Alligators and Crocodiles Make Fun Gifts

Alligators and crocodiles are reptiles - scaly and even scary-looking - yet people continue to be attracted to these creatures and children love them in 'toy' form. The popularity of these reptiles is evidenced by the numerous tourist attractions filled with these Big Lizards!

These are two different, yet similar, animals that live in tropical areas of the world, even co-existing together in the Florida Everglades. They don't 'pal around', but they do manage to share the same swamps in this one place.

Let's have a look at a few fun facts of each, then see what form they take as interesting gifts. And I'm not talking Alligator Purses or Crocodile Pumps here. No alligators or crocodiles were harmed in the telling of this story!

See You Later, Alligator...

After 'While, Crocodile!

The song was written by Louisiana songwriter Robert Charles Guidry and made popular by this Bill Haley recording. It popularized a catchphrase already in use in the 1950s. Since I'm a '50s girl, I remember it well.

  • There are only two kinds of Alligators - The American Alligator, native to and found throughout the southeastern United States, with more than one million alligators each in the states of Florida and Louisiana.

The Chinese Alligator is found only along the Yangtze River and is so endangered (with only a few dozen believed to be left in the wild) that far more Chinese alligators are found in zoos.

  • Crocodiles live throughout the tropics in Africa, Asia, the Americas and Australia. Southern Florida is the only place where both alligators and crocodiles live side by side.

What's your Preference -- Alligator or Crocodile?

  • ohcaroline May 27, 2012 @ 1:55 pm | delete
I like the phrase...from the swamps of ebay...cool. We have an 8 foot alligator in the retention pond behind our church. I have seen him on the bank. I'm hoping we will get enough rain for him to wander back into the swamps. He is not so lovable.

Sorry - I live in crocodile territory and find absolutely nothing attractive in them.
  • Ramkitten Mar 9, 2012 @ 11:42 am | delete
You mentioned being attracted to alligators. Well, I think they were oddly attracted to ME when I lived in Florida. I had a number of ... interesting close encounters, including one BIG 'un that quietly came up behind me while I was standing on a golf course green, waiting to pull the pin for the guy I was with. He suddenly froze and got very wide-eyed. I turned slowly (my head) to see--gulp--that 15-foot "lizard" less than 15 feet behind me. Eek! I'd much rather have a cute little stuffed alligator toy, thanks.

You always find such fun and unique gifts! Just as importantly, I finally learned the difference between an alligator and a crocodile, thanks to you. I could try and pick between them but they both have great smiles. :)
