Welcome 2 All Things Twitter
This list is meant to be comprehensive but since there's hundreds of twitter apps i'll be adding to this lens quite abit so keep checking back for new additions.
What is Twitter?
Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read other users' updates known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length which are displayed on the user's profile page and delivered to other users who have subscribed to them (known as followers). Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow anybody to access them. Users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, Short Message Service (SMS) or applications such as Tweetie, Twitterrific, Twitterfon, TweetDeck and feedalizr. The service is free to use over the Internet, but using SMS may incur phone service provider fees.Since its creation in 2006, Twitter has grown extensive notability and popularity worldwide. It is often described as the "SMS of Internet", in that the site provides the functionality (via its application programming interfaces) for other desktop and web-based applications to send and receive short text messages, often obscuring the Twitter service itself.
Kris Hoots from Oneicity.com asks "what is twitter anyway?"
What is Twitter? Why should I use it? How will it help my ministry? There are many Twitter experts like Laura Fitton (@Pistachio) for one. A few of my favorite non-profits using Twitter are Phoenix Rescue Mission (@phxmission), Miriam's Kitchen (@miriamskitchen) and Helen Ross, Executive Director of NTEN (@ntenhross). Plus there are are many articles that will tell you how best to use Twitter. I've included a couple of my most recent favorites at the bottom of this post.
In spite of all this information, the idea of Twitter is still too technical, too overwhelming for some.
Simply put, Twitter today is like the Community Reader Board of yesterday. And I might add that in our community, it's not so "yesterday" at all.
Our local grocery store has been a central and thriving part of our community for more than 50 years. And so has their reader board. In the initial years, the reader board mostly had notices of specials. Like "Bananas 19¢ lb." or "Bread 2 for $1%u2033 Now this reader board is rarely advertising a sale. It is almost always touting someone in the community or announcing an upcoming event. We took this photo yesterday.
Community Reader Board
So%u2026while not everyone knows or understands Twitter, most everyone knows about reader boards. You've seen them in front of schools, stores, theaters, etc. for years. And essentially, this is what Twitter is. And like a reader board, you have a limited amount of space (characters) to communicate your message. And like a reader board, it's very public.
Sure it can advertise your latest "sale." But it can also help you tell about things happening in your "community" - you can give kudos to a volunteer, to a cherished guest, to a special child. You can tell about upcoming events and ways your ministry is working. You can connect with others in your space. You can hang out and have a conversation - you can tell people what you saw on someone else's reader board. "Hey are you going to the charity benefit concert? I saw they're having one this Saturday over at the Grange Hall%u2026"
What do you think? Does this make sense to you? Does this reader board perspective change your view of Twitter?

The Reasons for Twitter's Success
The Main Aspects of the Enormous Growth of Microblogging and Tweets
- Twitter ?s a new microblogging and social networking service which was founded in March 2006 by a small group of software engineers in San Francisco, CA. After an initial testing period in which the system's concept showed itself immensely popular among the closed community, its founders decided to open the service up, and in May 2007, Twitter Incorporated was founded.
Twitter's Enormous Growth
Since then, Twitter's success has been enormous. In February 2009, the social network has had a total of over 10 million unique visitors, an increase of 700% to last year!
The increase in American unique visitors even reached 1000% to 4 million in that same month. Today, after the short 3 years of its life, Twitter is the third most popular site among social networks, right after Facebook and MySpace .
Aspects of Twitter's Success Strategy
Twitter's success is very uncommon, even for social network start-ups, one example for this is the tremendous growth which can't even be equalled by Facebook, a site which many predicted to be the social network of the future. Reasons for this explosion in popularity are:
* Simplicity of the user interface
* Social networking
* Speed in both reading and posting
* Diversity in usage possibilities: personal or professional
* Ease of use through many applications
Simplicity, Social Networking and Speed
The simplicity of its interface and the tweeting process -the action of sending an update or message to the site- is one of the most important points if a service wants to win regular users. All a new user has to do is go to the Twitter homepage, register and start entering his first update. All following updates will then show up on this page as an infinite flow of his personal thoughts, almost like a diary.
Social networks have recently proven themselves enormously popular, and Twitter is no exception to this rule: One of its key aspects ?s the possibility to use it to keep in touch with friends, see what they're up to and let them know what you are thinking, or letting them comment on your messages.
The difference to sites like Facebook however is that with Twitter, users can see the messages of millions of people who aren't acquainted with each other, and if they find their tweets (=messages) interesting, they can follow them in order to read their future updates. This way, users can use Twitter not only to connect to friends, but also to make new ones based on their interests.
The speed is another point which clearly differentiates Twitter from other sites like MySpace: While MySpace shows its users an entire, colorful and personalized profile of each person where they have to scroll through many messages to find something relevant, Twitter omits the complexity. There's just one feature: written 140 character messages. This enables users to get a fast update on their friend's lives because they don't have to read entire paragraphs or blog posts. In addition to this, every user's own update is just a text message without the need of adding fancy photographs or other unimportant and time-consuming gimmicks.
Professional Use and App Diversity
As text messages can contain (mostly shortened) links to whatever website a user wants, he can use Twitter to promote himelf, his writing, his product or his company. Many professional users register with Twitter to get more visits to their company's page or to update people about current activities and developments. Likewise do newspapers use the service for breaking news, and celebrities in order to give their fans a possibility to follow them ever more closely, often without consulting their publicists, which adds even more value to their posts.
Finally, Twitter may be one of many different microblogging services, but it certainly ?s the one with the most public exposure and thus the most users and the most third-party-applications. Whatever operating system a user may be using, there's a Twitter app for it. Even on the go users are offered many applications like PocketTweets for the Apple iPhone or just plain old SMS-message updating which can be used with any mobile phone.
The Future of the Web and Personal Electronics
It can be said without any exaggeration that Twitter ?s currently a major player in the Internet game, and as just exposed, many of its popularity is caused by its speed and ease of use. This general concept of fewer but highly developed and fully exploited features seems to be a major success strategy for current and future web and mobile device development, just as can be seen with Apple's formula for success .

What are Hashtags and How do i use them?
- A hashtag is a great way to bring people together around a topic on Twitter just add a hash symbol (#) to the front of a word and encourage others to add it to their tweets about the same topic. Everyone can easily find these tweets by searching for the hashtag on Twitter Search.
Twitter memes like #SXSW helped Twitterers follow conference activities and events both on the ground and from afar, but for the most part, people all but stopped using the hashtag once SXSW was over.
So, how can we create a lasting meme? Simple. Make it happen weekly. Much of this started with the genius of @micah's #followfriday. But hey, why stop with #followfriday? Here are 24 daily Twitter memes to help you meet new Twitterers and discuss common interests. - Monday

ReTweeting Explained
Retweeting is an integral part of the Twitter experience. The retweet (or "RT") allows Twitter users to share the best links, tweets, and gems they find from others using the service. But for beginners, it's not immediately obvious what retweets are, or what tools to use to make retweeting easier. This HOW TO article not only covers the basics of retweeting, but also highlights some of the best web and mobile-based tools for retweeting and tracking RTs in real-time. If you're a Twitter beginner, we hope you find it useful; if you're a more advanced user, we hope you'll share it with friends who are just starting out.
1. What is Retweeting and How to Retweet
Retweeting is how Twitter users share interesting tweets from the people they are following. They copy and paste the original tweet and send it out. To give credit to the original person, users usually put "RT" plus the originator's username at the beginning of the tweet. Here's an example:
- The Twitter user @benparr tweets: I just heard that Apple is releasing new iPods in July!
- You retweet by posting RT @benparr I just heard that Apple is releasing new iPods in July!
2. How to Track Retweets
Once you've gotten used to retweeting and seen some excellent retweets in your Twitter stream, you may want to track retweets on a larger scale. The most popular retweets tend to reflect the favorite articles and most important stories of the entire Twitter community. This can be great if you want to find important articles, read useful blog posts, or are looking to track emerging trends.
More on Retweeting
Twitter has become a powerful platform for link-sharing, and retweeting is evolving as one of the best methods for tracking what's popular or noteworthy.
- The Science of ReTweets
- Dan Zarrella explains which factors make certain tweets more viral than others.
- DailyRT
- DailyRT seeks to rank tweets by the number of retweets they've received: it's basically DiggDigg reviews for retweets. It supports Sign In with Twitter, so you can retweet right there on the site, and also tracks retweets of Twitter trends. The key feature, however, is one many trend sites lack: the ability to search and find top retweeted topics from the past. When you log in, you can also save these searches.
If you're looking to see what's hot on Twitter, these new sites are a huge help: DailyRT is a very competent effort and definitely one to watch. - Repeets
- Newcomer Repeets tracks hot retweets from today, this week and this month. It also captures all the retweets in a thread and produces trend graphs showing what time a retweet peaked.
It adds a neat new feature, too: you can search by username and see how many times a user's Tweets have been RT'd, along with a roundup of their most retweeted content. - Please Retweet Me
- Retweeting is a cornerstone of Twitter use. Twitter users love to retweet great articles and clever comments. But sometimes there are articles or specific causes that tweeters just want to be shared, so Twitter users ask for a retweet. Enter Please Retweet Me, a simple tool that adds a special link to the end of any tweet that, when clicked, will automatically fill in all of the information needed to retweet.
- re-Twit'd
- re-Twit'd is a simple application that lets you see what's hot on Twitter based on how frequently something is retweeted.

The Top 21 Twitter Applications
According to Compete
Twitpic, an app that lets users share photos on Twitter, took the top spot with 1,236,828 unique visitors in January. Tweetdeck, which came in second with 285,864 monthly visits, is a Twitter app that streamlines notifications and tweets. Third place went to Digsby (with 233,472 monthly visitors), an application that centralizes e-mail, IM and social networking accounts into one desktop program. With 149,812 visits, the fourth most popular app, Twitterfeed, offers to automatically tweet posts published on a user's blog using RSS. A Twitter user ranking site, Twitterholic, is the fifth most popular application, with 147,164 people visiting monthly.
Interestingly, two of the top twenty apps - Digsby and Hellotxt, an application that allows users to update their status across social networks - are not exclusively focused on Twitter. We recently wrote a detailed post on why we cover Twitter-related news so often, and we think the fact that there are so many applications developed as an offshoot of the microblogging system is another testament to the fact that Twitter is not just another startup. This is our attempt to figure out which ones are gaining the most traction.
While we think this is a pretty comprehensive list based on the chosen proxy for popularity, it's but a first pass at a list we hope will become more authoritative over time. Keep in mind that this methodology is only one measurement of engagement; many people use Twitter iPhone apps and other clients without ever visiting these services' websites. Derivative site traffic is only a proxy for usage but the most easily measurable one.
We also ran these sites though Quantcast and Google Trends, but chose to measure by Compete because it had the most comprehensive set of data, especially for the smaller sites. So the absolute numbers are unquestionably higher for some of these Twitter apps. If you know additional Twitter apps that should be listed here, or if you have better ideas on how to compile this list, please leave a message in the comments.
It should also be noted that there is a plethora of Twitter application databases out there. Here are a few that we looked at particularly closely: Twitter Fan Wiki, Twitdom, Twapps, Twitstat, and TwitTown

iPhone Twitter App Review
- Twitterrific
The Iconfactory's Twitterrific is my favorite Mac client for the Twitter social-messaging service, and the new iPhone edition of Twitterrific is my favorite of the first generation of iPhone apps.
Twitterrific displays tweets from your contacts and lets you send tweets. The program includes integration with twitpic.com, so you can take a photo (or pick one from your photo library) and the program will automatically upload it and embed its URL in your tweet. An embedded Web browser lets you tap on user names or hyperlinks and view the contents without having to switch out of the program and into Safari.
The program's interface is excellent, combining simplicity with solid functionality. A series of slide-out "hint" screens appear for new users, cleverly helping to teach you how the program works. But I found the program's large single-tweet view to be mostly a waste of time.
Although Twitterrific provides me with 95 percent of what I use Twitter for, there's still plenty of room for the iPhone version to grow, especially given the tough competition of several excellent iPhone-optimized Twitter web interfaces, most notably Hahlo. Twitterrific can't display all the messages from a given friend; also, it doesn't let you filter tweets to only see your direct messages, messages replying to your tweets, or a list of your own recent tweets. The program's scrolling also feels sluggish. (A forthcoming update will improve the program's scrolling speed.)
Twinkle
Tapulous' Twinkle is a strong competitor to Twiterrific, but its colorful interface (bright yellow, blue, and gray word balloons on a dark starscape background) is distracting and harder to read than Twitterrific's.
Twinkle's best trait is its location awareness. When you post to Twinkle, other Twinkle users can see what city you're tweeting from. And a tap on the Nearby button lets you see tweets from Twinkle users near you, which is pretty cool. However, I wish I could opt to view tweets only from nearby users I follow, and there's no way to block nearby users whose tweets you might find distasteful. (Tapulous says such a method will be available in a forthcoming update.) Because Twinkle's location-savvy functionality works via a proxy server run by Tapulous, only Twinkle users can appear in the Nearby list, and only other Twinkle users can see what city you're tweeting from.
I'm not thrilled about Twinkle's reliance on a Tapulous server as a mediator between your iPhone and Twitter. Yes, that approach lets Twinkle include some clever non-Twitter features such as location-based services, but only for other Twinkle users. When Twitter is down, you'll still be able to send Tweets-but they won't go to Twitter until it comes back up. Likewise, if Twitter is up and the Twinkle server goes down, you could be cut off from the rest of the Twitterverse. And I found it a little disconcerting that Tapulous's TwinkleKing account, who I don't follow on Twitter, was able to send me spam about Twinkle-related contests and the like. You can't block those TwinkleKing messages.
Twittelator
Big Stone Phone's Twittelator is in many ways the polar opposite of Twitterrific. Twitterrific's interface is terrific for reading your friends' timeline and posting tweets, but it doesn't let you dive deep into the features of Twitter. Twittelator, in contrast, has a much less refined interface, but supports every Twitter feature imaginable.
From Twittelator, you can view your friends timeline, your own timeline, your replies, your direct messages, the timelines of other users, the friends of the people you follow, you name it. You can search for text on all of Twitter. If you tap on a friend's icon, you immediately see all their Twitter stats.
If Twitterrific could improve by adding a bit more functionality, Twittelator could benefit from a dramatic tightening of its interface. I found the layout of its main tweet list a bit strange, with numerous small items that were difficult to tap on, and tweet text isn't as readable as I'd like. Yet it's actually the least dense of the three programs, forcing you to scroll more.
Twittelator's most bizarre feature is its "Emergency icon," which according to Stone Design lets you "create a Tweet with a map of your current location." The latest update to the software allows you to hide the button, which is a good thing. Twitter's great and all, but if you're in trouble, sending an automated tweet about it via a button that's easily pushed by mistake doesn't seem like it should be high up on your list of options.
Twitterrific is currently the classiest of the Twitter client apps on the iPhone, but it's got stiff competition close behind. What Twitterrific lacks in features, it more than makes up for by getting the interface and most important parts of Twitter-reading and posting tweets-right.
Twinkle is a lot of fun and quite innovative, showing how location information adds to the richness of Twitter. If only Twitter supported location information in a useful, native way-I'm not thrilled about Twinkle's use of an intermediary server, nor the inability to block unpleasant people who might be near you. Its interface could also use a bit of toning down, at least as an option.
I'm mightily impressed by all of Twittelator's features. If you're someone who frequently surfs around your friends' timelines and the public Twitter timeline, it's a better choice than Twitterrific. If most of your Twitter time is spent reading your friends timeline and posting tweets, it's not.
The good news is, all three of these programs are free, so you can download them for yourself if you're not sure about which one is right for you. (Unlike Twinkle and Twittelator, Twitterrific's free version is supported by occasional ads in the tweet list. You must buy the $10 Twitterrific Premium to block those ads.)
And if you haven't updated your iPhone to version 2.0 (or don't want to download a lot of iPhone apps and risk stability problems), don't fear. Hahlo remains an excellent, full-featured Twitter client that works right within Safari.
Tweetie
Tweetie is a really useful Twitter app for the iPhone and iPod Touch. This app has all the features that we've come to expect out of a Twitter client and does it with such a clean interface. There's not much lacking in this app, making it worth every penny.
When you start up the app you'll need to sign in with one of your Twitter accounts. This app allows for you to register with multiple, so keep that in mind when you're picking out which Twitter app you're going to use. After you log in, there's four main buttons and a more button for you to delve through. Those buttons are Tweets, Replies, Messages, and Favorites. In More you'll find My Profile, Following, Followers, Trends, and Search.
Each tab will give you 20 results at a time, but you' can have the app load up more simply by pressing the button. It doesn't seem like it maxes out either, so keep that in mind if you like to view a lot of Tweets even when mobile. You can do quite a bit with this app, such as view reply chains, see links directly in the browser, retweet messages, turn links in the browser into short URLS and much more. Basically, the only thing that this app doesn't do is let you browse the web and shorten a URL on the fly.
While some people don't enjoy the iChat look that this app offers, it definitely adds a native iPhone feel to the app. This is really a solid app overall and offers the most out of any Twitter client we've had a chance to review. Tweetie is the perfect combination of power user and casual user Twitter app. Definitely download this today.
GPSTwit
A tweet-only application (meaning you can't read other people's tweets, just post quickly) that distinguishes itself from the other minimalist one-way apps by adding GPS (with a link to your position on Google maps) and pictures to the equation.
Pros: It has as much versatility as you'd want to pack into a single-function Twitter app.
Cons: Not as beautifully simple as a single function app should be, and slow, which is fatal for an app that's supposed to blindingly fast. Annoying ads.
iTweets
iTweets is basic Twitter app that aims for simplicity, merging all of your incoming tweets into a single, color-coded timeline.
Pros: It has really pretty colors and a bemusing sense of single-mindedness.
Cons: It blends all of your incoming tweets-from people you follow, @replies and direct messages-into a single sticky stream of goop that's unmanageable because of the way it's laid out-no icons means it's hard to tell who the tweet is coming from. And it's a buck! Boo.
LaTwit
LaTwit is a pretty standard Twitter app that gives you all of the core functions, with a few useful customizations for easier reading.
Pros: It lets you have tons of accounts and aggregate them into a single feed and gives you control over little things, like font sizes, and URL copy and pasting, that might make it endearing to you.
Cons: Kinda ugly. It's buggy-goes catatonic often in the settings menu. It puts the public timeline front and center (when I check Twitter from my mobile on a tiny screen, I wanna see what my friends are up to, not the whole world). Missing deep features, like search. Not worth three bucks.
Nambu
Nambu is a hydra, pulling in your Twitter, FriendFeed and Ping.fm accounts so you can social network and read what your friends are up to until your eyes and fingers bleed.
Pros: The real selling point is that it combines three major microblogging-or-whatever-you-want-to-call-them services in one app. The reading UI is decent, clearly ripped from Twitterific, down to the color scheme. And uh, well, multiple social networking accounts in a single app!
Cons: It feels like beta software: One of the five main buttons is for feedback. Limited screen real estate shouldn't be gobbled up by something like that. Despite ripping the UI from Twitterific, it's a little messier, with tiny, unintelligible buttons up top and not quite the same fit and finish.
it's not immediately apparent what some of the buttons do. Robert Scoble might love this for $2, but if you're just looking for that one great Twitter client, this ain't it.
NatsuLion
Another generic Twitter app, it does all of the basic things you want in a Twitter application, but there's nothing really special about it.
Pros: It has a separate section for unread tweets, which makes managing them easy. The lion is adorable!
Cons: Too much text crammed into each box (which need to be more cleanly differentiated themselves), which makes it hard to read. Blends direct messages and @replies into a single timeline, which might annoy some people. Skips out on features like search, and even picture uploading, which is typically taken for granted.
Tweeter:
It's a no-reading, just-tweeting one-trick pony.
Pros: It's really fast for firing off tweets instantly.
Cons: It's tweet-only.
Tweetion
Tweetion wants to be a Twitter search app more than anything else, since that's the first thing that pops up when you open it. It, uh, tries to do a lot of stuff too. Tries being the operative word.
Pros: It archives all of your tweets from ever ever ago. It's like a trainwreck in your pocket that you can look at whenever you want for just $5.
Cons: Takes forever to load. Ugly interface that's like a flashback to Geocities circa 1999. Animations are slow and choppy. Awkward button placement-one of them is dedicated solely to your profile picture, no joke-while most of the actual Twitter functions are buried in a more menu. Settings menu is a scrolling, choppy, confusing mess that awkwardly mixes buttons, text entries and the slot machine list UI. Couldn't figure out the Facebook deal. It's buggy and froze a lot too. Clearly, no one used this before they put it out. A genuine atrocity.
Tweetsville
Tweetsville's designers it seems weren't quite sure what they wanted it to do, so it does a little bit of everything, but it's not particularly great to use.
Pros: It has every major Twitter function, solid search capabilities and in tweets, makes it abundantly clear who it's going to. That's about it.Update: You can customize the main buttons along the bottom, which makes it a lot more usable than the default layout, since you can tailor it to what's important to you.
Cons: It's hard to immediately find core functions when you first open it up-a no-no on an app designed to be used on the go. By default, half the buttons on the bottom are dedicated to search and trend-tracking, while your @replies, which I think should be front and center, are buried under a "more" menu, until you change them around. (Which it isn't immediately apparent you can do.) The UI is also inconsistent from function to function, and there's just not a major reason to pay $4 for this when free or cheaper apps that are better.
Twittelator Pro
The big daddy of Twitter apps, it has more features than any other app we tried and it'll let you do just about anything-search, check nearby tweets and trends, create custom sub-groups of people you follow, multiple accounts and more
Pros: The most powerful Twitter client with lots of customization like multiple skins, and little touches like a friends list that makes it easy to @reply or direct message someone on the fly.
Cons: The listicle-style menu for all the features is a tad bland, though it gets the job done. When it's trying to do something, it can be annoyingly unresponsive. The UI isn't the cleanest, either (admittedly, because it's trying to do so much) and some of the buttons are hard to hit. Pricey.
Twitfire
Twitfire is another one-way application that just lets you send tweets, not read them.
Pros: Hrmmmm... It makes it easy to send messages to your friends-which the other one-way apps don't do.
Cons: Another post-only app that wants to be essential, but is just confusing. Do I push the button before I type? After? What's that button?
Twitterfon
The most straightforward full-featured Twitter app, it has every major function you'd want-search, profile diving, picture uploads-presented in the simplest way in possible.
Pros: It's incredibly lean and loads a zillion tweets way faster than any other Twitter app in a simple, easy to read layout. It caches them too, meaning you can flick it on to do a tweet dump before you hop in the subway. The best free all-round Twitter app.
Cons: Missing some power-user functions, like multiple accounts and themes (the baby blue does get on my nerves), and an option for a larger font size would be nice.
Twittervision
Rather than check out what the people you're following are up to, it bounces you around the world, following random, geo-located tweets in real time, or you can see who's tweeting near you in creepy detail. All to give you a "sense of the global zeitgeist."
Pros: It's neat.
Cons: The amount of detail in local tweets, with a Google Map pin and all, is kinda creepy! You can't read what the people you're following are doing (granted, that's not the point).
