What is RSS?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and is used to publish and distribute information that is frequently updated, such as news headlines, blogs, audio, video, and Web 2.0 content.

This feed is structured in a standardized format so any feed reader can parse the data into a more graphically pleasing format.

The feed are read by special software that can parse the data in the feed. It can be web based or desktop based.

The 2 main components of an RSS Feed are as follows:

* Channel: A channel is the total collection of items you wish to highlight in your site. There is exactly one channel per RSS file.
* Item: Item is a single thing you wish to highlight from your site. There is at least one, but no more than 15 items per channel. But it is better to limit to 6 items per channel.

There are other components that you would use in your RSS feed and they include:

* title
* description
* link

RSS Feed Types

RSS feeds are in what is called an XML format which is a format of structuring data. The RSS feed structure comes in 3 different formats. RSS .94 (includes RSS .91 to .94), RSS 1.0 - otherwise known as RDF and RSS 2.0. Each format came along at a different time as different players came into the arena.

Most blogging software comes with code to create its own RSS feed, so the average user doesn't need to know how to code the XML output themselves.

Things you can do with RSS

- Podcasting: Pod casting is the process of capturing an audio event, song, speech, or mix of sounds and then posting that digital sound object to a Web site or "blog" in an RSS feed.

-Syndicate your blog: Most blogging software comes with this feature already and all you have to do is turn it on.
