What Exactly is Aloe Vera?

A bit about the history of aloe vera, and its uses

Aloe has been known about for thousands of years - from the ancient Egyptians in 3,500BC to the Chinese and Indian cultures, as well as the Greek and Roman civilisations... Allegedly, both Queens Cleopatra and Nerfertiti prized aloe for its beauty properties.

It looks like a cactus, but in fact its a member of the lily & onion family. And it's the clear gel inside the leaf that's been used for centuries for soothing the skin - for helping heal wounds, burns and cuts; as an aid in digestion; to help boost the immune system and provide the body with a rich cocktail of nutrients...

So it has a long and illustrious history. Mankind has benefited from the aloe vera plant for centuries. And modern science is now discovering more and more about its efficacy in specific areas.

What Does Aloe Vera Contain?

and what gives the health benefits of aloe vera...

The clear gel inside the Aloe Vera leaf is full of nutrients. As you can see from the list below, the aloe vera plant contains quite an impressive list of nutritional ingredients...

It contains at least 75 known ingredients, which provide huge benefits to the body...

It's no surprise there are so many uses for aloe vera - and aloe vera gel has so many benefits.

It's not really the aloe that's amazing - but rather the human body... When it has the right ingredients to heal itself, then it will.
  • Vitamins - C, E & Beta-Carotene. It's also one of the few plants to contain Vitamin B12
  • Minerals - including magnesium, zinc, copper, manganese, chromium, iron, calcium...
  • Amino Acids - we need 20 different amino acids to build the protein in our bodies... Aloe vera gel provides 18 of them. And it provides 7 of the 8 Essential amino acids that the body cannot manufacture itself.
  • Sugars - particularly long chain polysaccharides which help boost the immune system
  • Enzymes - which aid digestion and assist in the inflammatory process
  • Plant Sterols - powerful anti-inflammatory agents
  • Saponins - powerful amti-microbial agents
  • Anthraquinones - strong painkillers, which also have some anti-bacterial and viricidal activity
  • Salycylic Acid - an aspirin-like compound which is anti-inflammatory

Drinking Aloe Vera - is it good for you?

Aloe Vera Drinks
We get asked tons of questions about Aloe. Lots of people know you can use it for your skin... but not so many people know you can drink it.

Here are some of our most common questions:

"What are the benefits of drinking aloe vera juice?"
"Is Aloe safe to take long term?"
"Drinking aloe vera - is it good for you?"
"How much aloe to take in first week?"
"How much aloe vera juice can I drink per day and be safe?"
"How much aloe vera do you drink?"
"Is aloe vera juice safe to drink daily?"
"Is drinking aloe good for you?"
"Is mixing aloe vera juice into other drinks OK?"
"What are the reasons to drink aloe vera juice?"
"What are the side effects of drinking aloe vera?"
"Can you drink to much aloe?"
"Does drinking aloe vera juice help for weight loss?"

Rather than posting the answers to all these questions here, I've simply put a link to our Aloe FAQ Page:
Aloe Vera FAQ's

...but the short answer is: "Yes, it's completely safe to drink!"

I always find it funny that we ask so many questions about something that is potentially very good for us; yet so few questions about all the things that we eat and drink every day that are not so good for us... coffee, fizzy drinks, tap water, beer... (not so sure about the last one!)

Anyway... the Aloe Vera leaf is full of vital nutrients for the body... and it's these that provide the benefits that people report from drinking Aloe Vera.

I must say, bengylsen, you certainly have presented the most comprehensive collection of information of aloe I have ever seen! Taught me a lot! And why stop at aloe? What other ingredients can you report about? And as a Dad too, I'm most concerned with safe products for my kids and myself. If you get a chance, check out my Pure Skin Care blog.

Hi,
what a great information about Aloe Vera, because it is very good plant and rarely used for many skin care products also.
I hope my lens also focuses on where to buy Strivectin
