Keep Reading, Pet People!

No, I'm not an ego-maniac. I swear!

This isn't all about me. I'm simply not that interesting. But my animals are.

But if you keep reading, I'll share much of what I've learned over the years with my dogs, cats, rats, guinea pigs, birds, hedgehog, and many other pets!

I

have been owned by animals my entire life. From the age of 17, I've been living on my own with my now-husband Geno and our animals.

All but one of my animals are rescues who have been abandoned, left for dead, or rescued from abusive and neglectful situations. And most are special needs pets. There's a self-mutilating Pit Bull named Cooper with severe separation anxiety. There's a sweet and saucy Miniature Pinscher named Kota who has chronic bloat and chronic trigeminal neuritis. Then there's Gus, a little blind Chihuahua who was found on the streets of New York city at the ripe age of six weeks. Charlie the Husky has canine Addison's Disease. J.J. the little black and white Tuxedo cat has a heart condition. And our latest feline family member is Tobin. She was left for dead on Boston's Tobin Bridge. She waited for rescue or for death - whichever came first - for at least four days that we know of. And the list goes on and on and on.

On this page, you'll learn a little about me, my writing, my Pet Pottery company and other random gigs. But you'll learn much more about my animals and the medical conditions that they live with. I'll tell you about the symptoms, diagnostic process and treatment for their varied ailments.

My goal? I hope that other dog owners, cat owners and pet lovers can learn from my experiences and my pets' misfortune.

About AllThingsAnimals

Animals and the arts are my passion.

My name is Mia Carter and for the past decade, I've worked as a journalist and artist in the Boston area. I've raised and trained dogs for a significant portion of my life, and I currently serve as a foster parent for a handful of New England animal shelters and rescue leagues. I worked for an animal shelter for over a decade and I currently specialize in the care and training of ill pets with handicaps or special needs, and I look forward to sharing all that I've learned with Squidoo visitors, while also providing the information necessary to make for happy, healthy pets.

Professionally, I've written extensively in the area of animal training and pet care. I've written for an array of high-profile national pet magazines, in addition to local pet magazines, like The Animal Print , serving Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

I give daily personalized pet advice on a vast array of topics as a Dog Expert and Pet Expert with JustAnswer.com.

I am also the current Pet Care Feature Writer on Suite101.com, where I write on topics like pet care, wildlife and dog health. In addition, I'm currently authoring and designing a series of animal care and training pamphlets, which will soon be available in veterinary clinics and animal shelters nationwide.

I'm also currently working as an editor and writer for WBZ Newsradio1030 AM, a CBS affiliate in Boston. I've just delved into the wonderful world of radio, but until just recently, I worked for more than ten years in the newspaper business as an editor-in-chief of a daily publication.

When I'm not busy managing broadcasts and writing script at WBZ, I may be off tending to one of my six dogs, six cats, three rats, two guinea pigs and five birds. If I'm not in the company of a non-human companion, then I'm probably busy overseeing some aspect of my fledgling pottery company, Piggy's Pet Pottery.
