Security Cameras

Security cameras are also known as closed circuit video recording devices. These video cameras are used to transmit a series of videos to a specific set of monitors. The purpose of security cameras is for surveillance of an area that may need monitoring for safety purposes. Common places are banks, casinos, airports, schools, stores, and government buildings. These "eyes in the sky," are generally security cameras covered by a plastic globe. People who cannot actually afford security cameras , or the staff to monitor the feed, often install fake cameras or dummy cameras, which are designed and used to fool intruders.

History

The first time we have documented use of security cameras was to document the launch of rockets in Germany in 1942. The system was installed by Siemens AG, Europe's largest engineering company, and was designed by Walter Bruch. Security cameras are still used in these settings to find the possible causes of malfunctions.
The US didn't install security cameras on the street until late 1968, when the police installed them in an effort to fight crime along a main business street in NY. Because of how successful the police found this tool to be, it became commonplace for banks and stores to utilize similar security cameras in an attempt to deter thieves and record evidence of crimes.
Since the 1990's, the use of security cameras in public areas for surveillance has become expected. Although, lately, they are utilized almost excessively, stirring up many privacy issues.

Uses

Besides the aforementioned uses, another common place to implement security cameras is in industrial plants, where the security cameras may be used to observe parts of a process. Should a problem arise, or should the area not be safe for humans, it can be reviewed later or from a safe area.
Many cities use security cameras to monitor motorway networks. This helps police and news networks inform people about congestion and noticeable accidents. Similarly, security cameras can be installed in mass transport systems so that operators can directly observe people who may need assistance, see that the passengers are clear of doorways, or that people are not recklessly riding. So far, security cameras have been installed on the backs of certain cars to help in the reversing process, and on certain amusement park rides to ensure safety. These will become more standardized on future models.
More advanced security cameras can be hooked up and routed through Digital Video Recorders, so footage can be saved and stored for many years. It can also be quickly pulled up and reviewed for your convenience. When things are transmitted through a computer system like this, performance options such as motion-detection and email alerts are available added features.
In the UK, they have started installing "talking" security cameras, where an operator can talk to the people they are monitoring.
For personal use, IP security cameras transmit the video through any internet connection so it can be monitored from any 3G phone. Because of the Easy Connect Technology these cameras come with, set up is as fast as 15 minutes. They can come with audio, night vision, and wireless capabilities.

Controversy

The most noted used of security cameras is in the UK, where there are more cameras per person than any other country. This has created rigorous debate about security versus privacy.
Opponents of security cameras point out that there is a loss of privacy when people are under constant surveillance and an impediment on their civil liberties. Most supporters have argued that they are not intruding on personal privacy as the security cameras strictly monitor public spaces. They also feel that right to privacy should be reasonably weighed against the public need for protection.
With the rise in security cameras in residential communities and individual homes, questions are being raised as to the extent which security cameras are being used as a social control rather than a deterrent to crime. Conversely, since 9/11 and the London train bombings, public opinion of security cameras has grown more favorable. The public feels that the London bombings are just one example of how effective security cameras can lead to apprehending criminals.
Still, legislation has been passed to regulate permitted use in hopes of preventing abuse. The laws are outlined as such:
Security cameras should only be used to further a clearly articulated purpose for law enforcement.
Security cameras should be installed with a conscious effort to minimize negative impact on privacy rights of the residents.
Before a community opts to install security cameras, the government will conduct a review of the plans, which should include exact geographic placement and public opinion.
The plan needs to also detail who retains and collects the data.

Countermeasures

Common ways to stop security cameras from functioning properly is to deliberately destroy them, spray the lens so it cannot see, use a laser pointer to blind the lens, or jam the wireless network so the security cameras cannot transmit the feed.
