Aloe Vera Benefits

Ever wonder why some people swear by this plant and have a windowsill full of aloe vera plants? After you read about some of the aloe vera benefits, you may find yourself running out to get one for your family.

Easy to grow, good for the environment, and inexpensive to maintain are additional advantages of this plant. Aloe vera is at the top of my "need to have" houseplant list.

Easily Grow Your Own Aloe Vera Plants

Aloe Vera plants are very easy to grow yourself. It really is one of the easiest houseplants to care for. All you need is a nice sunny, windowsill so the plants have lots of warmth and sunlight.

Aloe plants do need to be watered frequently in the summer. Don't overwater, but make sure you do water often enough so that the plant does not shrivel or appear limp. During the winter months, the plant becomes somewhat dormant, and does not require a lot of water during the cold months.

When you plant your aloe, remember that drainage is important. You can use a planter with a 1-2 inch layer of gravel in the bottom of the pot or use a container with drainage holes. Your potting soil should have extra perlite or coarse sand added. You can always use a cacti potting soil, too.

As your plant grows, you can remove the shoots around the edge to start a new plant. You can add your new plant to your windowsill, or pass it on to a friend.

Yes! I always have at least one aloe vera plant.

Graceonline says:

I don't really have one right now, but I had to pick this column of the two choices. For many years I had an heirloom aloe plant. Alas, it did not survive one of our many moves, and I was unable to keep the starts I salvaged from it alive. You have reminded me how useful the humble aloe, and that poster is gorgeous. One thing I learned from you: Aloe is good for lightening age spots. I'll have to try that soon, before my hands and face are twice as blotched!

says:

Nice lens, I have one too! Looks great in terracotta and I use it in the summer as a moisturizer.

aesta1 says:

I have several, one in my kitchen, one in the bathroom and the rest outside. Whenever I remember, I use it for my scalp and skin.

Amarant says:

They are definitely great for treating those accidental kitchen burns. Also, my wife's grandmother sometimes makes a juice from it and drinks it, she says it's great for treating gastritis

SueM11 says:

I have a few plants ready for minor burns. Wish mine was as big as the one in the poster.

Sk. Aijaz says:

JoanneOtt says:

I don't have a plant, but love to use aloe vera so I buy products that have it.

BigGirlBlue says:

Honestly I can't grow one to save my life. They always meet an untimely death. Now African Violets, I grow them no problem. I'd love to have an Aloe in the house but I have to get by with a bottle of Jason's 99% aloe in a bottle.

lizziebeth says:

I used to. I really want to get another one. One of these days! I know Aloe is so good for many things. I learned some more uses for it here today. Thank you!

How Do You Prepare the Aloe Vera Gel?

It is very easy to harvest the gel inside each aloe vera leaf.

Cut off one of the outer leaves. Cut close to the base of the plant and cut at an angle.

Place the leaf in a glass or some container so that it can be propped upright for about 10 minutes. This allows the sap to drain out.

Lay the leaf flat on a cutting board. Using a sharp knife, cut off the tip of the leaf. Then cut off the serrated edges that run up both sides of the leaf.

Carefully slice the leaf lengthwise so you can seperate the front from the back.

Using a spoon or a butter knife, scoop out the mucilage and the gel, but not the sap.

Store in a refrigerated container and you have aloe vera gel ready to go.
