tie them together.
2. Blow up two more balloons, tie them together and then twist both sets of two together.
3. Attach them to the bottom of your column base by twisting them on. These balloons should be larger then the next several layers. The bottom and top layers should stand out more than the middle by their size.
4. Repeat steps one and two and then add to your column. Repeat until you have reached the top of your column.
5. Add a large balloon on top with ribbon to finish it off. To add a little more decoration, stuff your top balloon with another balloon or with confetti.
Balloon Bouquets
Tips
It is a lot of fun to create your own balloon bouquets and be creative. Here are a few ideas to try for balloon bouquets.
-To add a more elegant look to your bouquets use ribbon instead of streamers.
-Add another balloon or confetti inside your balloon.
-Instead of using a weight for your bouquets, tie all the balloons together, creating a flower look and let them float above your table. You can let streamer hang down from the balloons for added decoration. You could also use air filled balloons and hang them from the ceiling.
Girls Party Idea
Spa Slumber Party
At least once a year all the girls in my family get together and have a girls night. No guys allowed. We stock up on mud mask, fingernail polish, movies and popcorn. We order pizza for dinner and then later snack on our popcorn. Everyone gets their finger and toenails done, and a mud mask. All the girls love it.
Some years we do little projects. One year we all made homemade glitter. We have also done friendship bracelets and beading in the past. Then there have been nights we get into games or story telling. It just all depends on what people are up for. It doesn't really matter what we do, as long as we are all there.
